Studio Ghibli Animator Makiko Futaki: A Tribute

24 June 2016 3:10 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After Studio Ghibli veteran Makiko Futaki died in May, Pixar’s animator-director Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur”) agreed to write a tribute and discovered a personal style in re-examining her work.

Makiko Futaki lived a life of animation. She worked on films from Katsuhiro Otomo’s “Akira” to Hayao Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

To be honest, I did not know her work until I had heard of her unfortunate passing in May at the young age of 57. Her list of film credits were jaw dropping. She had injected her talent into many of the greatest films of all time.

Animation can be an invisible art form because it is so collaborative. It is sometimes hard to discern which animator animated what scene in a particular film, but after watching several films an animator drew moments for, one can begin to see a personal style.

The Good Dinosaur Blu-ray review

18 March 2016 5:55 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Peter Sohn

Written by: Peter Sohn, Erik Benson, Meg LeFauve, Kelsey Mann, Bob Peterson, Meg LeFauve

Starring the voice talents of: Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand, Maleah Nipay-Padilla, Ryan Teeple

There’s no hiding I’m a huge fan of Disney-Pixar and have been since I first saw the famed Luxo Jr. short 20 years ago. Watching their body of work grow has been exciting in many ways that include both exploration and originality. The Good Dinosaur continues the trend to invent and is certainly one of Pixar’s finest visual explorations and a true journey, for both the characters and viewer.

Although The Good Dinosaur leans towards favouring, and targeting, a slightly younger audience than usual there’s nothing wrong with that. For the casual Toy Story type-of-viewer, you may find the first 25-30 minutes a little harder to embed into but stay and switch off into the new creation, »

A few weeks ago, Wamg was invited to the in-home global junket for Disney & Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, which is available now on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital download. While there, they had a band ready to play us a few songs from the film, and I sat down with director Peter Sohn to talk about the film. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Becoming Mike Nichols (Douglas McGrath)

Tracing the early career of the prolific filmmaker, from his early collaborations with Elaine May to his first few adventures in Hollywood, Becoming Mike Nichols may very well become a required text in an introduction to narrative filmmaking course. Generous with his knowledge of the craft, text, performers, and the mistakes he made along the way, he opens up to fellow »

Blu-ray Review – The Good Dinosaur (2015)

23 February 2016 3:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Good Dinosaur, 2015.

Directed by Peter Sohn.

Featuring the voice talents of Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand, Marcus Scribner, Raymond Ochoa, Jack Bright, Steve Zahn, Mandy Freund, Steven Clay Hunter, Anna Paquin and Sam Elliott.

Synopsis:

In a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend.

While The Good Dinosaur didn’t light the box office on fire when it was released last year, it’s a solid Pixar movie that shows the company still knows how to create a good story. And while Pixar’s home video releases aren’t as comprehensive as past editions, like its excellent Ultimate Toy Box collection for Toy Story and Toy Story 2, this Blu-ray + DVD + digital HD release is still pretty good.

The movie puts a unique twist on evolution by having the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs miss the planet. Eventually, they develop rudimentary forms of technology, »

Synopsis:

For years, Disney has been mining the road movie for kids. From Pinocchio to Finding Nemo, Disney characters have gone through the wringer looking for their way back home, and the Disney/Pixar animated film The Good Dinosaur has a gangly Apatosaurus named Arlo severely dislocated from his patch of the world and family, but he embarks on the adventure of his young life as he makes his way back to the beginning, and redeeming himself in the process.

The Good Dinosaur hinges on a gimmick: What if the cataclysm (an asteroid) that wiped the dinosaurs out never happened? »
