Blu-ray Review: ‘The Secret World of Arrietty,’ ‘Castle in the Sky,’ ‘Whisper of the Heart’

21 May 2012 9:29 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Disney has cleverly timed this week’s release of Studio Ghibli’s “The Secret World of Arrietty” with the Blu-ray debut two other Ghibli films from one of the most influential studios in the history of film — “Whisper of the Heart” and “Castle in the Sky.” All three films are worth a look (as is Everything ever made by Studio Ghibli) but “Castle” is my personal favorite of the three. Just check ‘em all out (and stay tuned for more exciting news about an upcoming Chicago Film Critics Association event featuring HollywoodChicago.com about Studio Ghibli).

While the Ghibli films never make much of a dent at the U.S. box office, they are absolute juggernauts overseas. “The Secret World of Arrietty” has made $145 million worldwide. Like most Ghibli films, it’s beloved everywhere but the U.S.(where it couldn’t break $20 million). However, the people in the »

Harry's Law: Cancelled; No Season Three

12 May 2012 7:03 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Case closed. Court is dismissed. Harry's Law has been cancelled by NBC after two seasons and 34 episodes.

Harry's Law revolves around Harriet Korn, a no-nonsense attorney who will take on just about any case as long as she believes in a person's innocence. Over the course of two seasons, the cast has also included Nate Corddry, Karen Olivo, Justine Lupe, Mark Valley, Christopher McDonald, Brittany Snow, and Aml Ameen.

The show debuted in January 2011 to a 2.2 in the 18-49 demographic with 11.07 million viewers. It was a mediocre demo rating but total viewership was impressive and when you're NBC, that's better than nothing. The ratings dwindled downward pretty quickly and the show ended the season with a 1.4 demo rating and 7.75 million.

The series was on the bubble for cancellation but NBC brought it back for a »

Kellan Lutz: Tarzan 3D Movie

4 May 2012 5:54 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Kellan Lutz (photo), best known for playing Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies, and Resident Evil actress Spencer Locke, will star in the performance-capture 3D movie Tarzan, adapted from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale, and to be directed by Animals United’s producers / directors Reinhard Klooss and Holger Tappe. Needless to say, Lutz will bring Tarzan back to life, while Locke will play Jane. The screenplay was written by Klooss, Ice Age: Dawn of the DinosaursYoni Brenner and Jessica Postigo, whose sole listed credit on the IMDb is Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments, currently in pre-production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it updates Burroughs’ story by having Tarzan’s parents killed in a plane crash, the CEO of Greystoke Energies as the film’s chief villain, and Jane as an environmentally conscious heroine. Come to think of it, the first "update" isn’t something really new: Boy’s »

'Battleship' Stars Get A Blast From The Past

1 May 2012 12:40 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Rihanna's been singled out a lot lately for "Battleship" because it's her acting debut, but that's not really fair, is it? MTV News' Josh Horowitz certainly didn't think so. During "MTV First: Battleship," he decided to take her co-stars on a trip down memory lane to look at their first gigs on the big screen.

First up is Alexander Skarsgård in his debut American film, "Zoolander." If you're thinking "wait, he was in that?" you're not alone. You may recall the scene, but not the actor because he didn't last very long. Remember the gasoline explosion? Yeah. He took part in that.

When the cast is shown a picture of Skarsgård in a bright green shirt and fleece vest (with his orange mocha frappuccino!), it gets immediate laughs. Rihanna exclaims "Oh my God!" as Taylor Kitsch says simultaneously, "That's fantastic!"

"Who is that?" the "True Blood" actor jokingly laughs. »

96 Minutes – The Review

26 April 2012 12:41 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

This review originally ran last November when 96 Minutes played at The St. Louis International Film Festival

Racism is never an easy topic to tackle in any medium, so when you add class warfare and the peer pressure of gang culture to the story, it triples the difficulty of pulling off a believable and sincere film. Against the odds, this is precisely what first time writer and director Aimee Lagos has accomplished with 96 Minutes. Inspired by true events, 96 Minutes is a story of four young lives, each of them on separate paths which violently collide.

Brittany Snow (The Vicious Kind) plays Carley, an upper-middle class hard-working white college student studying law. Evan Ross (The Family Tree) plays Dre, a young black man from a gritty part of town whose determined not to fall into the gangster life, despite retaining his friendship with Kevin, played by Jonathan Michael Trautmann, a 16-year old »

Q&A: Spending Time With '96 Minutes' Star Brittany Snow

26 April 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Brittany Snow, the blonde, blue-eyed beauty you probably remember best from crowd-pleasers like "John Tucker Must Die" and "Prom Night," is all grown up -- and if you don't believe us now, you will. With her latest flick, the dramatic thriller "96 Minutes," the 27-year-old actress proves that even though she's a bona fide triple-threat ("Hairspray," anyone?), she doesn't have to sing or dance to steal the show.

"96 Minutes" tells the story of four lives slammed together in one shocking moment, and explores how each individual deals with the situation at hand. Spoiler alert: Some deal better than others. We caught up with Snow to talk about carjacking, a capella singing and why she'll (probably) never be a lawyer.

What first drew you to this movie? It's a bit grittier than some of the projects you've done in the past.

Well, I initially got the script like four years ago and I loved it. »

96 Minutes Movie Review

Title: 96 Minutes Director: Aimee Lagos Starring: Brittany Snow, Evan Ross, Christian Serratos, J. Michael Trautmann, David Oyelowo If “Crash” were re-cast and re-imagined as an Atlanta-set teen drama about a carjacking gone awry, it might resemble something like “96 Minutes,” a wan thriller whose reach for socio-economic/ethnic insight and relevance far exceeds its meager grasp. Despite a few good moments and performances, overly familiar plotting and a dearth of insight doom this padded, grandiloquent melodrama, no matter its claim that it’s based on true events. A morality play of sorts, the movie focuses chiefly on a quartet of youngsters. Despite tough circumstances, Dre (Evan Ross) is set to graduate high  [ Read More ] »

Brittany Snow Interview - 96 Minutes

24 April 2012 2:14 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

Brittany Snow stars as the victim of a carjacking in the gritty indie drama, 96 Minutes. And although everyone seems to think of Snow as starring in projects that are lighter in tone, she's actually been doing a great job of mixing things up by tackling different genres and both big budget studio productions (Hairspray) and indie films (Janie Jones, The Vicious Kind). With 96 Minutes, Snow was presented with one of her most challenging - and rewarding - roles to date.

In our exclusive interview in support of 96 Minutes' April 27th release, Snow talked about playing a character fighting for her life, the appeal of the story, the very short shoot, and her upcoming film: Pitch Perfect:

Review: '96 Minutes' Is About An Hour And A Half Too Long

20 April 2012 2:41 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

You might as well be prepared: “96 Minutes” is one of those multi-strand indie movies where the chronology is distorted, and you spend the runtime putting the pieces back together. You may be interested in just how every piece fits, how we got to a girl bleeding out in the back seat of a car (probably not). But it doesn’t matter, since the same complaint for this film is the one that can be used for others of its ilk, that being that none of these stories hold up on their own. But forget all that: we need to talk about Kevin.

In “96 Minutes,” Kevin is a young sixteen-year-old white teenager living in a somewhat lower-class area of the suburbs. He comes from your garden-variety broken home, where mom comes home wasted and the boyfriend follows hours later to wail on her as Kevin plays hyper-violent video games. If you »
