Smoot got his start as a cinematographer on many of the classic "church films" produced during the 1970s at BYU for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His films while there include:
The Emmett Smith Story,
Uncle Ben,
The Mailbox,
John Baker's Last Race,
The Lost Manuscript and
Cipher in the Snow.
