10 Best Movies of the 2016 Toronto Film Festival

16 September 2016 10:21 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As the Toronto International Film Festival comes to a close, our critics choose the 10 best movies (out of a whopping 296 features) unspooled this year. From Damien Chazelle’s magical musical “La La Land” to Barry Jenkins’ intense coming-of-age drama “Moonlight,” these are the films (in alphabetical order) that left an impact.

Amanda Knox

There were many fine documentaries at Toronto, but this one carries the force of revelation. It’s about the notorious case of the 20-year-old Seattle student who, in 2007, was tried and convicted of murdering one of her roommates in a hillside village in Italy. From minute one, she was so demonized that the name “Amanda Knox” came to symbolize a twisted mythology of guilt. Yet, as co-directors Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn demonstrate definitively, most of what we think we know about Amanda Knox emerged from the overheated imagination of Fleet Street tabloid newspapers (she was a sex fiend! »

[Tiff Review] Their Finest

13 September 2016 6:20 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Ticking off multiple points on the big crowd-pleaser checklist, Their Finest is a romantic dramedy about patriotism set during World War II, with a nice splash of girl-power sentiment thrown in as well. And it has Bill Nighy. Can’t do a middle-brow British prestige picture without that guy nowadays. Whenever it hits theaters (likely around the holidays), it’ll make for a good family outing. Your mom will probably cry – and so might you, but don’t be too ashamed of yourself.

Gemma Arterton stars as Catrin Cole, a housewife in London during the Blitz who semi-stumbles into a job punching up scripts for Ministry of Information films. After interviewing twin sisters who participated in the evacuation of Dunkirk, she pitches their story to the studio, which decides to turn it into a feature. Catrin works as screenwriter alongside Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin), who’s temperamental but oh, quite fetching, »

Marvel’s movie model works, DC’s doesn’t – and Suicide Squad proves it

11 August 2016 1:25 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tony Black shares his thoughts on the state of the DC Extended Universe…

So we can all agree on one thing here, right? Suicide Squad is a disaster. Yay or nay? If you’re reading this, there’s every chance like me you thought it was almost as loud, boring and ponderous as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but not quite everyone has agreed. Not just the anti-Rotten Tomatoes contingent and their hilarious fanboy whining, but the more intelligent Joe Public. I’ve seen enough people coming out in defence of Suicide Squad to make it certainly not the kind of Batman & Robin car crash everyone looks back and laughs at. The bigger question is, to an extent, the elephant in the room – how many of us *wanted* Suicide Squad to fail?

You know what, cards on the table, I’d be lying if I said I wanted »

World War II Drama ‘Castaway’s War’ in the Works as Movie

1 August 2016 11:35 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Gold Circle has preemptively acquired movie rights to Stephen Harding’s “The Castaway’s War: One Man’s Battle Against Imperial Japan.”

Described as “‘Lone Survivor’ meets ‘Hell in the Pacific,’” the book tells the true story of U.S. Naval Lieutenant Hugh Barr Miller, a prewar football star at the University of Alabama, who went into the water as his destroyer the USS Strong was torpedoed in the Solomon Islands in 1943 and washed up desperately injured on a small Japanese-occupied island. Against all odds, Miller survived his injuries and spent a month fighting a one-man guerrilla war against the enemy outpost, the outcome of which proved pivotal in the Allied war effort.

Miller was ultimately rescued and subsequently decorated by Eleanor Roosevelt. A movie project about Miller went into development with John Wayne set to play Miller at the height of his fame.

Paul Brooks will produce “The Castaway’s War” for Gold Circle. »

Five life lessons we learned from Garry Marshall

Five life lessons we learned from Garry MarshallFive life lessons we learned from Garry MarshallAdriana Floridia7/20/2016 10:07:00 Am

Last night, Hollywood lost one of its most prolific filmmakers, Garry Marshall, who passed away at the age of eighty-one.

Marshall was known for his sentimental films that focused on love and friendship in a magical and optimistic way that was unique to his sensibilities. While he had a huge impact on television, as the creator of “Happy Days” and all of its spin-offs, he also offered the film world some of our best romantic comedies and stories of platonic love, from Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries, to Beaches and Raising Helen.

Marshall’s joy for life was evident through his storytelling, which had quite the impact on us growing up, and up until this day. At the age of eighty, Marshall was still working hard behind the camera, as »

Devious Maids Season 4 Episode 7 Review: Blood, Sweat and Smears

18 July 2016 9:17 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Devious Maids is dropping bombshells left and right.

Devious Maids Season 4 Episode 7 revealed that not only is Spence not Tucker's father, but Carmen's new boy toy is spilling to Dani everything about her birth father. We also had Zoila imagining Adrian during a makeout session with Kyle, and Marisol hooking up with Jesse again.

The best part of the episode though, had to be Evelyn moving back in with Adrian only to bring her boyfriend James with her as a form of revenge.

You see my husband, a horse's ass named Adrian.

Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 Episode 6 Review: There Be Ghosts

11 July 2016 9:40 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Quirky cases are a hit or miss proposition. Sometimes they are interesting, other times silly.

Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 Episode 6 looked like it was going to be ridiculous from the previews, but turned out to be much better than expected.

The case of the hour involved the murder of a cancer patient in what looked like an abandoned hospital. In actuality, it turned out to be a new wing that was still being worked on.

The suggestion that it was a ghost who killed her was silly, but it turned out to be an interesting clue.

Multiple murders, a ghost killer... sounds like something I would have heard about.

Obviously, Jenny Tate wasn't killed by a ghost, but the ghost angle suggested that the killer was familiar with the Hannah Rose legend, which stated »

Feed the Beast Season 1 Episode 6 Review: The Wild West

6 July 2016 2:49 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

In Feed the Beast Season 1 Episode 6, Thirio opens its doors for a successful soft opening – but between an unexpected hookup, a visit from child protective services and a gang shooting, it wasn't exactly a peaceful one.

This episode is titled "The Wild West," a reference to Dion's repeated insistence that opening a high-end restaurant in the Bronx is the equivalent of braving the Oregon Trail.

This comes up not once, but twice in this episode, and each time it made me cringe.

Watch Feed the Beast Season 1 Episode 6 Online

The scene that was simultaneously the best and worst thing about "The Wild West" was Pilar's passionate hookup with Dion prior to the restaurant's soft opening. Unlike everything that happens in the gangster scenes, it was something that I actually didn't see coming.

It was awesome to finally see Pilar grow a backbone and stand up to Dion, who has demeaned »

Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 3 Review: The Talented Mr. Rollins

5 July 2016 7:09 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

How will the liars get out of this one?

On Pretty Little Liars Season 7 Episode 3, the liars fought to get Alison away from Dr. Rollins, but the plan took a deadly turn and Hanna wound up killing him.

Elliot really had to go, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. He was a terrible villain. He didn't try and hide the fact that he had it out for the girls. He was consumed by his urge to make Alison pay for something she probably never even done.

Did anyone else notice the scar on Elliot's neck when the gals were in Ali's hospital room? Could Wren be hiding behind a mask?

It's certainly in the realm of possibility with this show. This is the show that his twins popping up everywhere, so there's that. Right now, I don't think that Elliot, or Mary are in cahoots with A. »
