A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Smith debuted on Broadway in "Grease" in 1978. He enjoyed a stint as a teen idol in the late 70s and had a gold top-10 single, "You Take My Breath Away", in 1979. He later appeared in both the stage and film versions of The Pirates of Penzance (1983), and he has also appeared on stage in "The Human Comedy", "West Side Story", "Brownstone" and "Baby". From 1982-83, he served as a co-host of the syndicated music show, "Solid Gold" (1980).

One son from an affair with Karen Lakey in 1980.

Engaged to Courtney Schrag in 1997.

In 2007, after 25 years, he returned to his hit musical "The Pirates of Penzance", this time playing the Pirate King, and earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle nomination.

Replaced Andy Gibb, in 1981, as co-host of the music variety show, "Solid Gold" (1980), when Gibb was fired for drug problems that resulted in his unreliability. Gibb died in 1988 of heart problems aggravated by his cocaine usage.

The youngest of four brothers, all of whom have careers in the music industry. Paul Evan (Evan) is a road manager; Michael was the lead singer in the band, Starz; and Webster Smith is a pianist.

Never knew he had fathered a son until Brandon Smith attended a performance of Sunset Blvd in Vancouver and approached him after the show. Brandon bears an uncanny resemblance to Rex.

He is the first actor to play the Marvel Comics' character Matt Murdock/Daredevil in an adaptation.
