She suffered a broken back and ribs in a plane crash in 1952; 25 of the 59 passengers on board were killed. After recovering, she took up a singing career. Later, she was woman's editor for the black lifestyle magazine "Our World", and was a junior high school English teacher in White Plains, N.Y.
