Country singer.
One of country music's earliest stars to have major success with honky-tonk style of the genre.
Had dozens of hits on Billboard magazine's country singles chart from 1951 to 1978, though most of his success came in the 1950s.
Retired from country music in 1977.
Daughter with first wife June Carter Cash is country-rock singer Carlene Carter.
Retired from performing in the late 1970s to his ranch near Franklin, Tennessee.
Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003.
Among his many hits from the 1950s were "Let Old Mother Nature Have Her Way," "Are You Teasing Me," "It's a Lovely Lovely World," "Just Wait Until I Get You Alone," "Hey Joe," "Back Up Buddy," "(When You're in Love) Don't Just Stand There," and "Loose Talk."
Recorded for Columbia Records (now Sony Music) from 1951 to 1973. Later, he joined Hickory Records in the mid-1970s, where he continued to record until his 1977 retirement.
He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 1517 Vine Street in Hollywood, California.
Retired as a horse breeder on his ranch near Franklin, Tennessee.
