Casting Director: Bernard Telsey Director: Jonathan Demme Writer: Jenny Lumet Starring: Anne Hathaway, Rosemarie DeWitt, Debra Winger, Bill Irwin The Pitch: Emotionally unstable Kym (Hathaway) leaves rehab to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel (DeWitt) and dredges up some old demons along the way.Bernard Telsey was delighted when he got word that Jonathan Demme wanted him to cast Rachel Getting Married, which marks the director's return to fictional independent film. Telsey, primarily known for casting A-list theatre projects (including the original productions of Rent and Wicked), was even more pleased when he learned that Demme wanted to fill most of the film's roles with top-notch New York stage actors. "It was wonderful," says Telsey of working with the director, "because in this case Jonathan said, 'I see this movie as a big ensemble piece, almost as a theatre piece.' He wanted to bring in people from all »

Frozen River claims top prize at the Gotham Awards

3 December 2008 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Ballast might have lead the total number of nominations, but it is Frozen River who picked up a pair, including Gotham Awards’ top prize. Really? If I were a betting man I’d have guessed right in two categories (Breakthrough Director and Actor), guessed half right in one (Best Ensemble) and would have terribly been wrong but pleasantly surprised with the Best Documentary going to Trouble the Water, and finally I’d would have been wrong on guessing Best Feature, and as you can guess, I’m perplexed on how Courtney Hunt’s border crossing drama faired a better chance in a category that was loaded in quality features.  Best FEATUREBallast - Lance Hammer, director; Lance Hammer, Nina Parikh, producers (Alluvial Film Company)Frozen River - Courtney Hunt, director; Heather Rae, Chip Hourihan, producers (Sony Pictures Classics)Synecdoche, New York - Charlie Kaufman, director; Anthony Bregman, Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jonze, »

Back Stage Q&A: Anna Deavere Smith

27 October 2008 1:59 AM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Actor-writer Anna Deavere Smith is a multiple Obie and Drama Desk Award winner who may be best known for her multi-character, one-person shows, such as Fires in the Mirror: Crown Heights, Brooklyn and Other Identities, and Twilight: Los Angeles 1992. For the latter, she earned a Broadway transfer, a Theatre World Award, and two Tony nominations (best actress and best play). She also has had a recurring role on The West Wing and is featured in the current Anne Hathaway film Rachel Getting Married. That is but a fraction of Smith's work, however. In addition to her plays, she has written two books (Letters to a Young Artist, and Talk to Me: Travels in Media and Politics). She also teaches at New York University and is concerned about arts and education. On Monday, Oct. 27, she will take part in a discussion, "Art and Educational Justice," as part of the closing night of the Harold Clurman Festival, »

Ballast dominates 18th Gotham Indie Film Award noms

20 October 2008 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- The Ifp announced the nominees for the 18th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards and not surprisingly, it is Lance Hammer’s Ballast that came out on top with four noms: Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, Breakthrough Actor and Best Ensemble Performance. Hammer’s eloquent rendering of a fractured family tree is such a solid film that we can expect a repeat pattern in nominations for the Indie Spirit Awards.  While nominations in many of the categories hold up well (Best Ensemble and both Breakthrough categories), it is the Best Feature category’s exclusion of Antonio CamposAfterschool and Ramin Bahrani’s Chop Shop and the inclusion of The Visitor and Frozen River that makes me wonder if the four person nominating committee had a different mandate for their selection process. While McCarthy’s film certainly has a collection of strong moments and Frozen River counts on a fine white-trash perf from Leo, »

Tiff Review: Rachel Getting Married

4 September 2008 6:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Rachel Getting Married is a terse, smart, funny and tough family drama about forgiveness and failure written by Jenny Lumet; it's also a loose, smart, broad and bright film about family and love directed by Jonathan Demme. When these two things are in sync, the end result is something truly impressive - a moving story that appeals to your heart and soul without insulting your intelligence, a film full of big scenes that never stoops to the most obvious possible iteration of those big scenes, a movie loaded with great and sincere performances from the top down. When the two parts of Rachel Getting Married fall out of synch - as they do, most notably, in the last third of the film during Demme's raucous, joyous post-wedding reception - it's less catastrophic than it is curious, and the final film is still very much worth watching.

Rachel's Getting Married But Anne Is Just Dating

3 September 2008 2:00 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Anne Hathaway posed pretty at the Venice Film Festival earlier today promoting her new movie Rachel Getting Married. Judging by the trailer, she plays a bit of a badass but in real life she's still nursing a broken heart not helped by an upcoming story in Vanity Fair that reveals how she called ex Rafaello Follieri the love of her life. Thankfully, it sounds like she's starting to move on. According to Life & Style, she was spotted getting cozy with hot Josh Lucas at the Democratic National Convention last week. At the very least it sounds like they have politics in common even if it's nothing more than friendly rebound flirting for Anne. Edie Falco series close at Showtime

17 July 2008 7:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Showtime is close to giving a series pickup to its dark comedy starring Edie Falco.

The premium cable network is expected to make the announcement as soon as Friday at its presentation to the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour at the Beverly Hilton.

The network put the untitled single-camera comedy, co-produced by Showtime and Lionsgate TV, on the fast track in February when it picked it up to pilot. The project stars Falco as a strong-willed, iconoclastic New York nurse juggling the frenzied grind of an urban hospital and an equally challenging personal life. Peter Facinelli, Paul Schulze, Merritt Wever, Eve Best, Haaz Sleiman and Anna Deavere Smith co-starred in the pilot, written by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem and Evan Dunsky.

Wallem and Brixius serve as executive producers/showrunners. Caryn Mandabach also executive produces.

Word of the impending green light comes on the heels of Showtime's series pickup of the Diablo Cody-penned comedy "The United States of Tara," from DreamWorks TV and Steven Spielberg. Also in contention for a series pickup at Showtime is the Tim Robbins-penned drama "Possible Side Effects."

Showtime is on roll of late, having nabbed 21 Emmy noms Thursday -- its most in a single year. »

Edie Falco Showtime pilot adds cast

7 May 2008 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Peter Facinelli has joined the cast of Showtime's untitled Edie Falco pilot.

In addition, Paul Schulze, Merritt Wever, Eve Best and Haaz Sleiman have come aboard as series regulars, and Anna Deavere Smith has signed on as a recurring.

The dark comedy project, co-produced by Showtime and Lionsgate TV, centers on a strong-willed New York nurse (Falco).

Facinelli will play Dr. Cooper, a likable "golden boy" who appears to be in control but is actually a bundle of nerves.

Schulze will play Falco's boyfriend, Eddie, a pharmacy tech. He is repped by Innovative Artists and manager Kyle Fritz.

Wever is playing Zoey, a first-year nurse. She is repped by Innovative and Lisa Loosemore at Viking Entertainment.

Sleiman is set as Maurice, aka Momo, a gay Muslim nurse. Best is playing Dr. O'Hara, a loner whose only friend at the hospital is Falco. Smith will recur as Mrs. Akalitus, the reluctant hospital administrator. »
