500 Days of Zooey Deschanel

14 July 2009 3:20 PM, PDT | From Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news

I saw Zooey Deschanel sing before I saw her act. It was at a pre-Oscars house party in Los Angeles in 2002 or 2003. Deschanel and another actress, Samantha Shelton, had formed a duo called If All The Stars Were Pretty Babies—taken from the title of a 1926 song by Billy Rose and Fred Fisher—and were performing occasional gigs around town. That night, they were the evening’s entertainment. Dressed in vintage Flapper-ware, they sang jazz standards and chestnuts from the 20s, 30s and 40s, and, to use a word from those times, were simply beguiling. Then came Elf, and the realization—a little late on my part, perhaps—that Deschanel could act as well. Her disarming performance as Jovie is one of the main reasons that Elf is a perennial holiday favorite in my household along with the original animated version of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas and

What If the Entire Senate Were Composed of Saturday Night Live Alumni?

1 July 2009 12:52 PM, PDT | From Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news

By Henry Alford and David Kamp July 2009 Caucus on crucial bank-rescue package falls apart because Sen. Jimmy Fallon (D-ny) can’t stop giggling. September 2009 Sen. Robert Smigel (D-il) provokes international crisis by prodding buttocks of Ukranian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko with rubber dog puppet; protestations of “I keeed!” fail to allay the outrage. November 2009 Fellow Senators critique the Basketball Reform Bill of Sen. Will Ferrell (D-ca), saying it is merely a warmed-over version of his earlier Ice-Skating Reform Bill, which was in turn a warmed-over version of his earlier Nascar Reform Bill. January 2010 Majority leader asks producer/talent-wrangler Marci Klein to find him “the next Barbara Mikulski.” March 2010 Sen. Victoria Jackson (R-fl) leaves meeting with Small Farmers Conference confused by absence of tiny farmers. April 2010 Congressional Quarterly offers lighthearted profile of slovenly Capitol Hill rowhouse shared by Sens. David Spade (R-az), Adam Sandler (D-nh), Rob Schneider (R-ca), and Chris Rock (D-ny). June 2010 Sen.

The Dana Carvey Show

25 June 2009 9:35 AM, PDT | From Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news

DVD Release Date: May 12

Creators: Dana Carvey, Robert Smigel

Starring: Dana Carvey, Robert Smigel, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carrell, Bill Chott, Elon Gold

Network: ABC

One of the best TV writing staffs ever assembled mostly delivers on its promise

Not a big hit during its initial 1996 run, The Dana Carvey Show has gained a certain legendary status less for its actual episodes, which were previously difficult to see, than by the notoriety of its staff during the years that followed. Aside from Carvey himself, the show was written and acted by Steve Carrell, Stephen Colbert, Charlie Kaufman, Robert Smigel, Louis C.K., Dino Stamatopoulos, Bill Chott and Spike Ferestein. Just knowing who’s in the group, it’s easy to see why the common assumption had been that it must’ve been brilliant and cancelled for being too ahead of its time.

Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama And Hillary Clinton Finally Get Together… For A Comic Book

25 June 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | From MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news

Don’t let the cover of Bluewater Productions’ new “Female Force: Volume I” fool you. Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have not formed a ladies’ version of the Justice League — which is too bad, because there’s a great crossover to be had with Robert Smigel’s X-Presidents.

While Palin is indeed brawling in at least one comic — Devil’s Due Publishing’s “Barack the Barbarian” — Bluewater instead opted for a non-fiction series about prominent figures such as Oprah Winfrey and Condoleezza Rice, several of whom appear in the new “Female Force” collection.

“We have seen there is a considerable market for this type of comic,” announced Bluewater president Darren Davis. “We believe this issue of collected life stories will be the first of many volumes.”

The first four issues of the series assembled in the new volume detail the lives of Palin, Obama, Clinton, and Caroline Kennedy. The book

In ‘Tonight Show’ Debut, Triumph Takes Down Beastie Boys At Bonnaroo

22 June 2009 7:53 AM, PDT | From MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news

When Conan O’Brien moved from the 12:30 slot to the more high-profile “Tonight Show,” there was concern in the media (and in the MTV newsroom) that O’Brien wouldn’t be able to be as aggressively weird as he was allowed to be on his old show. But on Friday, a familiar face returned to the fray: Former Eminem rival Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, who took his microphone to Bonnaroo to poke fun at dirty hippies and take down a handful of bands, including TV on the Radio and the Beastie Boys. Triumph’s Beasties interview was probably the finest bit, which saw Robert Smigel’s puppet note, “It used to be ‘Check Your Head’ and now it’s ‘Check Your Prostate.’” Check out the entire clip below.

Smigel’s early career took a turn through Chicago in the mid-1980’s, and when he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer/performer in 1985 he helped develop the now iconic “Da Bears” sketch, where he played Superfan Carl Wollarski.

Eminem And Triumph The Insult Comic Dog Are Both Set To Appear At The MTV Movie Awards… Will Sparks Fly Again?

29 May 2009 3:16 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

This fact hasn’t been discussed too much, but Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is one of the presenters at this Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. Longtime MTV viewers should be well aware of why this is significant, particularly with Eminem on the performance roster, but I’ll fill the rest of you in on the history. Make no mistake, there is quite a history.

Triumph has appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards numerous times. Since dishing out insults is sort of his “thing,” some of those appearances have been… well… problematic. And where Eminem is concerned, they’ve been downright explosive. Triumph interviewed a number of celebs at the 2002 Video Music Awards, but was shoved away by Eminem’s bodyguards when he approached the rapper. Triumph responded later in the evening with a mock press conference in which he told Eminem to “lighten up.”

Eminem and his celebrity-baiting alter ego, Slim Shady, have been embroiled in some of the most memorable pop feuds of our time. Whether he was attempting to separate himself from the "Trl" pack or simply losing his cool, the rapper has wielded his razor sharp lyrics at famous people and family members alike with great aim. And while some of these sticky situations have resulted in happy endings and hilarious lyrics, others are still unresolved. Here, MTV News presents five of his top attacks and parodies:

DVD: Review: The Dana Carvey Show

12 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

In the 13 years since The Dana Carvey Show went off the air, its host has gone from being the show’s marquee attraction to being one of its biggest liabilities. So it’s curious that the frustratingly bare-bones, long-overdue DVD features a cheap-looking cover image of him half-smiling in front of a bare wall instead of highlighting cast members Robert Smigel, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Carell. As Carvey’s star has faded, the show’s legend has grown in proportion to the soaring career arcs of Smigel, Colbert, Carell, and a writing staff that included Charlie Kaufman, Louis C ...

Were you even aware that SNL's Dana Carvey had his own sketch comedy show?  I was apparently intoxicated or incarcerated during it's short ABC run in 1996, but with a cast that includes Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, and Robert Smigel (all of whom also served as writers alongside Charlie Kaufman(!)) I knew I had to eventually see it.  All eight episodes, including the final one that never aired, are included. Blu-ray? No Penn & Teller: Bullshit! DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets.
