Conan and Dave: Kindred spirits in the late-night wars

17 May 2012 12:43 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

That’s one way to look at the relationship between David Letterman and Conan O’Brien, who reunite tonight on Letterman’s program. The then-unproven O’Brien succeeded Letterman on Late Night in 1993, and later they were head-to-head rivals for seven months during O’Brien’s brief and tumultuous reign as host of The Tonight Show. Both men, at similar points in their television careers, found themselves grasping the short end of the stick in passive-aggressive tangles with Jay Leno and downright hostile relations with NBC over late-night’s showcase program.

Trailer for ‘This Is 40′: Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd Will Try to Do Better

27 April 2012 10:30 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Here comes This Is 40, Judd Apatow‘s self-confessed “sort-of sequel” to Knocked Up, and while it looks like Paul Rudd‘s Pete and Leslie Mann‘s Debbie have sufficiently ironed out their relationship issues, pretty much everything else seems to be falling apart around them. Mortified by their imminent aging (Debbie, in particular, refuses to accept that she’s now turning the big 4-0), the pair embark on a new way of life, thanks to Debbie’s “do better” list. As the film’s first trailer shows us, they have plenty to do when it comes to doing better. They’ll work out! They’ll stand up to bullies! They will make their kids spend more time outside! They’ll probably totally muck up everything! While the trailer’s use of fun.’s “We Are Young” is both too spot-on and too grating, this first look at This Is 40 shows that the film should be »

Jack Black Opens Up

25 April 2012 8:39 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

When I met with Jack Black at a Midtown Manhattan hotel, he was fighting a sore throat. Black's under the weather demeanor, lounging on the couch in what can be best described as "I'm sick, so I want to be comfortable" attire, gave the entire proceeding a sense of informality. An informality that resulted in (A) Black all but admitting that he wanted to talk about other subjects than the film he was promoting, "Bernie," and (B) me feeling so comfortable that I openly admitted my disdain for Black's 2009 film, "Gulliver's Travels" -- which I immediately regretted.

In "Bernie," Black is reunited with his "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater to play Bernie Tiede -- the true story of a Texas funeral director who is charged with the murder of an elderly widow, played by Shirley McLaine. Here, Black discusses if the dark comedy of "Bernie" signals a shift in his career trajectory, »

Review: Morgan Spurlock's 'A Fan’s Hope' Comic-Con Documentary, Is An Amiable & Harmless Look At Geek Culture

3 April 2012 10:57 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Celebrating its 40th anniversary later this year, Comic-Con, while originally a convention for comic book and science fiction/fantasy enthusiasts, has expanded into an annual pop-culture juggernaut that, as Kevin Smith says, has gone mainstream; in his view on par with Cannes, Sundance and even the Olympics. Even your mom has heard about it.

Now a sprawling mecca-like convention for film, television, horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, fantasy novels and more, Comic-Con has invaded every element and facet of pop-culture for better or worse, which is where Morgan Spurlock’s “Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope” documentary focuses its affable gaze.

Featuring testimonials by self-described geeks such as the aforementioned Kevin Smith, Joss Whedon (a producer/writer on the film), Seth Green, Harry Knowles (an executive producer on the film), Seth Rogen, Eli Roth, Stan Lee (another producer), and many more -- while clearly »

'Bob's Burgers': Ep Loren Bouchard discusses his improbable rise to 'Animation Domination'

9 March 2012 12:10 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

There are many notable stories of how celebrities got their start in Hollywood. Charlize Theron was discovered while waiting in line at the bank. Justin Bieber rocketed to fame after posting videos on YouTube. But on the order of improbability, "Bob's Burgers" creator Loren Bouchard has them all beat.

Bouchard explains that in the early 1990s he was living in Boston, not doing that much with his life, when a chance encounter with his eighth grade science teacher changed everything. It just so happened that this teacher was Tom Snyder, the man who was in the process of creating the animated series "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist."

"I ran into him and he said 'You know, we're just getting started on these one-minute shorts for Comedy Central. Do you still draw?'," Bouchard recalls. "I wasn't even drawing at the time. I had no skill really to offer him. But I lied and said, »

Happy 50th Birthday, Jon Bon Jovi!

2 March 2012 12:01 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Jon Bon Jovi turned 50 today, and to celebrate, here are 13 fun facts worth remembering:

1. Jon Bon Jovi was nominated for an Oscar for penning “Blaze of Glory” for Young Guns II. As Young Guns II writer John Fusco told EW on the movie’s 20th anniversary, he used Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” as “mood music” while writing the first Young Guns because it captured the contemporary rock & roll cowboy feel he was going for in his telling of the Billy the Kid story. Fusco told star Emilio Estevez that on a research road trip, and Estevez asked »

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Ruffs Up the Golden Collar Awards (Video)

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog crashes the Golden Collar Awards -- Video

24 February 2012 8:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

A few days after claiming the Golden Collar Awards were “fixed,” Conan O’Brien’s cigar-chomping canine correspondent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog crashed the Jan. 13 ceremony. The footage finally made it to air last night on Conan. Behold the irascible mutt as he accuses a tiara-clad Cavalier King Charles spaniel of having “work done” (you’ll have to watch to see which TV personality he holds up as her “Before” picture), makes below-the-collar accusations about Blackie the Doberman from Hugo, and accosts a Real House Pet of Beverly Hills. But which prime-time pooch finally takes Triumph down a peg? »

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog wants his Golden Collar Award: Calls his competition 'fixed'

9 February 2012 11:11 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Once Martin Scorsese successfully lobbied to get Blackie, the Doberman from Hugo, on the ballot for the clearly prestigious Golden Collar Award, you knew it was just a matter of time before other press-hounds instituted their own publicity campaigns. No surprise then that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has mounted a “No Justice! No Poop!” effort to get on the ballot. In a video, the wise-cracking pooch says, “While I understand that awards shows are trivial, and there are more important things we should be focusing on — like whether Gisele is a crazy b—h — it is a tragedy that »
