'Somebody to Love': The Coen brothers' rock and roll epiphany

21 October 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Given what audacious, far-ranging, and sensually intoxicated filmmakers they are, Joel and Ethan Coen have never shown much of a rock & roll side. Okay, there was The Big Lebowski (1998), that deadbeat-soul-of-Los Angeles stoner cult classic. It was sprinkled with Dylan, Creedence, and Elvis, and it had that one goofily farfetched moment of surreal jukebox rapture: a druggy dream sequence, set to Kenny Rogers' 1968 hit "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," that was like Busby Berkeley on peyote at the bowling alley. I saw The Big Lebowski again recently, and sorry, I'm still not wild »

Jefferson Airplane Sets the Stage for the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man

17 September 2009 9:04 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The basic theme of the Coen brothers' A Serious Man is universal: An ordinary man in a settled life finds that everything he has taken for granted is coming apart at the seams. His wife is leaving, his children aren't living up to expectations, and he is facing mysterious troubles at work. But it's not just any time and place. It's 1967 Minneapolis and the times they are a changing.

One sign of the changing times, with a prominent place in the movie, is Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love." The Cohen brothers explained to the New York Times that the song spoke to their own experiences growing up in the Midwest and provided just the right counterpoint to the more traditional elements of the suburban Jewish community where the movie takes place.

It came early on. It was in the script.... Jefferson Airplane in general, that song in particular ... says »

Woodstock a Bad Trip for the Bands

11 August 2009 2:01 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By David Comfort

Though Woodstock was a sublime event for many of its 500,000 attendees, it had been something less for the 400 in triage for bad acid trips, not to mention the three who died straight. And, though it launched some of its 36 bands -- notably Santana, Csn, Sly and the Family Stone -- it was a downer for others.

Pete Townshend of the Who called the historic festival of peace and love “horrible.” Grace Slick of the Jefferson Airplane described it as “a bunch of stupid slobs in the mud.” Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish noted: “When they »

“Never in his two and a half years with the Experience had Jimi exhibited such disregard for professionalism.”

Collector's Choice: Woodstock, In Love We Trust, Eternal Sunshine on Blu-Ray

9 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

-   Slim pickings this Tuesday (June 9th 2009) as there are only a trio of titles worth recommending. Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut is a fully equipped edition (see details below) of the Michael Wadleigh documentary film, a great father's day present that curiously comes out before Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock and not sometime in August when Woodstock took place. Film Movement offers Wang Xiaoshuai's 10th film as a director with In Love We Trust - a contemporary drama set in Beijing, involving two mid-aged couples. Adapted from a true story, the story of Zuo You is about the relationship crisis and emotional unrest of two couples, when the son of the divorced couple is found to have leukemia. In need of a bone marrow transplant, the only way to save the teenage boy is for the divorced couple to give birth to another baby, which will jeopardize current relationships. »
