Costume Designers' Guild to celebrate Judd Apatow

18 December 2013 5:40 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

When you think of contemporary filmmakers who are particularly keyed into the art of costume design, you might name Baz Luhrmann, Tarsem Singh or Xavier Dolan -- but Judd Apatow probably wouldn't be among the first names to come to mind. Still, take a closer look at his work as a director and producer, and you'll find several films in which contemporary or casual costumes add much to the storytelling: think those class-defining bridal designs in the Apatow-produced "Bridesmaids," or Steve Carell's neatly fitted but utterly hopeless wardrobe in "The 40 Year-Old Virgin." The Costume Designers' Guild clearly feels that way, »

Luke Evans interview: Hobbit, green screen acting and 48fps

Interview Ryan Lambie 18 Dec 2013 - 06:52

The Desolation Of Smaug introduces Luke Evans' character, Bard the Bowman. We find out his thoughts on The Hobbit, acting, 48fps and more...

Since the start of his big-screen career three or four years ago, Welsh actor Luke Evans has played a variety of characters, often united by their colourful period costumes. He tore through ancient Greece in a shining suit of armour as Apollo in Clash Of The Titans. He wore a jaunty hat and a dapper velvet jacket as Aramis in The Three Musketeers. He donned a fetching gold cloak and precious little else in Tarsem Singh's madly embellished Immortals.

His odyssey through the costumes of Hollywood myth and fantasy continues with The Desolation Of Smaug, where he takes on the role of Bard the Bowman. His garb may be more sensible and less revealing than some of his earlier parts, »

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Guide – December 9th 2013

9 December 2013 3:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Apologies to the five or so of you who read this with any regularity, there was no column last week. Day job woes and Christmas combined to stomp my ass into a fug of inactivity in terms of watching and writing about it. Therefore you get a bumper edition this week with two weeks’ worth of content.

In other big news House of Cards returns to Netflix with season two in February and the Turbo super-fast snail animated series, based on that DreamWorks film that recently came out, debuts in December. Now TV also has you covered during Christmas week by adding a new big title pretty much every day between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day, although apart from Elf on Now TV and a dedicated Christmas selection, there is a disturbing lack of Christmas themed films on the other services.

Someone add National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and Gremlins quick! »

Release Dates Set for ‘Veronica Mars’ Movie & Tarsem’s ‘Selfless’

7 December 2013 3:59 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

While the year 2015 promises to be one for the blockbuster record books (Star Wars: Episode VIIBatman Vs. Superman, Avengers 2, Jurassic World, Mad Max 4, Terminator 5, Ant-Man, and more), 2014 has plenty of memorable releases in store as well, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and Transformers 4.

With all these high profile projects fighting for the moviegoer’s attention, many small releases are certain to get lost in the mix. Of those, however, the successfully fan-rebooted movie version of the gone-too-soon TV detective series Veronica Mars is likely to stay in the public eye. The show’s creator Rob Thomas ...

Focus Features has moved the U.S. release of Ryan Reynolds‘ sci-fier “Selfless” five months to Feb. 27, 2015, where it’s now the first title on the date.

FilmDistrict, which has been absorbed into Focus, had set the date for the pic earlier this year for Sept. 26, 2014.

The film is about a terminally ill billionaire who buys a chance for eternal life through an experimental underground medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the cadaver of a younger man.

The film is directed by Tarsem Singh. Endgame Entertainment and FilmDistrict co-financed “Selfless” after jointly acquiring the screenplay by Alex Pastor and David Pastor (“Carriers”).

Focus also announced that it will release the FilmDistrict title “That Awkward Moment,” starring Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, on its previously announced Jan. 31 date.

New ‘Hercules: The Legend Begins’ Trailer: A Half-God Goes to War

26 November 2013 11:46 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There will be two Hercules movies hitting theaters in 2014. One stars Dwayne Johnson (Fast & Furious 7) – playing an older version of Herc who has devolved into a world-weary mercenary for hire – while the other is titled Hercules: The Legend Begins and features Twilight alum Kellan Lutz playing a younger version of Zeus’ son (who could be mistaken for a JCrew model).

Much like the Comic-Con preview footage, the newly-unveiled trailer for The Legend Begins illustrates the continuing influence of Zack Snyder’s 300 on the swords and sandals genre. Question is, following less impressionable acts like the Clash of the Titans remake and Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, have audiences grown tired of seeing ancient world mythology given the modern pop-action movie treatment (see: slick digital visuals, 3D effects, etc.)?

The top 25 must-see movies of 2014

Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 1 Nov 2013 - 06:28

Next year’s full of potentially great films, so to help, here’s a list of 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2014...

These lists of anticipated forthcoming movies have become an annual fixture by now, and as ever, our selection has been tricky to whittle down. In restricting our list to just 25, we've tried to create a mix of the high-profile and the less obvious. Movies such as Non-Stop, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Big Hero Six and Edge Of Tomorrow came close but didn't quite make the cut, even though they have much to offer for their own reasons.

Furthermore, given the number of films competing for space, we've left the latest chapters of The Hunger Games and The Hobbit off the list. We're keen to see both, but we're wary of taking up slots with movies »

Check Out This Trippy Trailer For Mindscape, Starring Mark Strong And Taissa Farmiga

29 October 2013 4:39 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

If psychological thrillers are your thing, get ready for a cinematic excursion into the mind and memories of a character to determine whether they are a killer or a victim. From first time director Jorge Dorado and producer Jaume Collet-Serra comes Mindscape, a crime thriller with a dash of mind-exploring madness.

Leading man Mark Strong plays John Washington, a detective with the unique ability to enter people’s minds and memories (presumably to help people recall event details pertinent to solving cases). Washington takes on the case of a troubled teenage girl named Anna, played by up-and-coming young actress Taissa Farmiga, who is accused of an attempted triple homicide. To uncover the mystery surrounding Anna and her story, Washington will enter her mind and try to find out the truth: is Anna capable of killing, or is there something hidden in her memories that shows otherwise?

Trippy, huh? The film obviously brings Inception to mind, »

Mindscape Trailer Puts Mark Strong Inside Taissa Farmiga's Memories

28 October 2013 1:14 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Who out there has been waiting with bated breath for a thriller to come along that mashes Christopher Nolan.s mind-bending Inception with the inner-mind-wandering madness of Tarsem Singh.s The Cell? Because that movie is here, and it.s called Mindscape. The Spanish-made film is the first feature directed by Jorge Dorado and first-time writer Guy Holmes, and it has just dropped its first English language trailer, as seen above. You.ll notice the preview and most news out there about the film relies heavily on telling people director Jaume Collet-Serra produced this film, and had a hand in getting it made. Unlike most films that hinge themselves to a name to sell the film to audiences, I think Mindscape actually looks better than any of Collet-Serra.s films, including the Liam Neeson action flick Unknown and the weird evil child horror Orphan. A good psychological thriller is so »

10 Movies Everyone Hated That Are Great In Retrospect

“You’re wrong. And here’s why…” The gloriously satisfying few words you can use to intellectually smash your opponent next time they try to tell you Knowing or Event Horizon are big ‘ol stinkers.

The following list doesn’t just comprise of some misunderstood films you may have a better time with than first thought, but contains some genuine gems that by circumstance or ignorance have been criminally overlooked.

10. The Cell

Tarsem Singh’s first feature, The Cell, is a violently underrated descent into the beautifully depraved mind of a killer. It was widely panned upon its 2000 release with critics and the public alike mounting a venomous assault against, as Common Sense Media put it, a movie with “no plot, no logic, no meaning”.

Behind J-Lo’s skin-tight muscle onsie and the music video visuals, lies a brave, captivating cocktail of genres and creativity unrivaled on its release. I »

HBO orders a pilot for Westworld TV series

31 August 2013 8:37 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Deadline is reporting that HBO has placed "one of its biggest commitments ever" ordering a pilot from Warner Bros. TV for a series based around Michael Crichton's classic sci-fi thriller Westworld, which is to be produced by Jonathan Nolan (Person of Interest) and Jerry Weintraub (Ocean's Eleven), along with J.J. Abrams' (Star Trek Into Darkness) Bad Robot. The script for the pilot has been written by Nolan and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), while Nolan will also tackle directing duties.

Released in 1973, Westworld starred Richard Benjamin and James Brolin as two guests visiting a futuristic Western themed amusement park, only to find themselves stalked by Yul Brynner's android gunslinger after a computer malfunction. A big screen remake has been on the cards for several years now, with Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Last Stand) linked to the Brynner role and Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror) previously attached to direct. »

Jonah Nolan & J.J. Abrams Plan Westworld Series For HBO

In the last decade or so there have been several attempts to remake Michael Crichton’s 1973 cult sci-fi pic Westworld on the big screen, with Joel Silver taking a stab, Arnold Schwarzenegger considering starring and, in 2005, Tarsem Singh attached to direct. Now, genre titans Jonah Nolan and J.J. AbramsBad Robot company have united to bring the story as a series to HBO.It’s all thanks to producer Jerry Weintraub – himself a man of considerable influence – who has been driving the remake idea for years. It’s not yet known how closely the show’s plotline will mirror the original story, though we'd guess the basics will stay: holidaymakers at an amusement park for adults are menaced when the robot characters (particularly a gunslinger played by Yul Brynner) malfunction and turn homicidal. As of right now, the Us cable channel (home to Game Of Thrones and True Blood) has »

'Immortals' Director To Make Sci-Fi Thriller

Tarsem Singh, director of the 2011 fantasy action movie "Immortals," has been tapped by Good Universe to direct "The Panopticon," an original action thriller with science-fiction elements. The movie's script is written by Craig Rosenberg, known to some for his work in "After the Sunset." "The Panopticon" follows a seemingly ordinary man who receives a mysterious package containing a pre-recorded message from himself, warning that the world is about to end and only he can save it. He must race against the clock to piece together the puzzle before time runs out for mankind. The title is a reference to a theoretical prison institution developed by 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham, where a watchman is able to observe the inmates without their knowledge. Tarsem To Direct Sci-Fi Thriller 'The Panopticon,' Mira Nair To Helm 'Bengali Detective'

Even with three of his films experiencing less-than-stellar critical reception, the majestic images and decent box office of Tarsem Singh's work have still allowed the “Mirror, Mirror” director a bevy of upcoming projects. His “Marco Polo” biopic is currently in the pre-production stages, and while Tarsem is set to next helm the Ryan Reynolds sci-fi drama “Selfless,” he's just been announced to stay within the same high-concept wheelhouse in the immediate future. The Wrap reports Tarsem will enter “The Panopticon,” an original sci-fi thriller written by Craig Rosenberg (“After The Sunset”), which follows an ordinary man who receives a mysterious package containing a message from himself—one that warns of the world's end if he doesn't find a way to prevent it. Good Universe and Andrew Lazar (“Get Smart”) will produce the flick, which might need Tarsem's signature style to rise above that rather vanilla setup. Meanwhile, a »
