- Manager of the highly political 1960's rock group, the Motor City Five (or "MC5" for short), which was part of the White Panther Party, an off-shoot of the Black Panther Party.
- In July 1969, he was sentenced to 9 1/2 to 10 years in prison for possession of two marijuana cigarettes (or "joints"). An international outcry against the sentence, which many people saw as a political attack against the New Left, ensued. Sinclair was released in December 1971 after having served twenty-nine months of his sentence.
- John Lennon's song "John Sinclair", which appeared on Lennon's album "Some Time in New York City", was written as plea for his release.
