In July 1969, he was sentenced to 9 1/2 to 10 years in prison for possession of two marijuana cigarettes (or "joints"). An international outcry against the sentence, which many people saw as a political attack against the New Left, ensued. Sinclair was released in December 1971 after having served twenty-nine months of his sentence. See more »
