Steven Spielberg will not advise Democrats, says aide

23 December 2010 3:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Washington Post report had suggested film-maker and Democratic supporter would help with party rebranding exercise

Oscar-winning film-maker Steven Spielberg has denied reports he is to advise the Us Democratic party on a forthcoming PR offensive.

The Washington Post said yesterday Spielberg had agreed to help with a rebranding exercise being put together by Nancy Pelosi, the outgoing House of Representatives speaker. "The most prominent of her new whisperers is Steven Spielberg, the Hollywood director whose films have been works of branding genius," said a piece about Pelosi's transition to Congress minority leader written by Philip Rucker and Paul Kane.

Spielberg is a devoted supporter of the Democrats, in the past endorsing Hillary Clinton and backing President Barack Obama's various fundraising efforts. However Marvin Levy, the film-maker's spokesman, yesterday said Spielberg had no plans to enter politics.

The Best—and Worst—Christmas Music of 2010

18 December 2010 12:30 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Check it out: Kanye West, Rihanna, Coldplay, Mariah Carey, Killers, Jessica Simpson, Lady Antebellum, Paul Simon and the Glee cast are all doing it this year. Though Christmas comes just once a year, royalty checks for Christmas CDs come all year round, which may explain why so many holiday anthems are still recorded despite the fact that we have plenty already. What, too Grinchy? Maybe we shouldn't complain, because each year we get new holiday music that's worth the fuss, whether it's the Hannaukah-harmonizing Maccabeats. Or a gift-filled online advent calendar courtesy of a bunch of cartoon band Gorillaz. Or, uh, this. With that in mind, here are some new Christmas offerings for »

Some Stocking Stuffer Ideas for a Horrifying Holiday

15 December 2010 5:12 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I know our favorite holiday has passed, and now it's all commercialism and Christmas carols unless you want to pull a Tobe Hooper at Sears, but there are a few gift ideas that might be really appreciated if found in those black stockings hanging by the fireplace Christmas morning.

1. First is the trilogy of Zombie Haiku, Werewolf Haiku and Vampire Haiku, all written by Ryan Mecum and published by How Books. The werewolf book tells the tale of a postman after he has been bitten by a "rabid" dog and his both frightening and hilarious degeneration into a werewolf. A couple of examples:

"If you think tacos

are hard for you to digest,

try passing chipmunks."

Or

"In conversation,

burping up a severed toe

can make things awkward."

The vampire haiku book tells the tale of one William Butten, who was "changed" by a mysterious woman on board a ship »

Carrie Fisher’s ‘Wishful Drinking’ hits HBO tonight

12 December 2010 9:54 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By Greg Hernandez

HollywoodNews.com: Carrie Fisher has had one helluva life.

She’s got a movie star for a mom (Debbie Reynolds) and a famous singer for a dad (Eddie Fisher) and Elizabeth Taylor and Connie Stevens among her stepmothers.

Among her ex-husbands is singer Paul Simon and her half-sister is actress Joely Fisher.

That’s just the family stuff.

Carrie herself became a huge movie star playing Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy and went on to become an acclaimed novelist and screenwriter (‘Postcards From the Edge’).

Through it all, she has battled drug addiction and mental illness and developed a brilliant sense of humor and openness about it all.

That’s why you have got to watch her new HBO special ‘Wishful Drinking’ which premieres tonight. She is a 54-year-old poster child for the thrills and pitfalls of growing up in Hollywood.

Daft Punk Scores With ‘Tron: Legacy’ Soundtrack

7 December 2010 12:30 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

When it was announced 18 months ago that half-French/half-robot DJ duo Daft Punk were on board to score and produce the soundtrack for the upcoming “Tron: Legacy,” as much was made of the duo’s involvement as the movie itself.

The blogs went wet, gushing over the synergy between the group’s dancey, futuristic sounds and the glimmering futureworld of a film based on a 1982 movie that, at the time, was at the forefront of computer graphic imagery.

But to paraphrase Paul Simon, If you took all the Daft Punk film collaborations, they’d never match my sweet imagination.

Untainted fantasy is usually better than reality and with the massive marketing blitz being showered on Daft Punk, the end result is a lot of sound and fury signifying, well, not nothing, but a fairly standard symphonic film score with added electronic flourishes.

Dubya's Rehab Tour

One Texas legend pays tribute to another. Kinky Friedman on W.'s rehab tour, his poll advantage over Barack Obama, the release of Decision Points, and how history may smile on the Decider.

Full disclosure: I am the only man who has slept under two presidents in the White House-Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The last time I hung out with Bill was in Sydney, just after he'd gotten out of office. I was right in the middle of something when he called and said, "Let's go see [the late great horn player] Maynard Ferguson at the Basement," which we did. I have not seen George and Laura since they left the White House. Like millions of other Americans, I'm starting to miss them, too.

Paul Simon Demonstrates Purity Of The Human Voice For Chris Rock And Tracy Morgan

22 October 2010 1:12 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Chris Rock and Tracy Morgan gave their best Simon and Garfunkel impersonation during Comedy Central's Night of Too Many Stars benefit for autism, but even in comfy turtlenecks (and Garfunkel wig) they couldn't quite hack it. Parsley, sage, raspberry beret?

They had to turn to Auto-Tune for help on the mic to harmonize "Scarborough Fair" before Paul Simon, who'd been playing guitar for them, put an end to the horror. Watch as Simon, "who prefers the purity of the human voice," demonstrates how to use his God-given vocal chords and raps, "So what you wanna do, sheeeit, I got a pocket full of rubbers and my homeboys do too!" in a rousing rendition of Snoop Dog's "Gin and Juice."

The event, which was hosted by Jon Stewart, featured a whole bunch of well-known comedians and Hollywood actors all coming together for a good cause and pulling off some pretty hilarious stunts all in the name of raising a bunch of money.

A couple of the highlights include Chris Rock auctioning off a foul-mouthed phone call to anyone who was scorned by an ex lover. One woman wound up paying $20,000 to have Rock call her ex-boyfriend and go off on him after the guy dumped her via Facebook last year by posting images of himself with another woman. Episode seven: The Suitcase

"It's not my fault you don't have a family or friends or any place to go." Peggy

Since this episode aired in the Us, people have been raving about it being Mad Men's finest. It was a lot to live up to, but The Suitcase – written solely by Matthew Weiner – is a masterpiece. Brand Gives Candid Details Of Moss Romance

20 October 2010 9:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Russell Brand has revealed candid details of his brief romance with supermodel Kate Moss - describing their first kiss and the aftermath of their first sexual encounter.

The British funnyman, who is due to marry pop star Katy Perry at the weekend (23-24Oct10), claims he briefly dated the catwalk beauty back in 2006 after meeting her at a party.

He has previously admitted he was "infatuated" with Moss and was devastated when he "f**ked up" the relationship.

Brand has now opened up about the affair in his latest book, Booky Wook 2: This Time It's Personal, revealing his feelings during their first smooch.

He writes, "My heart pounding, of course, but also my liver and lungs and feet. Paul Simon thinks my vital organs may be a lost African tribe and considers recording a follow-up to Graceland in my colon.

"We kiss, and yes, on one level I'm enjoying the kiss, but my mind is screaming, screeching, body-popping, lambada-ing. Playground fads are revisited: yo-yos, hula hoops, (children's toy) Pogs. 'Kiss properly, stop thinking about Pogs, you idiot.' Ludicrously I say to her, 'Do you want to come back to mine... Kate Moss?' "

He later adds, "(Seeing her in my bed was) like looking into the garden and seeing Vegas Elvis mowing the lawn. Her hair fans over the pillow like a peacock's tail. Kate Moss is indeed in the bed, and for a minute I feel like I've murdered her. 'Oh my God, what have I done?' I get up and back away like a butler on the first day with the Queen, not daring to turn from her for a moment."

And Brand reveals the fling came to an abrupt end after he made an off-hand remark about Moss to a reporter.

He adds, "What no one realised, not Kate nor the red-top tabloid press, was that far from viewing her as a conquest, I was absolutely smitten. When I clumsily ballsed it up by flatly telling journalists... 'I was just larking around,' she wisely withdrew and I had enough sense to stop calling her." »

The bizarre lost world of 1970s cabaret pop

7 October 2010 2:30 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The internet may have closed the gap between past and present, but some bygone eras are still hard to believe. Alexis Petridis revisits the strange, lost world of 1970s cabaret pop

Nothing can really prepare you for the sight of Mrs Mills in full flight on The Morecambe and Wise Show. A huge, terrifying woman in a huge, terrifying floral print dress, she pounds remorselessly at a piano, performing Yes Sir, That's My Baby while aiming an equally remorseless rictus grin at the camera. The footage I'm watching comes from 1973, but it seems to hail from much earlier. It's like something from the height of the Blitz, and, like a lot of things that passed as entertainment during the second world war, it's hard to imagine anyone enjoying it without the incentive to merriment presented by the Luftwaffe raining death from the skies on a nightly basis. But the audience in 1973 audibly love Mrs Mills. »

Where Does Kanye West Rank Among Best 'SNL' Performances Ever?

You can't spit on the host and then show up with your B game. Kanye West knows this, which is why his pair of performances on this weekend's "Saturday Night Live" were among the most arresting in the show's 30-plus year history. You might recall that West took a hard shot at the long-running late night staple on his single "Power," unfavorably name-checking the sketch comedy show with the line "F--- 'SNL' and the whole cast. Tell 'em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass."

But when he showed up to perform the song on Saturday (October 2), Kanye paid the biggest compliment he could to the show: He delivered one of his typically eye-popping visual spectacles, one which will undoubtedly go down in the books. And keep in mind, everybody has played on SNL, from U2 and Abba, to Frank Zappa, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Queen, R.E.M., Public Enemy, »
