Review: Exodus: Gods and Kings

9 March 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

One could argue that Moses is the most significant and influential character from the Old Testament. After all, he led the Hebrew out of slavery and delivered the Ten Commandments. His birth story proved influential, notably to Jerry Siegel a few thousand years later. As embodied by Charlton Heston, there was never a mightier figure which is why it has taken until 2014 before anyone attempted a modern day retelling of his story.

Ridley Scott brought all his filmmaker skills to Exodus: Gods and Kings and the movie is a visually sumptuous. The Middle East provides a nice visual backdrop to this story and the movie deserves to be seen on the large screen. Watching the Digital HD version on my computer screen, courtesy of 20th Century Home Entertainment, shows the limitations of epics on any home screen. There is so much detail and scope that deserve the silver screen so »

20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn’t Know About Superman

5 March 2015 6:09 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

DC Comics

Superman is perhaps the world’s most iconic superhero, and since being created back in 1938, the Man of Steel has gone through some very unique and very strange adventures.

Like almost all DC Comics characters, there have been a lot of different versions of Superman over the years. He made his debut with a borderline villain personality, but that didn’t last long and soon gave way to the classic “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” persona which lasted for decades. He’s since been modernised, and now has a little more of that aggressive and edgy personality from the days of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

A lot of different takes on Superman have been seen on the big and small screen as well, with British actor Henry Cavill the latest to play the character. After Zack Snyder rebooted him in Man Of Steel, Superman will return »

Mike Gold: Our Pulp Roots

4 February 2015 5:00 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

One would think that because the roots of comic book heroes are deeply planted in the forest of pulp heroes, adapting such characters to the four-color medium should be a snap. Despite the superlative efforts of such talents as Garth Ennis, Frank Robbins, Eduardo Barreto, ComicMix’s own Denny O’Neil and a handful of others, this is not the case.

Let us politely say that, overall, pulp heroes have enjoyed a mixed reception. Some good, some bad, some wonderful, some insipid. Sturgeon’s Revelation remains in complete control.

In making the transition, some people resort to measures that put these characters in modern times. Usually, that trick doesn’t work: The Shadow, The Spider et al are creatures of their own times. Sometimes they become something different – in the 1960s Archie Comics turned The Shadow into a routine, and boring, costumed superhero. At least the guy who wrote most of it, »

"Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" - 'Jimmy Olsen' ?

26 January 2015 1:46 PM, PST | SneakPeek | See recent SneakPeek news »

Take another look @ images from the Detroit, Michigan set of director Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel" sequel, "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice", revealing actor Scoot McNairy ("Halt and Catch Fire") filming a dialogue scene, reportedly as 'Jimmy Olsen':

"...Scoot is playing 'Jimmy Olsen', but with a bit of a twist. Jimmy was injured during the battle of 'Zod' vs 'Superman'.

"His legs were pinned under falling building rubble and that caused him to lose the legs.

"He now walks with prosthetic legs that will be realized with CGI FX, hence the green-screen socks. Jimmy doesn't blame Superman for the accident, but grateful to 'Kal-El' for saving the world..."

The comic book origins of Jimmy Olsen began as an unnamed 'office boy' debuted in DC's "Action Comics" #6 (November 1938). That character was also first introduced as 'Jimmy Olsen' in the radio show "The Adventures of Superman", April 15, 1940.

It was 75 Years Ago The Shadow hit the Comic Racks

21 January 2015 3:39 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Seventy-five years ago, The Shadow and Doc Savage made their four-color debut on January 21st, 1940 in Shadow Comics #1, which also featured the first comic book appearances of Nick Carter, Bill Barnes, Frank Merriwell, Iron Munro and a variety of other popular Street & Smith pulp characters.

With the possible exception of Walt Disney’S Comics & Stories, it is unlikely that any other comic magazine ever debuted with as many pre-proven famous characters. The Shadow had already starred in nearly 200 pulp novels and several films, while his weekly radio show had the highest audience ratings in daytime radio. Iron Munro was based on John W. Campbell’s novel The Mightiest Machine, one of the inspirations for Jerry Siegel’s Superman, and featured the exploits of a human born and raised under Jupiter’s high gravity who arrived on Earth to discover that his denser molecular structure gave him invulnerability, super strength and »
