Marvel finally lets superheroes sit in the shadows and brings monsters center stage with their new Disney + special, “Werewolf by Night.” Filmed primarily in black and white, audiences are immersed in a gothic atmosphere for one night that is filled with violence and vengeance. Director Michael Giacchino channels his adolescent love of “Creature Double Feature” and “The Twilight Zone” by partnering with writers Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron to create one of the most intriguing Marvel projects to date.
Ulysses Bloodstone, a renowned monster hunter, has passed and his widow has summoned the best monster hunters from all over to pay their respects. Among them is Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal) and Ulysses’ estranged daughter Elsa (Laura Donnelly). The animated corpse of Ulysses reveals the crew is actually there to fight for the role of the ruby-red bloodstone’s new owner, a birthright that Elsa has come back to claim.

“Hawkeye” marked Eric Steelberg‘s first venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the cinematographer couldn’t have asked for a better show to make his MCU debut. “I loved that they were doing [a Hawkeye show]. I loved that they were kind of making fun of him in the show for being a forgotten character. ‘A branding issue.’ Such a funny line,” Steelberg tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “There were lots of fun opportunities on this project that I never really had an opportunity to do — scale and scope and visual effects but even the storytelling was really interesting, focusing a character for ability and sharing their ability is something I don’t think I’ve explored in other kinds of films I’d done. I had just come off of ‘Ghostbusters’ right before I did ‘Hawkeye,’ so a very different kind of project, different kind of VFX,...

Despite being one of the Og six Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is usually forgotten at worst and overlooked at best. That’s been the long-running joke in the MCU and Irl, so it’s not surprising that he never had his own theme until Disney+’s “Hawkeye” came along. And composers Christophe Beck, an Emmy winner who was nominated last year for “WandaVision,” and Michael Paraskevas jumped at the opportunity to give the archer some signature music at long last.
“It’s an amazing feeling, especially with a franchise as storied and as vast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The opportunity to set the tone for a character is one that I relish,” Beck tells Gold Derby in an interview with Paraskevas (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I loved doing it for Wanda and Vision in ‘WandaVision,’ and especially here because, as you mentioned,...

“Hawkeye” is a Christmas show and not just any Christmas show but one set in New York City, which became an additional character on the Disney+ series. “It actually was really fun to delve into the idea of Christmas, which connotates that feeling of wanting to go home, and the whole show being set in New York, it really kind of became a love letter to New York City,” production designer Maya Shimoguchi tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above).
While production was mostly in Atlanta, “Hawkeye” filmed exteriors in New York City in December 2020 to capture the authenticity of Christmastime in the Big Apple. That was also vital for the finale’s massive action sequence that takes place on the Rockefeller Center ice rink. The sequence starts with Clint (Jeremy Renner) falling into the famous ginormous Christmas tree before the tree is shot down by Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) onto the ice,...
