The Great Gatsby, Beware Of Mr Baker, Fast And Furious 6: this week's new films

The Great Gatsby | Beware Of Mr Baker | Fast And Furious 6 | The Stoker | The Liability | Rangeelay

The Great Gatsby (12A)

(Baz Luhrmann, 2013, Us) Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki. 143 mins

No one's disputing that Luhrmann can put on a show, but can he tell a story? In a way, F Scott Fitzgerald's 1920s parable is a perfect fit: a study of surfaces and seduction and the hollowness of the wealthy. The hedonism and vulgarity are ravishing to behold and the hand-tinted-photo aesthetic is gorgeous. When the fireworks die down, however, that artificiality works against the romantic tragedy, and the characters are too flat to really stir any great emotions. Maybe that's the point.

Beware Of Mr Baker (15)

(Jay Bulger, 2012, Us) 92 mins

When it comes to great rock bio-doc material, Ginger Baker doesn't disappoint on any front: prodigious talent, eventful career (Cream, Blind Faith and Fela Kuti »

Star Trek Into Darkness, Mud, A Hijacking: this week's new films

10 May 2013 10:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Star Trek Into Darkness | Mud | A Hijacking | The Reluctant Fundamentalist | Our Children | Deadfall | Vehicle 19 | Village At The End Of The World | Journey To Italy

Star Trek Into Darkness (12A)

(Jj Abrams, 2013, Us) Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. 132 mins

Those cinemagoers won over by Abrams's first Star Trek movie (even if they can barely remember it now) won't be disappointed with this finely tuned follow-up, which deftly balances action crises, sci-fi repartee and the ongoing Kirk/Spock bromance, but adds enough surprises to keep things interesting, largely by way of Cumberbatch's shifty supervillain.

Mud (12A)

(Jeff Nichols, 2012, Us) Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Reese Witherspoon. 130 mins

Another distinctive, beguiling southern parable from Nichols, this time tracking the friendship between two boys and the mysterious fugitive they find down by the river. It's like a mix of Stand By Me, Night Of The Hunter and Terrence Malick. »

16 April 2013 6:19 AM, PDT | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

New Delhi, April 16: Varun Dhawan's dancing prowess was on full display in his Bollywood debut "Student Of The Year". When he was asked to groove impromptu for an ad recently, he was all for it.

The trained dancer had to do a jig for the 'Tibetan yak dance' ad for aerated drink brand Coke. He is seen dancing with the 'yak' and offering a bottle of Coke to it.

If sources are to be believed, the ad makers insisted on not having any choreographers on set. When Varun learned that he just has to be himself and dance unrehearsed to make it look natural, he was all for it.

We fared a tad better with the press room on the big day of the Toifa Awards Ceremony, but the starlets and heroes did need the whole day to shop and get all glammed up. Yet amidst the chaos of sight-seeing and getting ready, Kulraj Randhawa, Zarine Khan, and Sujoy Ghosh took some time out of their schedule for a few interviews. They told us about their upcoming projects, their favourite sight-seeing destinations, and their love of movies.

Mumbai, April 4: Director Tigmanshu Dhulia recently stated that the sequel “Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns” has not been made keeping in mind the success ratio of the first part. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Movie Review

8 March 2013 5:15 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Although I liked Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster moderately I felt it could have been better. In the sequel, Tigmanshu Dhulia fixes all that needed to be fixed the first time round and comes out with a cracker of a film which is bigger and better, much better.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns starts where the prequel ended. Saheb/Aditya (Jimmy Sheirgill) is crippled but does not let his disability stop him from ruling his ‘praja’ with an iron hand. Biwi/Madhavi (Mahie Gill) is as alcoholic and brazen as ever, strongly resenting still being a pawn of Saheb’s despite becoming the Mla of her district. Enter the Gangster/Indrajit (Irrfan Khan) who is an ex-royal and dreams of earning back the lost glory which was snatched away a few generations ago by Saheb’s family. That Saheb has set his heart on marrying princess Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan), Indrajit’s lady love, »

Sbagr Review

Film: "Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns"; Cast: Irrfan, Mahie Gill, Jimmy Sheirgill, Soha Ali Khan and Raj Babbar; Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia; Rating: **** - vivid, vibrant, savagely tragic with gutsy performances.

In what could be regarded as a sequence of subliminal comic relief, a little-known actor Rajeev Gupta gives this film, suffused in powerhouse performances, its best performance as a slimy politician caught watching porn on his laptop in his office by a goon masquerading as a journalist.

The sequence is hilarious and at the same time sobering. While the self-important buffoonish politician's predicament raises laughter,. »

Jimmy Shergill speaks about sex scene in 'Saheb, Biwi aur Gangster Returns'

4 March 2013 9:32 AM, PST | Bollywoodmantra.com | See recent Bollywood Mantra news »

Jimmy Shergil has truly proved his mettle and talent in his recent movie, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns. When it was announced that of all actors, Jimmy Shergill will do the role of the Saheb, people were quite apprehensive, as they are always used to seeing Jimmy in mild and calm roles. Except for his role in A Wednesday, he has always done a character which is soft and calm. Saheb, in the film, is quite opposite to the roles that Jimmy has been doing. It is character for whom killing mercilessly is an everyday business and he is one who knows no setbacks in life. His life is full of gunshots. However, all the people who doubt »
