‘The View’ Turns 20: ABC to Re-Air First Episode With Barbara Walters (Exclusive)

7 August 2017 7:55 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Two decades ago ago, Barbara Walters had a groundbreaking idea. She wanted to launch a talk show where she could stop by, on top of her full-time job on “20/20,” to spar with a multi-generational panel of women about the headlines of the day. After a casting-call at the Essex Hotel, she discovered the four ladies — Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Joy Behar and Debbie Matenopoulos — who’d join her as the co-hosts of “The View,” which premiered on Aug. 11, 1997.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of a show that changed the rules of daytime TV, ABC is re-airing the first episode of “The View” this Friday, Variety has learned. The show was not a success in its immediate days, which Walters told me prior to her retirement in 2014.

At the time, politics was a taboo subject in daytime. And serious news anchors weren’t allowed to express their opinions. But under the watch of Walters and executive producer Bill Geddie »

NBC Renews John Lithgow’s Comedy ‘Trail & Error’ for Season 2

20 May 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBC has renewed freshman comedy “Trial & Error” for a 10-episode second season, Variety has learned.

Though the show, which stars John Lithgow, has not been a ratings hit, insiders say it has been a favorite of NBC boss Bob Greenblatt.

The comedy aired twice per week during its spring run, bringing in 3.9 million viewers overall — not as strong as NBC’s other comedies “The Good Place” or “Superstore,” both of which were renewed early.

In Variety‘s review of the series, critic Sonia Soraiya praised the series, comparing its elements to those of “Parks and Recreation,” “30 Rock,” and “The Office.” She wrote, “The show is a lighthearted, zany spoof of shows like ‘The Jinx’ and ‘Making a Murderer,’ those true-crime documentary series that take a viewer into the real-time investigation of a convoluted case.”

‘The Staircase’ Documentary Is in the DNA of NBC’s New Comedy Whodunnit ’Trial & Error’

14 March 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Before “Making the Murderer,” “The Jinx,” and even “Serial,” the documentary “The Staircase” illustrated a story of death and desire that was riveting for all of its unexpected turns.

The Staircase” took the true crime world by storm, and fans of the series were divided over whether or not mystery novelist Michael Peterson had killed his wife – or if she had died from falling down the stairs, as he claimed. The series was so popular that it inspired NBC’s new comedy “Trial & Error,” a true-crime mockumentary that stars John Lithgow as the accused in a murder case.

TV Review: ‘Trial & Error’ on NBC, Starring John Lithgow

8 March 2017 8:30 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Trial & Error” should not be as funny as it is. The sitcom is kind of a tea-cozy murder mystery with a bemused affection for its rural setting that is reminiscent of NBC’s departed “Parks and Recreation,” full of punchy one-liners like “30 Rock,” and in a mockumentary format like “The Office.” The new NBC comedy seems to have been carefully constructed from elements of great Must-See-TVs of yore, and that’s a process that doesn’t always yield great programming. Even the idiosyncratic ensemble that gathers around the case also feels like an homage to “Parks and Recreation” — there’s the too-cool young brunette, the “citified” lawyer from “elsewhere,” a black woman with the funniest lines on the whole show, and a dedicated public servant determined to make her mark. And to top it all off, “Trial & Error” is headlined by John Lithgow, who won three Emmys as the lead of NBC’s long-running “3rd Rock from »

The Short List of Famous People Who Think the Earth Is Flat (Yes, Really)

20 February 2017 11:42 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

NBA star Kyrie Irving made headlines last week when he revealed that he believes that the world was flat, and surprisingly he’s not the only famous person who doesn’t believe the globe is … well, a globe.

Over NBA All-Star weekend, Irving’s comments became a hot topic of conversation, and even resulted in some gentle ribbing from fellow Cleveland Cavaliers player LeBron James. While Irving later said he found the reaction to his flat-Earth theory “hilarious,” he also said that his opinion on the shape of the world we live in shouldn’t really matter to other people. »
