Is it the sherry talking, or is Matt Smith looking more and more like a stretch version of Gordon Ramsay? Interestingly, for lovers of showbiz Christmas cracker trivia, both were promising young footballers forced by injury to become international TV stars. Anyway he was back (Matt, not Gordon) for yesterday's Doctor Who special, a beautifully inventive reworking of A Christmas Carol featuring Michael Gambon as Kazran Sardick, the heartless kingpin of a Dickensian otherworld refusing to help a doomed huge spaceliner full of passengers stranded in one of his clouds. The Thick Of It star to portray Balthasar in four-part drama for BBC1 this Christmas

The Thick Of It's Peter Capaldi will star as one of the three wise men in Tony Jordan's The Nativity on BBC1 this Christmas in a cast that also includes Cranford's Andrew Buchan and rising star Tatiana Maslany.

Capaldi, who plays the expletive-spewing spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the Thick Of It, will play Balthasar in the four-part drama, with Buchan, who also starred in ITV1's The Fixer, as Joseph.

Maslany, who won a special jury prize for her role in A Grown Up Movie Star at this year's Sundance Film Festival, will play Mary.

The cast will also include Art Malik, John Lynch, Jack Shepherd and Neil Dudgeon.

The Nativity has been a long-standing project for Jordan (Life on Mars, Hustle, EastEnders), who began researching it five years ago.
