Meghan McCain Looks For Fight, Finds Many, Now Wants Sympathy?

25 May 2012 1:18 PM, PDT | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

MSNBC contributor Meghan McCain appeared on Rev. Al Sharpton’s program on Thursday where she said that the Republican party, of which she is a member, treats her like a “freak” and a “mutant” simply because she holds some moderate views on divisive social issues. McCain has often made herself out to be a victim of close-minded conservatives who simply reject her for her less-than dogmatic policy preferences. But McCain forgets that she has made a career of being a contrarian – her vehicle for getting air time consists entirely of starting fights with Republican pundits and lawmakers. »

Al Sharpton Explains His Trayvon Martin Coverage On MSNBC’s PoliticsNation

23 May 2012 1:57 PM, PDT | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

Despite our earlier report to the contrary, Rev. Al Sharpton actually has mentioned the Trayvon Martin case since the emergence of new evidence in the case against accused murderer George Zimmerman. He did it Monday night, and the segment he devoted to it goes a long way toward explaining why the progressive media's coverage of this case has waned for the moment. »

Run-d.M.C. Member's Awesome McA Memory

9 May 2012 9:29 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

At last night's gala benefit for The Moth, a non-profit dedicated to the art of storytelling, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels shared a few memories of Adam "McA" Yauch with The Huffington Post.

In the early 80s, McDaniels' group, Run-d.M.C., and Yauch's group, the Beastie Boys, were label-mates on Def Jam Records -- and tag-team partners locked in combat with music's status quo. Today, both groups are safely ensconced in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but it wasn't always obvious that they were destined for immortality.

"You know, it was early, so people thought Run Dmc's a fad, Beasties is a fad, you know, all of this is a fad," McDaniels said. "Run-d.M.C., we crossed over with the rock -- but then it was Run-d.M.C. and the Beastie Boys that took it to venues. We started playing Madison Square Garden, L.A. »

Al Sharpton Reenacts The Gop’s Endorsements Of Mitt Romney…Using Child Actors

9 May 2012 8:53 AM, PDT | Mediaite - TV | See recent Mediaite - TV news »

Yesterday on PoliticsNation, Rev. Al Sharpton argued that the awkward and hesitant way the former Gop rivals have begun endorsing Mitt Romney reminds him of schoolyard children. He imagined the turnarounds, which some have seen as "creepy," to be like little kids forced to make up and play nice by their parents. So, as anyone would, he hired a bunch of child actors to give dramatic interpretations. »

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton was a guest on Jimmy Fallon's chat show last night. Sharpton has been speaking out on the Trayvon Martin and has pleaded with supporters to remain peaceful and let them work the justice system to find resolution to the February shooting of the teenager in Sanford. At a press conference in downtown Washington a few days ago, Sharpton said "Trayvon's name must not be tarnished" by violence -- in either words or deeds -- in response to the killing of Martin by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman. "We are not in the business of revenge. We are in the business of justice," said Sharpton, speaking at a convention for the National Action Network, his »

Tribeca Review: 'Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie' Is The Sleaze-Filled Celebration He Deserves

21 April 2012 12:44 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A charlatan, a ringmaster, and, at his most charitable, an irresponsible pig. This was Morton Downey Jr., and “Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie” is probably the film he deserves. Destined to provoke knowing nods from his fanbase, and predictable tsk-tsks from his detractors, 'Evocateur' examines the seeds that were planted in the late eighties when “The Morton Downey Jr. Show” hit the airwaves to a cacophony of pop culture noise.

From the directing team of Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller and Jeremy Newberger, 'Evocateur' highlights Downey’s immodest beginnings, as the liberal son to a crooning father and a mistreated starlet wife. Downey tried music, and even dabbled in poetry before finding his calling, as a hard-right entertainer taking on the guise of a “voice of the people.” 'Evocateur' takes great pains to illustrate that Downey wasn’t the first to welcome on-air confrontation with obnoxious braggadocio, nor is he the last, »

Al Sharpton Analyzes New George Zimmerman Video: Not A Man Beaten ‘Within An Inch Of His Life’

The new George Zimmerman surveillance video, released by the Sanford Police Department, is the latest in the ongoing release of information in the Trayvon Martin case. Upon seeing the footage, many said Zimmerman looked unharmed, contrary to claims on the police report. On his show Thursday evening, Rev. Al Sharpton argued just that. It's clear from the video, he said, that Zimmerman wasn't hurt — and certainly not hurt enough to shoot in self-defense. »

Last weekend, CNN's Howard Kurtz took issue with the dual role Rev. Al Sharpton is playing in the Trayvon Martin case. While he is an MSNBC anchor, Sharpton has also been an activist who "has claimed a starring role in the Trayvon Martin case." On a Reliable Sources segment, and then in a Daily Beast piece, Kurtz said even commentators have rules to abide by, but Sharpton has "obliterated" any such boundaries. In a recent Associated Press piece that tackled the same topic, MSNBC head Phil Griffin openly stated, "We didn't hire Al to become a neutered kind of news presenter." »

Sinead O'Connor pens open letter to family of shot teen Trayvon Martin

Sinead O'Connor has penned an open letter to the family of slain American teenager Trayvon Martin. The unarmed 17-year-old African-American was shot to death by Florida neighbourhood watchman George Zimmerman in late February. There have been allegations that race played a role in the killing, but Zimmerman has claimed he was simply defending himself. Zimmerman has thus far not been charged in relation to Martin's death. Diddy, Spike Lee, Reverend Al Sharpton and Will Ferrell have all called for Zimmerman's arrest in the past few weeks and now O'Connor has weighed in with a post on her website. She wrote: "I would like to extend my very deepest sympathies to the family and other loved ones of murdered teenager [Trayvon] Martin. "I am very sad today (and am certain the whole of Ireland is) to learn of poor [Trayvon's] (more) »

New York — Aretha Franklin has a lot more than her 70th birthday to celebrate: She's reuniting with one of her musical mentors, Clive Davis, for a new album.

In an interview at her swanky birthday party on Saturday, Franklin said she and Davis, who helped engineer her comeback in the 1980s, would be working on new music.

"I have re-signed with Clive Davis, so I'm recording with Clive again," said Franklin of the music mogul, who is associated with Sony Music Entertainment.

Franklin said that after Davis' birthday next month, "we're going to sit together and decide what it is we're going to record."

Davis sat next to Franklin for most of the night at the soiree at the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel, which included a sit-down dinner, a dance performance and a mini-concert that featured rising jazz pianist Kris Bowers.

Other guests included Diane Sawyer, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Willie Wilkerson, »

Celebrities React To Trayvon Martin's Killing

Many celebrities -- from director Spike Lee to "View" co-host Sherri Shepherd and rapper Chuck D -- have used social media to speak out against the murder of Trayvon Martin, a Florida teenager whose killing has become a national news story.

Basketball star LeBron James recently tweeted a picture of the Miami Heat wearing hoodies, with their heads bowed in support of Martin.

Meanwhile, Reverend Al Sharpton recently spoke at a rally for Martin in the teen's hometown. At the protest, Sharpton, joined by Martin's parents, adressed the upset crowd. "Trayvon could have been any one of our sons," he said. "Trayvon could have been any one of us."

Sharpton said the following in a Huffington Post editorial:

The race/ethnicity of Zimmerman or any citizen in this type of scenario doesn't matter, because at the end of the day, it is the race of the victim -- Trayvon -- that does matter. »
