Toronto Film Review: ‘The Hungry’

Toronto Film Review: ‘The Hungry’
William Shakespeare’s first tragedy, “Titus Andronicus,” has never been among his most revered plays, but there’s a primal appeal to the raw, blood-caked nastiness of its plotting and the themes of revenge and political treachery that would resurface in later works. Julie Taymor’s conceptually audacious 1999 film version collapsed multiple eras into a Grand Guignol epic about the savagery at the heart of human history, but made few changes to the text. For “The Hungry,” writer-director Bornila Chatterjee tosses out the dialogue and updates the story to an estate in modern-day India, where a marriage of convenience around a business partnership turns into an all-consuming internecine battle. Yet the conceit is narrow and banal, losing not only the poetry of Shakespeare’s work but its populist charge, too, which is weakened by yawning gaps in the storytelling. Ultra-violence and incoherence stand to make a fraught marriage in worldwide markets.

Locarno Film Review: ‘Tomorrow and Thereafter’

Locarno Film Review: ‘Tomorrow and Thereafter’
Stories for kids are allowed a certain leeway when it comes to background and believability: No one really gets hung up on not knowing why Little Red Riding Hood’s granny lives in the middle of the woods, or even why Red doesn’t have a real name. In film, it’s pretty much the same, yet when it’s a movie meant for adults about a child, and the adult audience is supposed to be guided into reconnecting with the fears and loneliness of their nine-year-old selves, then more of the “whys” are needed.

With “Tomorrow and Thereafter,” actress-director Noémi Lvovsky expects viewers to be so taken with her young protagonist and her unbalanced mother that they’ll treat the whole thing as a precious fairy tale of peril and liberation, yet there’s something so deeply personal here (or perhaps so deeply French) that it’s difficult to imagine just who it’s made for

Buyers expressed optimism over a handful of titles amid London security concerns.

Despite at least one distributor cancelling their trip to the 13th edition of The Film London London Screenings (19-22 June) due to the recent UK terror attacks, organisers and buyers expressed optimism about this year’s lineup.

Around 150 delegates (roughly 125 international buyers and a number of UK distributors, festival directors and programmers) attended the event, which showcases completed films and works in progress.

Alongside the usual smattering of European buyers, there were several Us distributors in attendance, among then Magnolia, The Weinstein Company, AMC, Film Movement and Screen Media. Buyers also came from as far afield as Taiwan and Brazil.

“It was a concern of mine whether the recent events (in London) would have an
