2012 Indie Spirit Award Nominations Led by 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'Silver Linings Playbook'

27 November 2012 12:00 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Nominations for the 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced today and were led by Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook with five nominations each followed closely by fellow Best Feature nominees Beasts of the Southern Wild and Keep the Lights On as well as Ava DuVernay's Middle of Nowhere, each with four nominations. Richard Linklater's Bernie was the fifth Best Feature nominee while Middle of Nowhere found its four nominations largely in the acting categories with Emayatzy Corinealdi, David Oyelowo and Lorraine Toussant all being nominated and the fourth for the John Cassavetes Award, which goes to the "best" film made for under $500,000. Looking over the list of nominees I can't help but shrug at the screenplay nomination for Ruby Sparks (a film I loathed), but it's nice to see some First Time Feature love for Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed and Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower, »

2013 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight

He outfitted the festival with his debut film Slacker (’91 Sundance), and a pair of films nearly a decade later (Waking Life and Tape) and while we imagine WB might be hesitant to let the cat out of the bag early, but Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight does come across as the perfect fit for the fest – and it helps that not only the filmmaker but stars/co-writers Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are chummy with the lieu (Delpy’s sequel 2 Days in New York was shown there earlier in the year.

Gist: Beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight (Before Sunset).

Production Co./Producers: Linklater’s Detour Filmproduction, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos and Sara Woodhatch of Faliro House and Jacob Pechenik of Venture 4th, together with Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer of Castle Rock Entertainment.

Here’s another casting story of today: Hugh Grant, known for his male lead roles in many romantic comedies, will return to the romantic comedy genre in his fourth rom-com collaboration with Marc Lawrence.

The untitled picture, also written by Lawrence will begin shooting in New York this April.

In this Hollywood comedy, set

in 1998, Ray Michaels (Grant) was on top of the world — a witty, sexy, Englishman in Hollywood who had just won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Fifteen years later, he’s creatively washed up, divorced, and broke. With no other options, he takes a job teaching screenwriting at a small college on the East Coast. Although the idea of teaching is less than thrilling, he hopes to make some easy money and enjoy the favors of impressionable young co-eds. What he doesn’t expect to find is romance with a single mom who’s gone back to school. »
