BBC Commissions TV Drama ‘Diana & I’ on Death of Princess Diana

18 May 2017 8:24 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

BBC Two has commissioned one-off feature-length drama “Diana & I,” from BAFTA-winning writer Jeremy Brock and Oscar-nominated director Peter Cattaneo. The fictional TV drama will explore the impact of the death of Princess Diana from the point of view of four ordinary people, whose stories intersect, during the week following her death in 1997.

“I wanted to explore the lives of four ordinary people and how they internalized their memories of Diana in the aftermath of her death,” said Brock. “The week following her fatal car crash was a week like no other before. It catapulted many of us into emotional states we rarely visit, leaving us open to new insights and new experiences.”

Tamsin Greig, Nico Mirallegro, Kiran Sonia Sawar and Laurie Davidson are set to star. Gemma Jones, Neil Morrissey, Tuppence Middleton, Charlotte Hope, Asif Khan, Kingsley Ben-Adir, John Gordon Sinclair and Roshan Seth will also feature.

Brock said the film would be a “celebration of what »

‘City of Tiny Lights’ Review

10 April 2017 6:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Riz Ahmed, Billie Piper, James Floyd, Roshan Seth, Cush Jumbo | Written by Patrick Neate | Directed by Pete Travis

I could watch Riz Ahmed in almost anything, but there are limits, tested here by this deeply mediocre British mystery thriller. Adapted by Patrick Neate from his 2005 novel, City of Tiny Lights is helmed by Pete Travis, who in 2012 nearly rescued Judge Dredd from comic book movie hell. But while Travis transposes some of Dredd’s style, he cannot bring its boldness, humour or efficiency.

Ahmed plays Tommy Akhtar, a “snoop” who is so underground that even his job description is unclear. Basically, he’s a private detective. One day he’s visited by a working woman named Melody (Cush Jumbo). Her flatmate is missing. Tommy investigates and finds the body of a Pakistani businessman. It’s a discovery that will bring him into close contact with two blasts from his »

City of Tiny Lights, 2016.

Directed by Pete Travis.

Starring Riz Ahmed, Billie Piper, James Floyd, Cush Jumbo, Roshan Seth, and Antonio Aakeel.

Synopsis:

Meet Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed), cricket fan, devoted son to an ailing father and deadbeat private eye. He’s got an office above a cab firm, a taste for cigarettes and bourbon, and a finely tuned moral compass that he keeps hidden behind a sharp cynicism. When Tommy walks into his office one morning to find high-class prostitute Melody seeking his help, he’s launched into a story that plays as an utterly original modern noir.

To declare Riz Ahmed as having “a bit of a moment” would be an understatement. To stumble on a piece of media without him making an appearance takes certain effort. He’s seemingly in everything, from bit part roles – maybe glorified cameos – in Girls and Netflix’ baffling The Oa to his »

First Trailer for UK Thriller 'City of Tiny Lights' Featuring Riz Ahmed

19 January 2017 12:37 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"People call me a snoop. They call me a lot worse. Broken marriages, missing kids. Nothing major, just the sacred and profane." An official UK trailer has arrived online for an indie film titled City of Tiny Lights, a "Scorsese-like" crime thriller about a private eye in London. Riz Ahmed (seen in Rogue One and Jason Bourne) plays Tommy Akhtar, who takes on a seemingly straight-forward missing person's case only to get pulled deeper into the underbelly of modern London. The full cast includes Billie Piper, Cush Jumbo, Hannah Rae, Roshan Seth, and James Floyd. This is from the same director of Dredd, a movie which I was very fond of. The film played at the Toronto and London Film Festivals last year, and it looks pretty damn good. Plus, Riz Ahmed is awesome and it's great to see him in a strong lead role. Take a look below. ‘City of Tiny Lights’ Trailer: Riz Ahmed Searches For Missing Girl in Pete Travis’ Modern Noir

19 January 2017 12:19 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Riz Ahmed first made waves in Michael Winterbottom’s “The Road to Guantanamo,” but his Hollywood claim to fame was in last year’s HBO crime drama “The Night Of,” which earned him a Golden Globe and SAG nomination.

Now, after starring in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Ahmed is returning to theaters in “City of Tiny Lights,” directed by “Dredd” helmer Pete Travis. Set in West London, the story is co-written by Patrick Neate and is based on his novel of the same name. Described as a “unique portrait of contemporary London as a teeming multicultural metropolis where nothing is as it seems,” it follows the actor as Tommy Akhtar, a London detective who goes searching for a missing girl after a high-class prostitute seeks his help.

The modern noir also co-stars “Penny Dreadful” actress Billie Piper as Shelley, Tommy’s long-lost love, as well as Cush Jumbo and Roshan Seth. »

Riz Ahmed Digs Up Secrets in First Trailer for ‘City of Tiny Lights’

19 January 2017 7:20 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After a major last year with The Night Of, Rogue One, and Jason Bourne this year, Riz Ahmed also brought a few films to Tiff. One of them was City of Tiny Lights, which comes from Dredd‘s Pete Travis, and follows Ahmed as a London detective who gets entangled in a missing-girl case as a complex web of lies bubble up. With the film picked up for U.K. distribution this April, the first neon-soaked trailer has now arrived.

We said in our review, “Ahmed shines in the lead role: something this charismatic actor has deserved since the wonderfully funny Four Lions. He embodies the hard-edged street-wise detective well without erasing the sense of empathy his characters always possess. We see the struggle endured between those worlds and know how Shelley’s leaving widened the void in his soul that Stuart’s death tore open. People like him from Mrs. »
