Shun Li and the Poet Review

18 June 2013 3:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

In merely a coincidental set of circumstances, Andrea Segre’s Shun Li and the Poet arrives in UK cinemas on the very same day as Like Someone in Love – as two completely separate films that both focus in on the tale of an oriental woman, building the unlikeliest of platonic relationships with a man twice her age. However unlike the Abbas Kiarostami production, Shun Li and the Poet is a somewhat blander, more conventional depiction of such a story – though matches the aforementioned title in sincerity and sentiment.

Set on a small island in the Veneto lagoon, we follow Shun Li (Tao Zhao), a thirty something immigrant from China who takes a job at a local bar to raise enough funds to ensure her 8-year-old son can soon join her. Feeling isolated in this foreign land, she befriends the ageing fisherman Bepi (Rade Serbedzija), who, although having lived in Italy for 30 years, »

Teaser Poster Hits For Kellan Lutz & Renny Harlin’s ‘Hercules 3D’

25 May 2013 5:23 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The days when director Renny Harlin was the go-to-guy for big-screen action and thrills are sadly long gone. The man who gave us enjoyable madness of Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight has saw his stock plummet following the expensive disaster Cutthroat Island, which in all honesty wasn’t all that bad despite notoriously bankrupting Carolco Pictures. Lately, Harlin’s stepped into the world of TV. Directing episodes of Burn Notice, White Collar and the upcoming Graceland but he’ll be hoping to kick-start his cinematic career with one of two Hercules projects on the horizon.

Hoping to beat Brett Ratner and Dwayne Johnston’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars to the punch, Harlin’s Hercules 3D will star Twilight hunk Kellan Lutz as the mythic and heroic Greek god. The film is currently shooting with a supporting cast that includes Scott AdkinsJohnathon SchaechLiam McIntyreRade Serbedzija, »

Red Widow: Cancelled by ABC, No Season Two

10 May 2013 11:10 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Marta Walraven (Radha Mitchell) won't have to worry about working for the mob for a second season. Red Widow has been cancelled by ABC after one season and eight episodes.

Red Widow follows a San Francisco housewife and mother who finds herself forced to continue her late husband's work in organized crime for the sake of her family. The series' cast includes Radha Mitchell, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Goss, Sterling Beaumon, Suleka Mathew, Erin Moriarty, Jaime Ray Newman, Jakob Salvati, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Rade Serbedzija, and Goran Visnjic.

The show's ratings were unfortunately very low right from the start -- debuting to a 1.5 demo rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.13 million total viewers.

The numbers got worse for later episodes and Red Widow fell as low as a 0.7 rating and 3.47 million viewers -- much too low »

Red Widow: To Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Two?

6 May 2013 12:24 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Tonight marks the season finale of Red Widow since ABC ordered just eight episodes of the series. Is this the end? Will the drama be back for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?

For those unfamiliar with the show, Red Widow revolves around a San Francisco housewife and mother who finds herself forced to continue her husband's work in organized crime after his death. The large cast includes Radha Mitchell, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Goss, Sterling Beaumon, Suleka Mathew, Erin Moriarty, Jaime Ray Newman, Jakob Salvati, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Rade Serbedzija, and Goran Visnjic.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a second season renewal for Red Widow. The show's ratings were poor at the start -- debuting to a 1.5 demo rating with 7.13 million viewers -- and have gotten a lot worse as the weeks have worn on. »

'Red Widow' Season 1 finale: Renew or cancel ABC's mob drama?

5 May 2013 9:08 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Red Widow" Season 1 came to an end on ABC tonight and given the show's low ratings it could be the end of the series for good.

Season to date, "Red Widow" has been averaging 5.15 million viewers and a 1.1 in the key 18-49 demo. But the numbers have been plummeting week-to-week, last week reaching a series low of 3.47 million viewers and 0.7 in the demo.

In the climactic installment, Marta (Radha Mitchell) discovered that her own father (Rade Serbedzija) was involved in the murder of her husband and bodyguard Luther (Luke Goss) lost his life. And in the cliffhanger ending Marta's daughter Natalie (Erin Moriarty) pulled a gun on Nicholae Schiller (Goran Visnjic) to finish the business of avenging her father's death (without knowing she has the wrong man).

Was that good enough to make you curious to see what happens next, or should ABC simply cut their losses on the low-rated drama? »

Did Red Widow cause you to shed tears of joy… or something else?

Red Widow: Is the New ABC Series Worth Watching?

ABC's Zero Hour has already been cancelled due to terrible ratings. Will the network have better luck with Red Widow, their newest drama? Is it even worth watching?

Red Widow revolves around a suburban housewife and mom whose husband is killed after he steals from the Russian mob. The mobsters don't consider the debt paid however and the widow must now do their bidding -- while she tries to protect her children and dodge the FBI.

The show's cast includes Radha Mitchell, Clifton Collins Jr., Luke Goss, Sterling Beaumon, Suleka Mathew, Erin Moriarty, Jaime Ray Newman, Jakob Salvati, Lee Tergesen, Wil Traval, Rade Serbedzija, and Goran Visnjic.

'Red Widow' review: ABC's answer to 'Breaking Bad'? Not quite

3 March 2013 12:00 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

ABC's new drama "Red Widow" attempts to blend cable style storytelling with the network's brand of female-driven serials: Think "Breaking Bad" meets "Desperate Housewives," except with just one housewife.

It's an ambitious goal, based -- inevitably -- on a preexisting idea. In this case, that's the Dutch series "Penoza," which serves as inspiration for executive producer Melissa Rosenberg ("Dexter," "The Twilight Saga") as she explores the story of Marin County mom Marta Walraven (Radha Mitchell) who is drawn into the world of the Russian mafia after the death of her husband (guest star Anson Mount of AMC's "Hell on Wheels").

The intriguing concept gets an awfully prolonged set-up in the first of two hours premiering on ABC Sunday night. The opening stretch intends to establish Marta's marriage, the couple's three children, various family relationships and her husband's life of crime. He makes his living exporting marijuana, but a recent bad »

'Red Widow': ABC's new drama offers a criminal take on motherhood

3 March 2013 11:00 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The Gospel of Matthew quotes Jesus as saying, in part, "All those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword."

But sometimes it's not so much a matter of taking up the sword as being taken up by it, in the form of circumstances beyond your control.

On Sunday, March 3, ABC premieres "Red Widow," executive produced and written by Melissa Rosenberg ("Dexter," the "Twilight" films) and adapted from the Dutch series "Penoza."

Radha Mitchell stars as Marta Walraven, a stay-at-home mom in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. She loves her three children, her husband, Evan (Anson Mount, "Hell on Wheels"), and the life he has built for them. But there's a rub -- this domestic bliss comes from what Marta believes is Evan's illegal trade in marijuana.

It's not a completely unfamiliar situation for Marta, since she is the daughter of Russian gangster Andrei Petrov (Rade Serbedzija). She and her sister, »

TV Review: Great Cast But No Reason to Care About ‘Red Widow’

3 March 2013 8:32 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – While the broadcast networks midseason continues to set records for overall incompetence and ABC’s “Zero Hour” appears to be the latest casualty (as it was pulled from this week schedule in advance of a likely cancellation), the newest attempt to revive flatlining numbers comes in the form of ABC’s “Red Widow.” This new thriller has a great cast and strong production values but no reason to expect that it will turn this season around.

Television Rating: 2.5/5.0

Marta Walraven (an effective Radha Mitchell) has a nice house, three kids, and a happy life that is shattered when her husband Evan is murdered in their driveway. It turns out that Evan made his fortune in somewhat unscrupulous ways that had just gotten significantly more deadly with the theft of a shipment of drugs from notorious crime lord Christian Schiller (Goran Visjnic). Taken 2 Blu-Ray Review

4 February 2013 8:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The first Taken was released ahead of the Us in the UK and opened to pretty bad reviews and subsequently disappeared from cinemas pretty quickly.

Then about four months later it opened in the Us in a cut form and was a massive box office success. This release coincided with the UK DVD release so people kind of re-appraised the film and it became a minor success on DVD over here. The sequel released last autumn was an equally massive success but the critical disappointment baffles me. People seemed to be genuinely disappointed that the sequel was not as ‘good’ as the first film like the first was some kind of masterpiece.

At best the first Taken film was a diverting piece of violence for a Friday night and not the pinnacle of modern action cinema it seems to be held up as. Let us not forget that Taken and »

Taken 2

Review by LondonFilmFan

Stars: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace, Rade Serbedzija, Leland Orser | Written by Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen | Directed by Olivier Megaton

Editor’S Note: This is a re-posting of our review of the UK cinematic release of Taken 2 as DVD’s were not available for review. Note the references to cuts made may not apply to the DVD and Blu-ray release as those are an “extended” cut.

For the sequel to 2008’s hit action-thriller Taken, writer/producer Luc Besson has doubled down the dumb of the original film’s rather daft, but enjoyable nonetheless, premise. Had this been the worst of Taken 2’s problems, the result may have still been a passable Mills family holiday in Istanbul full of fisticuffs, shootouts and all around Liam Neeson bad-assery. Unfortunately, Besson and co-scripter Robert Mark Kamen have, along with Twentieth Century Fox’s unabashed greed, »
