“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has picked up another award on its march to the Oscars, nabbing the feature prize at the 50th Annie Awards, presented by Asifa-Hollywood, on Saturday evening.
In addition to being named the top film by the animation industry, “Pinocchio” led the winners’ list with five trophies overall, including the award for best direction for del Toro and fellow director Mark Gustafson. The stop-motion movie also picked up wins for music, production design (Curt Enderle and Guy Davis) and character design (Tucker Barrie).
Del Toro, who came directly from the PGA Awards where he received the trophy for producing ‘Pinocchio,’ was thrilled to win the Annie for direction alongside Gustafson. “Can I say this? I wanted the fucking Annie so much. It’s the most gorgeous thing in the world!” He noted that the Annies ceremony was the one place that he didn’t have to point...

Boasting a vintage 1930s 2D visual style and packed with wacky antics, “The Cuphead Show!” is the latest addition to Netflix’s burgeoning animation slate. The 12-episode series, based on the hugely popular run-and-gun game from Studio Mdhr, follows the adventures of brothers Cuphead and Mugman as they hop out of the frying pan and into the fire only to land on their feet ready for more high-octane escapades.
The reckless and impulsive Cuphead, voiced by Tru Valentino, is tempered somewhat by his cautious and slightly neurotic brother Mugman (Frank Todaro), while Elder Kettle (Joe Hanna) is the patient guardian who ensures order in their snug little cottage on Inkwell Isle. Luke Millington-Drake voices the duo’s nemesis, The Devil, with Wayne Brady pitching in as the voice of the Cab Calloway–styled big band leader King Dice, and Grey Griffin as the noir-inflected Ms. Chalice.

When the video game “Cuphead” was released in 2017, it became something of an instant classic in the animation community. Studio Mdhr’s shoot ‘em up indie platformer, in which players take control of the title character as he goes on a quest to defeat the devil, is a loving tribute to the Golden Age of animation, with graphics that mimic the rubber hose style of the earliest Mickey Mouse and Fleischer Studios shorts. Even Dave Wasson, who doesn’t normally play video games, kept his eye on the game when it was first announced in 2013. And when he sat down to play it, he was completely blown away.
“They just nailed it in a way that I don’t think anybody else really ever has in any medium since the original 1930s,” Wasson says.

Wayne Brady will make his way to Inkwell Isle for Netflix’s The Cuphead Show!
During its Geeked Week event, Netflix revealed that the Game of Talents host will join the animated video game series as villain King Dice. Brady’s character is the manipulative, right-hand man to the devil.
The Cuphead Show! will expand on the game’s characters and world, with an animation style inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons from the 1930s. Cuphead comes from Studio Mdhr and is widely known for its wild boss brawls, challenging gameplay and especially its retro hand-animated style.
The comedy series follows the unique misadventures of the impulsive Cuphead and his cautious but easily swayed brother Mugman. Through their many misadventures across their surreal home of the Inkwell Isles, they’ve always got each other’s back.

MIFA’s Work in Progress presentations offered online delegates a glimpse into some highly anticipated features, series and interactive projects in the second week of Annecy’s online festival.
Leading the pack was upcoming America-Canadian animated TV series from Netflix “The Cuphead Show!” – based on the characters in the best-selling Canadian “gun and run” video game “Cuphead.”
While the game has been highly praised for its authentic “rubber hose” style animation inspired by the Fleischer-produced toons of the 1930s, the TV series aims to go a step further – fleshing out some of the more minor characters and painstakingly reproducing watercolor sets for a digital production line.
According to executive producers Dave Wasson (“Micky Mouse Shorts”) and Cosmo Segurson (“Rocko’s Modern Life”), the pilot has been designed to introduce the show’s two main characters – a pair of energetic and bickering siblings called Cuphead and Mugman.

Annecy 2020 Online’s first wave of special programming for its world-class French animation festival (June 15-30) will include making of sessions, previews, and works-in-progress. The biggest news is that indie feature “Animal Crackers,” which premiered at Annecy in 2017, returns as a making of program, having been acquired by streamer Netflix.
The CG children’s fantasy, directed by Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”) and Scott Christan Sava, concerns a magical box of cookies coming to the rescue of a rundown circus. It contains voice work by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, and boasts the work of character designer Carter Goodrich (“Ice Age”).
Netflix is also bringing a work-in-progress presentation of “The Cuphead Show!” series for 2021, adapted from retro-style video game by showrunners Dave Wasson (“Mickey Mouse”) and Cosmo Segurson (“SpongeBob Squarepants”). Netflix is set to produce an animated series based on the incredibly popular video game Cuphead. The series will be called The Cuphead Show! and it’ll be cool to see how it turns out!
I love the game! It has a very cool style as the animation in it is inspired by the classic Fleischer cartoons of the 1930s. The series will have that same style, and it will also “expand upon the characters and world of the game, which centers on titular hero Cuphead and his brother Mugman who make a deal with the devil in a high-stakes gambling match.”
The series will be executive produced by C.J. Kettler (Carmen Sandiego) from King Features, while Cuphead creators (and brothers) Chad and Jared Moldenhauer will also serve as executive producers for Studio Mdhr. “Rocko’s Modern Life” is about to take a fresh look at modern life, and the animated wallaby — who hasn’t been seen since 1996 — isn’t exactly a huge fan of what he sees.
The opposite could be said of his fans, who gave a rapturous ovation to the first footage screened publicly of the new movie, “Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling.” The revival special doesn’t debut until 2018, but Comic-Con attendees got to see Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt return to earth — after being stuck in space for the last 20 years — and witness how they experience a modernized O-Town for the first time.
“The last time we saw our heroes, they were in outer space. This picks up exactly where we left off,” director Cosmo Segurson said during the hour-long panel discussion. “They’re reacting to now. The characters have not changed — decidedly so.”
