Review: Did 'The Muppets' add 'a little more joy' with revamped show?

2 February 2016 6:00 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Last month, I spoke with new Muppets showrunner Kristin Newman about her plans to bring the characters back to their roots. Those ideas all sounded promising, but how well were they executed? Well, tonight's episode was the first she was involved with from beginning to end (though she did some rewriting on the last episode to air back in December), and I have some thoughts on whether it lived up to expectations coming up just as soon as I sell oven mitts on Etsy... Self-awareness has always been a key part of the Muppets formula. The Muppet Show was a backstage showbiz comedy, The Muppet Movie featured the characters making and watching a movie about how they first met (and the script for the movie itself becomes a plot device), Kermit and the others in The Great Muppet Caper commented about what part of the movie they were in, and »

5 great TV one-season wonders: The Watchlist

2 February 2016 1:58 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Some TV shows are meant to run for years and years, only getting better and more impactful the longer they go. Others, though, were destined to live fast, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse, and in some ways feel even more special because our time with them are so brief. Here are the five best one-season wonders: 5)Terriers. Terrible name, terrible marketing, and a premise that sounded been-there, done-that doomed this wonderful 2010 private eye drama with spectacular buddy chemistry between Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James. 4)Ez Streets. This intricate and engrossing 1996 drama about the cops and crooks of an unnamed Rust Belt city was a few years early for the cable drama revolution, and wildly out of place on CBS, but the lucky few who tuned in saw something special. 3)Joss Whedon's 2002 sci-fi/Western mash-up Firefly was doomed from the start, with a premise that was hard to »

20 Film Directors Who Could Define 2016

30 January 2016 7:25 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Warner Bros.

It’s the beginning of a new year, and with it comes a deluge of new movies: blockbusters, biopics, arthouse films… you name it. There’s a lot to be excited for.

The start of the year inevitably also brings a torrent of lists compiling and comparing the most anticipated upcoming movies, but what about the faces behind the cameras. What of the film-makers? Why shouldn’t they be given a similar share of the spotlight? After all, it is their work, their decisions and their talent that shapes which films will be considered the best come years end. This then is a celebration of the most important film-makers of the year.

A lot can happen in a single year — directors who were complete nobodies in 2014 may have become superstars in 2015. Honestly, before Jurassic World, who on Earth had known about Colin Trevorrow? Before Star Wars, who had »

Zack Snyder and Jesse Eisenberg Talk Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman

29 January 2016 11:35 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor was a controversial one, to say the least. As most interpretations of the character are of a middle-aged man, to swing so far into the opposite direction seemed to fly in the face of any aspect of the comic canon. It didn't help that Jesse Eisenberg had, as recently as 2010, portrayed another technological wunderkind in the film The Social Network.

In a recent interview with Empire, director Zack Snyder said the following in regards to that very subject.

"Just from a pop-cultural viewpoint you can't pretend the [Social Network] movie doesn't exist. Because he has played Mark Zuckerberg, Jesse represents a very contemporary sort of business model. I the sort of post-dotcom world where fortunes can be made from your basement, it is not hard to image Jesse-as-Lex being as powerful as he is."

Actor Jesse Eisenberg didn't seem to agree with his director on this front. »

By Michael Russnow There’ve been 97 minority actors nominated since 1939 when Hattie McDaniel became the first Black Oscar recipient for playing a servant in Gone With The Wind. And that is part of the problem, because for many, many years Blacks and other minorities were relegated to roles not only of a supporting nature but indicative of the racist times when their lots in major professions were limited. Live action fairytale movies: UK release date calendar

When to expect all the upcoming live action fairytale movies, including Dumbo, Beauty And The Beast and two Jungle Books…

You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films. (A whopping 21 by our count.)

Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success, »

Freaks and Geeks: Judd Apatow Open to a Series Reboot? Well...

20 January 2016 6:28 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

During a TCA panel about his new Love TV series, coming to Netflix, Judd Apatow was asked, again, if there is any hope for a revival or reboot of the Freaks and Geeks TV show, cancelled by NBC, far too soon. When he answered, Apatow forgot to slam the door shut and bolt it, and it seems industry reports parsed his answer as containing more hope than he intended.

What is sure, is that Apatow praised the Freaks and Geeks cast and crew, who have gone on to prove themselves as special as fans knew they were, 16 years ago. The Freaks and Geeks cast includes: Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, James Franco, Samm Levine, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Star, Busy Philipps, and Sarah Hagan.

Judd Apatow On A Freaks And Geeks Revival: “It Could Happen”

18 January 2016 11:16 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Surrounding the promotion of his new Netflix series Love, Judd Apatow gave fans of Freaks and Geeks a potential reason to be excited for the show’s thought-to-be-over future. When asked about the possibility for a revival of Freaks and Geeks, given the popularity of bringing back beloved properties into the modern era, Apatow said that the return of the classic series “could happen.”

“All of those characters died in a super-max prison,” Apatow said, before adding, ” You never know. It could happen.”

Far from a confirmation of a new season for Freaks and Geeks, Apatow’s words at least give fans of the short-lived show the hope for a return to its characters in the future. When it originally aired in 1999 for one season, the show followed the stories of a collection of misfits in a Michigan high school.
