Deborah Kerr: What Lies Beneath

Deborah Kerr, Burt Lancaster, From Here to Eternity. With Deborah Kerr, it’s not the bare shoulders that matter. It’s the eyes. Deborah Kerr, who died at the age of 86 on Oct. 16, 2007, has usually been labeled the cinematic embodiment of the English Rose: ladylike from coiffure to pedicure, perfectly enunciated English, a distinctive coolness, poise and class. I won’t argue with that description (except to point out that this English Rose was born in Scotland), but all the same I wonder if any of those labelers have ever watched Deborah Kerr on screen other than the "Shall We Dance?" sequence in The King and I. Then there are those who have seen two Deborah Kerr scenes: "Shall We Dance?" and the kissing-on-the-beach bit in From Here to Eternity. Shocking! Who would have guessed that the cool, red-headed British lady could be so fiery? Well, anyone who has paid »

Bette Davis, Fay Kanin: AMPAS Only Two Women Presidents

Don Ameche, Honorary Oscar-less Claudette Colbert in Mitchell Leisen's Midnight Honorary Oscars and Women Pt.3: Deceased Honorary Oscar-less – Joan Crawford, Ava Gardner, Claudette Colbert, Greer Garson Most — though definitely not all — male winners of Honorary Oscars for career achievement merited their statuettes because, whether or not you or I admire their acting or directorial or producing or screenwriting skills, they hold an indelible place in motion picture history. But if gender-related prejudices haven't played a role in the selection of honorees, why hasn't the Academy been able to find more women deserving of that same recognition? * I didn't include the numerous special Oscars given to individuals for specific achievements (e.g., to William Cameron Menzies for his work with color in Gone with the Wind), or in recognition for "contributions" to the Academy. The latter Honorary Awards were "Thank You" — not career — Oscars. In any case, with one exception — Onna White, »

365 Days, 100 Films #97 - Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Miracle on 34th Street, 1947.

Written and Directed by George Seaton.

Starring Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, Natalie Wood, Edmund Gwenn, Porter Hall and Gene Lockhart.

Synopsis:

A department store Father Christmas turns out to be the real deal, and is taken to court over it.

“Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind.”

This is the problem Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) identifies early on in Miracle on 34th Street. Something has been lost in years past. People aren’t embracing the Christmas spirit as much. They don’t seem to believe anymore.

It’s quite difficult to listen to him say that, so sincerely and with a magical glint in his eyes, whilst bashing the head of a chocolate replica of his likeness on the corner of a bowl. Thornton’s make their edible Santas far too hard, and there’s no other way to do it. »

Frederica Sagor Pt.3: The Way Of All Flesh Plagiarism

6 January 2012 7:04 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Frederica Sagor Pt.2: Women Screenwriters in 1920s Hollywood [Photo: Emil Jannings in The Way of All Flesh.] Frederica Sagor's reported final Hollywood screen credit was the scenario for the 1928 slapstick comedy The Farmer's Daughter, directed by Arthur Rosson at Fox. Marjorie Beebe, previously featured in several comedy shorts, had the title role (no relation to Loretta Young's 1947 Oscar-winning Congresswoman-to-be). In her book, Sagor says she was paid $750 a week (approx. $9,700 today) to write the story for this programmer — one she hated — about rural lovers and piles of manure. The previous year, Sagor had married screenwriter Ernest Maas, who held an executive post at Fox. In her autobiography, she states that the couple wrote a story named Beefsteak Joe, inspired by the life of Maas' father, that was misappropriated by Paramount and released as The Way of All Flesh. Directed by Gone with the Wind's Victor Fleming, the now-lost melodrama — Madame X meets Stella Dallas in »
