Review: Satan Hates You

2 November 2011 1:20 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Remember that cartoon staple of the angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other? James Felix McKenney’s new film, Satan Hates You, is a darkly comic, and ironically unfunny twist on that idea with not much else going on, and it’s a shame.

He has managed to waste genre favorites Michael Berryman (as an overly moralistic hotel clerk) Debbie Rochon (a bad girl gone good), Reggie Bannister (a seamy bar owner), and Angus Scrimm (a telev”angel”ist) in a series of throwaway roles that would be better suited to sketches or short films instead of a feature length film that doesn’t really have enough story to tell.

This is meant to be a satiric take on Christian propaganda films, but don’t they really make fun of themselves? The movie tells the dual stories of Marc and Wendy, two “sinners” who are pushed to »

Trailer: John Dies at the End

27 September 2011 12:55 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Here's a trailer for a indie movie that you need to know about, John Dies at the End. From the director of Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep, Don Coscarelli, and starring Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, Doug Jones, Angus Scrimm (The Tall Man from Phantasm!) and Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes, the movie is based on the novel of the same name by David Wong. Whew. That was a lotta names.

First, I'm glad to see Coscarelli back in the movie game. As a kid I unabashedly loved Phantasm and '82's The Beastmaster with Marc Singer and Tanya Roberts. It's been nearly a decade since Bubba Ho-Tep came and went, and instead of getting mired down in producing that sequel that may or may never happen, Coscarelli went off and made something different. And it looks bizarre and cool.

The presence of Paul Giamatti will raise the attention level for this film, »

Trailer: Don Coscarelli is back with ‘John Dies at the End’

26 September 2011 12:41 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

At the age of nineteen, Don Coscarelli became the youngest director to have a feature film distributed by a major studio when he sold his independently produced and critically acclaimed drama, Jim the World’s Greatest, to Universal Pictures. The film was the first collaboration for Coscarelli with the accomplished actor Lawrence Rory Guy, who went on to achieve legendary horror icon status under the screen name Angus Scrimm. The director however is best known for the Phantasm films. The original Phantasm was a worldwide critical and box-office success and won the Special Jury Prize at the Festival du Cinema Fantastique at Avoriaz, France. Now Coscarelli is back with John Dies at the End, based on the novel of the same name by Jason Pargin, aka David Wong of Cracked.com. A trailer has been released which you can see below. Satan Hates You DVD Artwork

2 September 2011 2:49 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Hard to say for certain whether or not Satan Hates You will turn out to be anything more than a bunch of forced humor and a pile of stunt casting. I'll be honest, it certainly appears that way. But I'm curious to give it a whirl and, admittedly, today's look at the DVD cover art is pretty awesome.

Satan Hates You is an over-the-top shocker full of blood, gore and plenty of appearances by genre favorites. Appearances are made by Larry Fessenden (Habit, I Sell The Dead), Angus Scrimm (Phantasm, Alias), Reggie Bannister (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), Debbie Rochon (Night of the Living Dead, Slime City Massacre and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead) and Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes, One Flew Over The Cukoo’s Nest). Satan Hates You was written and directed by James Felix McKenny (Automations, Hypothermia).

Doctor Gash's Tip of the Scalpel: A Tribute to Kane Hodder

31 August 2011 11:47 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Who the hell is Kane Hodder? I distinctly remember saying those exact words. Picture it, a young, 14-year old Doctor Gash. Here I was, not even an intern yet, preparing for a visit to my hometown cinema, The Community Theater, to see Jason Voorhees' newest offering, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood.

And being the burgeoning horror sage I was, I made a point to check out who was playing what role in all my favorite horror movies. I remember looking, probably in my newest edition of Fangoria, and discovered Kane Hodder was playing Jason. And I thought: Who the hell is Kane Hodder?

Little did I know, by the time the early teenaged Doctor Gash was first hearing the name Kane Hodder, Kane had already acted or performed stunt work in 10 major films, including House and House 2: The Second Story, The Hills Have Eyes 2 and even Hardbodies. »
