Second Trailer for Fox's 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul' Sequel

16 March 2017 5:44 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"There's a new hero who dares to be... wimpy." Fox has debuted the official theatrical trailer for the latest sequel in the comedy series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this one subtitled The Long Haul, about a family road trip. This is the fourth movie in the cinematic franchise based on the series of books by Jeff Kinney. Young actor Jason Drucker plays Greg, who convinces his family to take a road trip to attend his great grandmother's 90th birthday as a cover for what he really wants: to attend a nearby gamer convention. The cast includes Jason Ian Drucker, Charlie Wright, Owen Asztalos, Tom Everett Scott, and Alicia Silverstone. Surprisingly, this trailer is better than the teaser trailer but cuts out all the gaming convention footage. This actually looks like it might be an enjoyable road trip comedy, but I'm still not going to watch it. Here's the second »

Review: ‘The Last Word’ is a Pleasant, Predictable Sitcom

11 March 2017 6:45 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Harriet Lauler is not a nice women. Taught to be pushy and proud in her days leading an advertising agency in a small California town that still has a daily paper, like much of the town — which also includes a hip indie radio station — she is a dying breed. Beat by beat, though, Lauler (played by the stellar Shirley MacLaine) “evolves” in Mark Pellington’s predictable dramedy The Last Word. Cinematic comfort food comes to mind, and rest assured, mom and grandma will probably have a nice time.

The story features a bit of darkness as Lauler, an intentional women whose gardener and stylist aren’t doing things to her liking (she’s proud enough to rip the clippers out of both of their hands), decides to control her death. No such luck as she overdoses, only to find the obituary of an old nemesis covered in red wine. This »

In The Last Word, Shirley MacLaine stars as Harriet Lauler, a successful, wealthy but not beloved retired businesswoman, who decides to write her own obituary prior to her death. To craft the perfect obit, she hires a young writer at the local newspaper, played by Amanda Seyfried, mostly for her skill in making unpleasant people sound admirable.

Shirley MacLaine plays the kind of flinty character she has played so often and so well since Terms Of Endearment. The film looks like a showcase for the iconic star and indeed MacLaine is the best thing in this unremarkable if well-meaning film. The film credits open with a montage of photos, apparently from childhood to present of the star, which suggests a »

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul Trailer: The Heffleys Hit The Road

20th Century Fox has debuted the first teaser trailer and poster for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul, which is set to hit theaters on May 19. This trailer pokes some fun at the superhero genre, in its own unique way, teasing that none of the caped crusaders, galactic guardians or amazing web slingers over the past decade dared to be "wimpy" like the title character Greg, portrayed by Jason Drucker. This trailer gives fans a better look at the brand new cast that has been assembled for this fourth Wimpy Kid movie.

Back in November, 20th Century Fox unveiled a preview that gave fans a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the new cast members, who replace all of the stars from the first three Wimpy Kid movies. Jason Drucker replaces Zachary Gordon as Greg, with Charlie Wright replacing Devon Bostick as his older brother Rodrick and Owen Asztalos replacing Robert Capron as Rowley. »

City of Los Angeles Awards Its Love to ‘La La Land’

16 February 2017 1:56 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Awards season frontrunner “La La Land” has added another award — a “Made in Hollywood” prize from the City of Los Angeles in recognition of making Lionsgate’s musical comedy-drama in Los Angeles.

The Made in Hollywood Award, hosted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, was presented Thursday in ceremonies at the 1600 Vine at Heart of Hollywood Terrace. The event was a collaboration with O’Farrell, SAG-aftra, the California Film Commission, Film L.A., Teamsters Local 399, the Film Musicians Secondary Markets Fund and the Producers Guild of America.

Rather than stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling accepting the awards, the event was aimed at honoring the below-the-line professionals who worked on “La La Land” and touting the ongoing efforts to persuade producers to shoot in California. Location manager Robert Foulkes, who suggesting using the Hermosa Beach Pier for Gosling’s signature “City of Stars” scene, accepted the award after »
