Clerks - an unlikely multimedia franchise

Mark Harrison Sep 28, 2017

How a 1994 indie hit from Kevin Smith gave birth to an unlikely franchise...

In 1993, Kevin Smith made a movie. Clerks was shot in black and white over the course of three weeks, at night, in the convenience store where Smith worked during the day, on a shoestring budget of $27,575. Smith funded the film himself by dipping into his savings, selling all his comics and maxing out several credit cards.

Even though it became an indie phenomenon when it was picked up by Bob and Harvey Weinstein's Miramax (who gave it a new soundtrack using a post-production budget that was ten times the cost of principal photography) at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, it doesn't have 'franchise starter' written all over it.

Long considered a Gen X touchstone, Clerks is a funny and filthy slice of life movie, which equates a working day for Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) to his namesake's Inferno.

NBC Sports Takes Early Shot at Goal of Marketing NHL

To get the National Hockey League’s many players enthused about the league’s coming season, NBC Sports pitted them against serious competitors: a passel of kids.

In an athletic complex in Stamford, Conn., players including Dylan Larken of the Detroit Red Wings and Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks surprise squads of hockey acolytes. The change in the kids’ faces upon learning who they are squaring off against masks the day’s true purpose. The players have come to Stamford – where NBC Sports has its headquarters – to run before a phalanx of cameras as NBC and the NHL seek to capture their words and images in advance of the 2017-2018 season, which is slated to start October 4. Their pictures and conversations will become video interstitials that might air during an NBC broadcast of an NHL game, or a gif lobbed into a social-media post about a telecast on Nbcsn.

Preacher season 2 episode 11 review: Backdoors

Ron Hogan Aug 29, 2017

Despite being well-written, something about recent Preacher episodes has made them drag for our reviewer. Spoilers...

This review contains spoilers.

2.11 Backdoors

There seems to be a point in every season of a television show where I find my interest beginning to wander. It may not necessarily be the fault of the show, just a symptom of a wandering attention span. If a show is ten episodes, I'm usually fine; if a show stretches out to twelve or thirteen, somewhere near the middle or later in the order, I drift away. I've found myself drifting over the last couple of episodes of Preacher,

Kevin Smith’s Wife Can’t Stand His ‘Comic Book Men’ Live-Tweets (Video)

  • The Wrap
Kevin Smith has the perfect response to his wife telling him she’s isn’t so fond of him live-tweeting his own AMC talk show, “Comic Book Men.” “It’s not like I’m really part of your demographic, am I?,” Smith recalled his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach, once saying. “And I said ‘you f–k Kevin Smith, man!” Smith’s zinger brought down the house at TheWrap’s TheGrill Special Event at the Montage Beverly Hills Hotel on Tuesday night, where the filmmaker was on hand to introduce his boss, AMC President Charlie Collier. (Smith also co-hosts the AMC late night talk show,

Inside Ben Affleck's Past Romances and Headline-Making Relationships
Ben Affleck‘s love life is once again heating up.

Three months after Affleck and Jennifer Garner officially filed for divorce, the actor has started dating Saturday Night Live producer Lindsay Shookus.

“They are spending time together in L.A. Lindsay is staying at Ben’s new house,” a source tells People of the duo, who stepped out together in Los Angeles Thursday night. “They had dinner at Giorgio Baldi last night. They arrived in a limo. They looked happy.”

But before settling down with Garner, Affleck was one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors – and his romances with A-list beauties made headlines.

‘Yoga Hosers’ VOD Review

Stars: Lily-Rose Depp, Harley Quinn Smith, Johnny Depp. Justin Long, Austin Butler, Adam Brody, Ralph Garman, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Haley Joel Osment, Vanessa Paradis, Tyler Posey, Génesis Rodríguez, Jennifer Schwalbach, Sasheer Zamata | Written and Directed by Kevin Smith

So, Kevin Smith… A man whose work I’ve really enjoyed over the years (Clerks 2 and Dogma being my personal highlights, though I used to live for Mallrats), took a, let’s say, interesting path with his recent directorial efforts Red State and Tusk. Exploring the horror genre rather than the comedy/drama he became known for, Smith looks to have a new-found passion for filmmaking, seemingly no longer going through the motions with his View Askewniverse – though he has just announced another Jay and Silent Bob flick!

Instead Smith announced the development of a “True North” trilogy: strange genre tales set in Canada, a country that – like Smith – I have an affinity for.

The unmade films of Kevin Smith

Rob Leane Feb 13, 2017

Superman Lives, The Green Hornet and sadly now Clerks III: here’s a rundown of the Kevin Smith films we’ll probably never see...

Kevin Smith has always had to fight to get his films off the ground: he started his filmmaking career by maxing out multiple credit cards to self-finance Clerks, and more recently, legend has it, it was only Johnny Depp’s decision to come on board as a wacky supporting character that allowed Smith to secure financing for his walrus-centric horror flick Tusk.

Smith has, across his career, been offered several barmy jobs (he rejected a chance to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian back in the 90s) and he’s also signed up for a lot of projects that never got past the script phase.

The latter camp of could’ve-beens is what we’re talking about today, following that news that Clerks III

Kevin Smith is having more fun than ever with “Yoga Hosers”

I think it’s safe to say at this point that most people have a pretty firm opinion about the films of Kevin Smith, as well as the filmmaker himself. Personally, I think he’s a hoot and actually is one of my favorite artists out there. This week, Smith unleashes Yoga Hosers into the world after a debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. As someone who enjoys his various podcasts, hearing the idea sort of birthed during one, much like with Tusk, had me eager to see it. Frankly, it doesn’t disappoint, though I freely admit this won’t be for everyone. It’s a strange beast, but kind of a perfect fit for Smith’s current interests at this point in his career. Again, the movie is, like the aforementioned Tusk, based off of a conversation Smith had with Scott Mosier on SModcast, one of his podcasts.

Kevin Smith's 'Yoga Hosers' Gets Rated R for One Weird Reason

Kevin Smith's 'Yoga Hosers' Gets Rated R for One Weird Reason
We haven't heard much about director Kevin Smith's new movie Yoga Hosers lately, since production wrapped back in June. The director debuted the first trailer at Comic Con, but it still hasn't been officially released yet, and the movie doesn't have a release date in place at this time. Yesterday, the director took to his Instagram page to provide an interesting update about the second installment of his True North Trilogy, which has been slapped with an R rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The reason behind the rating, however, will certainly surprise you, as you can see in his lengthy statement below, which also reveals he's planning a summer release for the movie.

The #MPAA gave my kids movie @YogaHosers an R rating for a cartoony drawing of testicles on a book cover. So now, for the 4th time in my 22 year career, we will

Bluray Reviews: Zombie Fight Club & Hellions

We’ve got a double dose of Scream Factory today, with two film reviews that couldn’t possibly be more different from each other. The first one, a zombie film full of CG blood and the other, a trippy nightmare of a film that will not leave your head for days. Some good, some bad, both hitting shelves this week.

Hellions (Dir. Bruce McDonald)

Partnering A Christmas Horror Story writer Pascal Trottier with Pontypool director Bruce McDonald, Hellions is quite possibly one of the most imaginative horror films I’ve ever seen. Telling a very nightmarish tale, Hellions follows Dora (Chloe Rose, Degrassi: The Next Generation), a young woman who finds out that she is pregnant. Unsure of how to deal with the new, Dora keeps it to herself and when her mother has to go out for the night, Dora is left at home on Halloween, reluctantly passing out candy.
