Kill The Irishman – The Review

7 April 2011 9:21 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Kill The Irishman is a film based on the true story of Danny Greene, a Cleveland man of humble origins and Irish ancestry. Greene never graduated high school, but had an abundance of both street smarts and intelligence, known for his impressive reputation for reading books. Greene was also a man who had both an intense, fundamental good nature matched only by his intimidating toughness and confidence. These traits would combine to mold the man into a legend on the streets of 1970.s Cleveland.

Written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, best known for 2004.s The Punisher starring Thomas Jane, Kill The Irishman has another connection with the popular Marvel Comics vigilante in it.s star Ray Stevenson, who played the anti-hero Frank Castle in 2008.s Punisher: War Zone. not written or directed by Hensleigh. Neither film pale in comparison to this slice of reality, based on recent history but spiced »

Interview: Michael Imperioli, director of The Hungry Ghosts

31 March 2011 10:55 AM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Earlier today, Disc Dish had a chance to speak with Michael Imperioli (The Lovely Bones)—late of TV’s The Sopranos and Life on Mars and currently keeping the streets of urban Michigan safe in Detroit 1-8-7– about his film 2009 The Hungry Ghosts, which is available on DVD from Virgil Films and is currently streaming on Hulu.com.

Written and directed by Imperioli, the movie follows 36 hours in the lives of a group of spiritually bereft New Yorkers including, among others, a hard-living New York City call-in radio show host (Steven Schirripa, Open Season 3), his high-voltage wife (Sharon Angela, TV’s The Sopranos) and a grungy downtown gabber just out of rehab (Nick Sandow, Frame of Mind). Oh, and there’s also a lot of cocaine, booze, gambling, stripping and sex.

The Hungry Ghosts is a horrible descent into the urban maelstrom for some, another typical Tuesday night for others, »

Film Review: ‘Kill the Irishman’ Offers History as Explosions

18 March 2011 2:54 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The amalgamation of big time unions and organized crime in post-WW2 industrial America is as enlightening as any struggle for power. Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s thru the ‘70s was both on the waterfront and had the East Coast influence of New York City’s most notorious crime families. That history is wasted in “Kill the Irishman.”

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Writer/director Jonathan Hensleigh ignores the result of the union/crime grip on Cleveland to focus on one ruffian who seemed unable to die, despite many attempts on his person. Kill the Irishman is the true life story about the rise of Danny Greene, a longshoreman who worked his way up to union organizer, only to be corrupted by its money and power. His comes off in the film as crass and uninteresting, which seems the opposite of what probably is true.

Greene is portrayed by Ray Stevenson, who plays him »

Ray Stevenson in Kill the Irishman

Photo: Anchor Bay Films It was originally simply titled The Irishman, but it has since earned the name Kill the Irishman and it's actually getting a limited release this weekend. Kill the Irishman teams the director of the 2004 edition of The Punisher, Jonathan Hensleigh, with the man who played the 2008 version of the comic book character, Ray Stevenson.

In Kill the Irishman Stevenson plays real life mobster Danny Greene, a man who lorded over Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s. Christopher Walken co-stars as the infamous loan-sharking nightclub owner Shondor Birns, Val Kilmer plays a Cleveland cop who befriends Greene and Vincent D'Onofrio plays John Nardi a one-time influential associate of the Cleveland crime family who eventually formed an alliance with Greene and turned against his crime family. Is that enough talent to get you interested?

Hensleigh co-wrote the film with Jeremy Walters »
