New York Film Review: ‘Wonder Wheel’

New York Film Review: ‘Wonder Wheel’
Woody Allen films now come in three essential flavors, or maybe it just comes down to three levels of quality. Once in a blue jasmine moon, he comes up with an enthralling act of high-wire inspiration, like “Match Point” or “Blue Jasmine,” that proves that he can still be as major as any filmmaker out there. Then there are the quaintly crafted, phoned-in mediocrities, like “Café Society” or “To Rome with Love,” where the jokes feel old and the situations older, like the Woody Allen version of paint by numbers. But then there are the middle-drawer Allen films that still percolate with energy and flair, like “Bullets Over Broadway” or “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” They’re too baubly and calculated to be great, with each Woody trope locking into place, yet damned if they don’t hold you and even, in their way, add up to something (even if it’s ultimately something minor).

Wonder Wheel” is one

“Wonder Wheel” closes Nyff with a commanding Kate Winslet turn

Just a few short hours ago, the New York Film Festival wrapped up its 2017 slate with the Closing Night Selection, Woody Allen’s latest film, the Coney Island set Wonder Wheel. In many ways, this is a coming home for the legendary filmmaker, while also managing to do something a bit different than usual. Eschewing his normal Cannes Film Festival bow before a summer release, Allen took this flick to Nyff, with a winter awards season release to come at the end of the year. He does have a contender on his hands, but perhaps not in the way we initially thought. Read on for more… The movie is a period piece set in Brooklyn’s historic Coney Island during the 1950’s. Lifeguard Mickey Rubin (Justin Timberlake) narrates this story of passion on the boardwalk. Carousel operator Humpy (James Belushi) and his rather beleaguered wife Ginny (Kate Winslet), eke out

Trailer for “Wonder Wheel” showcases one of Woody Allen’s most visual efforts to date

It’s no secret that these days we get one new Woody Allen movie a year. The thing is, usually it’s been a summer release, piggybacking off of a debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Sometimes in this modern era, they become Oscar winners, like Blue Jasmine, Midnight in Paris, or Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Other times, they become unfairly ignored gems, like Cafe Society. Still other times, they appear like “lesser” Allen works. This year, however, things are a little bit different. This time around with Wonder Wheel, Allen and Amazon Studios skipped Cannes, will instead be the Closing Night Selection at the New York Film Festival, and will instead have a December release, right in the heart of awards season. A Trailer dropped today to showcase why Amazon is so bullish on it. You can see it below, but first…a bit of discussion. Plot wise, I’ll

New Images of Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake in Woody Allen’s ‘Wonder Wheel’

Although a Coney Island-set feature seems tailor-made for a summer release, Wonder Wheel will mark the first feature from Woody Allen to get a release outside of this season since 2010’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. Amazon Studios recently set a December 1st limited release for the film and now a pair of new images have arrived.

Starring Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake, not much is known about the plot yet, but it takes its title from the Deno’s amusement park located there, whose circular main attraction opened back in 1920. Also starring Juno Temple, Jim Belushi, Tony Sirico, Jack Gore, Steve Schirripa, and Max Casella, expect more details to arrive soon, including a likely festival premiere in a few months. In the meantime, check out the new photos below courtesy of French distributor Mars Films.

Wonder Wheel opens on December 1.

John Oliver Takes On Local News Stations and Their Scary Conservative Corporate Owner — Watch
According to a recent Pew study, Americans place more trust in local news than they do national news, but is that trust misguided? In last night’s segment of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver revealed that the majority of local news stations are owned by a right-leaning corporation named Sinclair Broadcast Group, which requires subsidiaries to air certain segments, including one called “Terrorism Alert Desk.”

That’s a problem, especially considering very few people had ever heard of this company before last night. “Wow, it is a little disconcerting to learn that something you’ve only just heard of is throwing around 4 billion dollars,” Oliver said. “It’s like finding out that ExxonMobil just got bought, and it was by the little twerp that plays the new Spider-Man.”

Woody Allen’s Latest Wonder Wheel Unveils First Pic Of Justin Timberlake And Kate Winslet

Even at 81 years young, Woody Allen’s work rate continues to be the stuff of legend. For generations, the prolific filmmaker has operated at a remarkably brisk clip, churning out one quirky feature after another, and culminating with the release of last year’s somewhat forgettable romantic dramedy Café Society.

But a mixed reception has never stopped Allen before and sure enough, the director is behind the lens once again for Wonder Wheel, a 1950s-set period drama in which Justin Timberlake takes point as a lifeguard. Seen above alongside Juno Temple and the Oscar-winning Kate Winslet, Timberlake’s character will reportedly have some sort of romantic dalliance with Winslet’s, while Tony Sirico’s mysterious character is the one threatening to throw a spanner in the works.

Set under the grand shadow of Coney Island’s iconic Ferris wheel – known locally as the ‘Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn’ – Wonder Wheel also stars Jim Belushi,

Woody Allen’s Next Film, Starring Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake, Titled ‘Wonder Wheel’

Although it hasn’t been officially announced by U.S. distributor Amazon Studios yet, if history repeats itself, a new Woody Allen film will arrive this summer. It’s also the most fitting release window in some time for the director as his next feature takes place in the summer days of the 1950s, specifically in Coney Island. Although no more plot details beyond the setting have been revealed, the newly announced title should be of no surprise to those familiar with the Brooklyn locale.

Titled Wonder Wheel, it takes its name from Deno’s amusement park located there, whose circular main attraction opened back in 1920. This title was revealed by Mars Film CEO Stephane Celerier (via Woody Allen Pages), so presumably they’ll reunite with Allen to distribute his latest film in France once again.

Starring Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake (who plays a life guard, as we can

Casting 'Clown Car '16, the Movie'

Casting 'Clown Car '16, the Movie'
Start with the title: Clown Car! may sound like the movie someone will inevitably make about the 2016 presidential campaign, but how about evoking those great Seventies wacky-journey films like Death Race 2000, Vanishing Point or Smokey and the Bandit?

When I raised the question on Twitter, suggestions included All the President's Wanna-Bes, Every Which Way But Left, Cannonball Rug, A Kochwork Orange and the subtly appropriate Hair.

All excellent ideas, and we may have to put the movie name to a separate vote. Right now, though, the more pressing question is
