Michael Imperioli: An Original Portrait

24 September 2009 12:44 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

To benefit Golden Bridge for Tibet, Michael Imperioli held a preview screening last week of his new film "The Hungry Ghosts." On behalf of 'Golden Bridge', Tibetan Lama Namkha Rinpoche spoke to an audience that included "Sopranos" family members Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Robert Iler, and Lorraine Bracco among others. Michael Imperioli is unquestionably an enormously impressive and engaging actor. In fact, he's a great actor. With "The Hungry Ghosts" he adds writer/director to his resume and pulls masterful performances from Steven R. Schirripa, Sharon Angela, Nick Sandow, and Aunjanue Ellis. I asked Imperioli to sit for my Huffington Post portrait series, and to write a few words about his new film "The Hungry Ghosts". The screenplay of "The Hungry Ghosts" was written in the Fall of 2007 and by the Spring of 2008 »

He introduces himself to the team and begins his analysis of these poor creatures who were once human but, due to unproductive or lackluster lives, have been reborn as angels. Lives of Sopranos, Humans, and Angels Connect in ‘Circledrawers’

29 May 2009 11:35 AM, PDT | Tilzy.tv | See recent Tilzy.TV news »

You know when you’re sleeping next to someone and that someone wakes you up in the middle of the night and starts telling you a dream? And then you’re like, “Uggghhh…but I’m sleeping!” but he or she tells you the dream anyway? And his or her subconscious story is a little vague, far-fetched and confusing, and makes you remember how your dreams are awesome but other people’s dreams are boring? The Icelandic web series, Circledrawers certainly isn’t boring, but it’s kinda like listening to someone else’s dream. As Sopranos‘ star Steven Schirripa describes it, “I don’t really understand it and I’m not sure if the characters in the show understand it, but it’s a really, really well done, cool show. In season one, the world of the Circledrawers is slowly introduced. We’re invited to believe that a grim »

D'Onofrio, Sorvino and Jones Join 'The Irishman'

It appears I was most likely wrong in thinking Lightening Entertainment's The Irishman would be a direct-to-dvd title as the production house is out pre-selling the film at the Cannes Film Festival and Screen Daily has additional names to add to the cast. Already cast in the film, which will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jeremy Walters, are Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer and Ray Stevenson and Screen Daily announces Vincent D'Onofrio, Paul Sorvino and Vinnie Jones have also joined the cast. The film was inspired by Rick Porrello's "To Kill The Irishman: The War That Crippled The Mafia" and tells the story based on the life of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson), who lorded over Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s. Walken is onboard to play infamous loan-sharking nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer will portray a Cleveland cop who befriends Greene. Steve Schirripa, »

Icelandic filmmaker Ólafur Jóhannesson is one of the country’s busiest director. Last year he premiered his first feature length fiction film The Higher Force, co starring The SopranosMichael Imperioli, after focusing solely on documentaries earlier in his career. His pseudo doc The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela won The Teddy at last year’s Berlin Film Festival and this summer he’s gearing up for another feature. But after The Higher Force he created a TV series about angels working basically as God’s bureaucrats who want to be reborn as humans. The series was created by Olafur and his frequent collaborator Stefan Schaefer and co-stars other Soprano alumni Steve Schirripa and Sharon Angela.

Today is the day the series premieres so head on over to their website and take a gander.

Dispatch from Rotterdam: Carlos Reygadas and Guy Maddin

27 January 2009 7:49 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

By R. Emmet Sweeney

The 38th International Film Festival in Rotterdam has streamlined its program into three sections, but it hasn't lost its focus. The fest still throws its weight behind young filmmakers, and a previous beneficiary, Carlos Reygadas, has emerged as a central figure early on this year. He's credited as producer on two films, Carlos Serrano Azcona's "El Árbol" (2009) and Amat Escalante's "Los Bastardos" (2008), and he's presenting two of his own works as well. The first is "Serenghetti," a new feature-length video projected on an office building in the center of town, which joins outdoor loops by Guy Maddin and Nanouk Leopold. The second is his earliest film, "Adulte," a seven-minute comic short from 1998, which arrives as part of a series on auteur debuts.

Before the world premiere screening of "El Árbol," Reygadas pumped up his opener "Adulte" by saying, "it doesn't work very well," and we'll leave it at that. »
