Blayne Weaver and Natalie Morales Are Breaking All the Rules in Exclusive Poster Debut for ’6 Month Rule’

22 May 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Rules are made to be broken. At least, so learns Blayne Weaver‘s Tyler in the multi-hyphenate’s latest production, 6 Month Rule. Weaver stars in the new film (which he also wrote and directed) about an unattached heartbreaker who lives by a complex set of rules when it comes to his dating life – the purpose of all them is to keep Tyler unattached (and thus, un-hurt). The rules work for Tyler, but they’re about to be bent (or even broken) when he meets Natalie Morales‘s stunning Sophie, a free spirit that doesn’t give a damn about those rules. If you think you’ve heard this story before, you probably haven’t, as Weaver continues to exhibit a real knack for crafting characters that are believable and well-rounded (even if the audience wants to shake them into some sense) and swirling them up in situations that cleverly subvert rom-com tropes. IFC Decides To 'Save The Date' With Rom-Com Starring Lizzy Caplan, Alison Brie, Mark Webber & More

15 May 2012 7:46 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Four months removed from its Sundance premiere, Michael Mohan’s “Save The Date” has finally landed a North American distribution deal with IFC Films. This is the second high-profile release the distributor has picked up in as many weeks, recently having brokered a deal to release Walter Salles’ adaptation of the landmark Jack Kerouac novel, “On The Road” which is set to premiere next week at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mohan co-wrote the script with Egan Reich and acclaimed graphic-novelist, Jeffrey Brown, and it’s an endearing romantic comedy (read our review here, and an interview with Mohan here) that stars Lizzy Caplan (“Party Down”) as a young woman adrift in the aftermath of a failed relationship and in the throes of a rebound during the runup to her sister’s wedding. “Save The Date” also stars Alison Brie (“Community,” “Mad Men”), Martin Starr (“Party Down”), Mark Webber, and Geoffrey Arend. »

IFC Acquires Sundance Comedy Save The Date

15 May 2012 7:17 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With a cast that boasts buzzed about comedic actors.like Community's Alison Brie and Party Down's Lizzy Caplan and Martin Starr.as well as a unique perspective on the romantic comedy, Save the Date drew plenty of attention at this year's Sundance Film Festival, including a nod for the Grand Jury Prize in the drama category. Yet somehow the sophomore effort from writer-director Michael Mohan (One Too Many Mornings) did not score a distribution deal.until now. Variety reports that at long last IFC has purchased all North American rights to the unconventional romantic comedy that stars Brie and Caplan as two sisters whose misadventures in romance involve wedding planning, rock stars, and a mild-mannered marine biologist, making it the last major purchase out of Sundance. However the trade reveals it wasn't cold feet that kept IFC from closing the deal on Save the Date, it was the »

Hill Country Ff Review: 6 Month Rule

4 May 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Romantic comedies are a dime a dozen these days, whether they're Hollywood films trying to eke laughs out of cruel jokes and raunchy humor, or indies with the ever-popular Manic Pixie Dream Girl and an overly earnest soundtrack. 6 Month Rule, which I saw at Hill Country Film Festival, looked like it might fall into the latter category ... but some very real emotional scenes and a refreshing lack of artificiality made it a standout movie.

Tyler (Blayne Weaver) has a lot of rules about his frequent and brief relationships with women -- when to call (or not), what to say, how to "fade" out of a relationship, and how long it takes before recuperation from a painful relationship is complete (the title rule). A montage of breakups with women in the same bar, using the same lines, says it all. When his best friend Alan (Martin Starr) loses his fiancee to another man, »

Alison Brie on Frumpy Trudy and Her Art-School Sexual Experimentation

1 May 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

We went shopping in Soho with Alison Brie earlier this year and watched her try on a host of unfortunate dresses while we discussed her talented feet (she can make an egg-salad sandwich with ‘em), and her roles on two of our favorite TV shows, Community and Mad Men. Here’s what didn’t make it into the original profile, including her thoughts on frumpy Trudy, the inspiration for type-a Annie, and Brie’s art-school sexual experimentation. What was your experience shooting Save the Date?It was so fun. When we shot that movie we were all so close. It’s basically a five-hander with Martin Starr and Lizzy Caplan and Geoffrey Arend and Mark Webber. It sounds lame to say when people say "passion project" and you want to punch them in the face. But it was like we all just loved making it and we were so close when we did it. »

Diff: Michael Mohan Talks 'Save The Date' Starring Lizzy Caplan & Why It Needs To Be Seen On The Big Screen

29 April 2012 7:59 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

At a recent screening at the Dallas International Film Festival, writer-director Michael Mohan had to narrate the opening of his second feature film when it began with no sound: "Right now you're hearing the sounds of a book store. There might be a car driving by, and that guy is about to drink coffee." Fortunately the projectionist was able to restore sound by the time the title sequence started, but the botched and awkward opening set the mood for the equally awkward and uncomfortable situations that befall Lizzy Caplan in the romantic-comedy, "Save the Date."

The light and endearing film (you can read our review from Sundance right here) follows a struggling illustrator and bookstore manager (Caplan) who struggles with emotional vulnerability and commitment in the run up to her sister's wedding (played by "Community" and "Mad Men" star Alison Brie). And although the cast is rounded out by a »

5 Things We Learned About 'Freaks & Geeks' From The Av Club's Epic Walkthrough With Paul Feig

While the show only lasted a season (although ratings were enough that, were it on today, it would be a big hit), so much of what's proved successful in the comedy world in the last decade can be traced back to " Freaks & Geeks." Executive produced by Judd Apatow, who's been behind many of the most successful comedies in recent years, from "Anchorman" to the upcoming "The Five-Year Engagement," and created by Paul Feig, who reunited with Apatow for last year's smash hit "Bridesmaids," it followed a group of nerds and burnouts in a Michigan high school.

And looking back, the cast is a who's who of the people that have made you laugh in recent years: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, Samm Levine and Busy Phillips were all in the original cast, along with Linda Cardellini, while her screen brother John Francis Daley wrote the screenplay for »

Kickstart This: Animated 'Dome', 'Creep!' and 'Terrible Week' Musical

Welcome back to another Kickstart This, FirstShowing's weekly column dedicated to highlighting cool (and sometimes unusual) independent fundraising projects that need your help to survive. This week, we've got two Kickstarter campaigns and an IndieGoGo project that we think are worth your while. There's Dome, an animated film about a robot with multiple celebrity endorsements; It's A Terrible Week for Singing, a musical feature about an unlucky puppeteer; and also Creep!, a multifaceted project about a terrible monster movie from the 1960s. Check out all of them below, and don't forget to donate if you can. Read on! "Let's Kickstart this sumbitch!" So says Party Down and Freaks and Geeks actor Martin Starr about this first project, a cool animated feature called Dome. It looks like a dirtier version of Pixar's Wall-e, and Starr isn't the only celebrity endorsing this. It's also got the attention of "Lost" co-creator & Prometheus co-writer »

New Girl Recap: Who Fancies the Fancyman?

28 March 2012 6:25 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Adulthood: Nobody is good at it. That was the semi-reassuring message of last night’s New Girl, which brought in Martin Starr and a cast of college kids to remind us that the line between sophisticated Fancyman and drunk bartender puking alongside the road is thinner than we might think. If Dermot Mulroney’s Russell is a stand-in for a particular kind of adulthood — the kind that involves a lot of money and responsibility — then Starr’s character Dirk is his polar opposite. Where Russell has a job and a family, Dirk just has scarves and graduate degrees. His false maturity throws Russell’s real maturity into relief. Can we talk about how perfect Martin Starr is for the part? He gets cast as a generic sad sack a lot, and he’ll always be remembered as sweet, gawky Bill Haverchuck in Freaks and Geeks, but it’s roles like Dirk, »

'New Girl': Dermot Mulroney As Nervous As Jess (Video)

28 March 2012 1:26 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Dermot Mulroney was back on "New Girl" (Tue., 9 p.m. Et on Fox) as Russell, the rich and successful older man who wrapped last week's episode by asking her out on a date. Only the date didn't go as well as Jess expected. Rather than a kiss at the close of a night, she got an awkward hug complete with a pat on the back. What does that mean?

In classic Jess fashion, she fills awkward moments with even more awkward talking, but for all of her foot-in-mouth syndrome, Russell seems to genuinely still be interested in her. And she can't for the life of her figure out why. He's successful, established and fully has his life together. She's living with three idiots and has no idea about herself.

Add to the mix the smartest guy Nick knows in Dirk (Martin Starr), and you've got the most awkward first kiss in history. »

New Girl Review: Who's the Sexretary?

27 March 2012 7:30 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Is it just me, or is New Girl totally rocking the guest stars? It seems like every other day another big star or indie name - like Jeane Tripplehorn or Thomas Lennon - signs up for a dose of New Girl’s special kind of crazy.

This week’s episode,"Fancyman (Pt. 2)," had not one but two special guests: Dermot Mulroney reprising his role as Fancyman – I mean, Russell – and Martin Starr of Party Down fame as Nick’s college buddy, Dirk. Mulroney’s presence is one of the few things that qualifies this as a follow-up to "Fancyman Pt 1."

The Occupy theme from last week seems to have run its course, and even though I was hoping that New Girl would commit all the way and add some complexity to that plotline, it’s okay that it didn’t. I would rather have Liz Meriwether drop it all together than attempt another shallow rendition. »

Tonight on New Girl: First Date Disaster for Jess (Photos and Sneak Peaks)

The 'Fancyman' was introduced to the world of New Girl last week and tonight's episode sees Jess (Zooey Deschanel) going on a first date with Russell (Dermot Mulroney) and it doesn't go according to plan. Martin Starr (Freaks & Geeks, Party Down) is guest starring as Dirk, a friend of Nick's (Jake Johnson) from college and Winston (Lamorne Morris) starts to panic about his relationship with Shelby (Kali Hawk). Meanwhile Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) secret relationship with Cece (Hannah Simone) is about to become not-so-secret to one of the roommates.

Russell went from infuriating Jess to wooing her in the space of last week's episode after he criticized her teaching technique. With Nick's help Jess attempted to tell Russell that she wasn't going to apologize to him regarding her teaching methods, even if it meant that Russell would »

"Vampire Diaries": Elena's parents have officially been cast! In a season finale flashback, we'll see Miranda and Grayson Gilbert, played by local Atlanta actors (probably no one you'd recognize). Don't expect to get a very in depth look at the parental units, though -- they barely have any lines. Mostly, we'll see evidence of what we already knew: They don't mix well with water. High Road Blu-ray Q&A with Matt Walsh and Horatio Sanz

29 February 2012 7:57 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Director Matt Walsh discusses his improvised comedy High Road, arriving on Blu-ray and DVD March 6

There's a classic line in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder where Robert Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus, an Australian actor playing an African-American soldier, says, "I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary." Of course, on the actual DVD commentary, there was Robert Downey Jr., still in character, chatting away as Kirk Lazarus. Last month, when I had the chance to drop in on a DVD commentary recording session for the comedy High Road, it actually was somewhat similar... but they didn't go full Kirk Lazarus.

High Road, which debuts on Blu-ray and DVD March 6, is a completely improvised comedy movie about Fitz (James Pumphrey), a drug dealer who has to hit the road with his young pot-slinging Padawan (Dylan O'Brien) after a deal goes awry. So, naturally, the improvisational tone carried into the recording booth, »
