Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams – Crazy Diamond Review

8 October 2017 2:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Villordsutch reviews Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams: “Crazy Diamond”…

This week’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams takes its inspiration from the story originally titled “Sales Pitch”, which was published way back in 1954 within Future magazine, now here delivered in 2017 under the new moniker of “Crazy Diamond”. This reimagined version has been written by Tony Grisoni (The Young Pope, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and is directed by Marc Munden (National Treasure, Utopia).

In a world of genetic-splicing and chimeras, where the food you eat is sold to you with barely a shelf life of a day and it’s illegal, if not impossible, to grow your own food, Ed Morris (Steve Buscemi) longs to escape this world with his wife via the open sea.  However, this isn’t that simple due to the controlling nature of this new world and the pull factors woven around them. »

Crazy’s the right word for it. Electric Dreams delivers its most unusual, packed episode yet…

1.4 Crazy Diamond

Forty-four novels, one hundred and twenty-one short stories, six published volumes of correspondence… nobody could ever say Philip K. Dick lacked for ideas. The same goes for this week’s Electric Dreams, which is, to use a technical term, chocka. There’s environmental collapse, a dystopian level of state control, widespread infertility, implanted consciousnesses, maritime-themed sci-fi architecture, Julia Davis, a gang of piratic teddy boys, Syd Barrett, and a race of chimeric pig-people.

And that’s before the plot even kicks in. Crazy Diamond has packed its hour of screen-time to the rafters. »

Fantastic Fest Had a Rough Year, But the Best Movies Featured Powerful Women

29 September 2017 1:39 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This year, Fantastic Fest turned 13, a number that felt apt if you’ve been following the news. Most conversations started like this:

“How are you?”

“How are you?”

Exhale. Hug. Repeat.

Eventually, people got around to talking about the films. Even those were emotional.

Tortured Souls

In past years, bringing context into the Alamo Drafthouse theater meant deciding not to chomp chips and queso during a hushed thriller. This time, audiences welled up watching Carla Guigino confront a lifetime of abuse as the emotionally and physically handcuffed wife in Stephen King’s “Gerald’s Game,” a Lifetime movie-looking low budget adaptation whose blockbuster impact at the Fest might not translate to people at home when it premieres on Netflix. (Guigino, however, is terrific in a dual-of-sorts role as the manacled victim and her empowered subconscious.)

Film Review: ‘Pin Cushion’

22 September 2017 12:25 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Cinema was littered with tales of teenage mean girls well before Tina Fey put a tidy name to their ilk in 2004 — rarer, however, are stories that extend their reign of terror decades past the prom. Achingly fragile and genuinely, preciously peculiar, British writer-director Deborah Haywood’s first feature “Pin Cushion” ambitiously examines the psychological damage wrought by bullying at all ages, admitting the painful truth that for some of those mean girls and their beleaguered victims, growing older does not mean growing up. Given human grounding by the wonderful Joanna Scanlan, as a timidly eccentric single mother seeing her naive adolescent daughter slip into the same hellish social no-woman’s-land from which she has never escaped, Haywood’s filmmaking itself marches to a different drummer. That’s a mixed blessing: Cinematically, “Pin Cushion” goes all in on a heightened, macramé-and-macaroons aesthetic that occasionally smothers the rawer nerves of its storytelling.

Our Friend Victoria review: a lovefest in honour of a silly, sweet and brilliant talent

11 April 2017 11:20 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

You won’t learn much in this tribute to VictoriaWood, but you’ll chuckle and feel warm in that uniquely BBC way. Plus: Peter Kay’s Car Share, a direct descendant of her brand of comedy

‘Inspiring, funny, genius, unique.” So says Maxine Peake of Victoria Wood in Our Friend Victoria (BBC1, 9.30pm), the first of a six-part tribute to the great comedian, actress, pianist, singer, director, screenwriter, and owner of the coolest pudding bowl haircut in history (actually, are there any others?). It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since Vic – as everyone from Richard E Grant to Celia Imrie calls her – died at the age of 62. God, she was great. And God, things have fallen apart since we lost our friend from the north.

This is a lovefest in the time-honoured BBC tradition. Lots of fond, gentle and uncontroversial reminiscences trotted out by the usual suspects. »

London, 1814. In top hat and trench coat, Tom Hardy is every inch the anti-Poldark. He plays James Keziah Delaney, an irascible renegade last seen on a slave ship in Africa and long presumed dead, who shows up at his father’s funeral. It’s a gruff gothic thriller, hooking us in with sordid rumours, gravediggers and supernatural visions. Co-written by Hardy with his dad, Chips, and produced by Ridley Scott.

No Offence review – like having Paul Abbott hurl body parts at you

4 January 2017 11:09 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

You might not have much idea what’s going on in the return of this blackly comic Manchester cop drama, but you’ll have a good time anyway

A funeral, at a crematorium, with a big police presence, headed by Di Viv Deering (Joanna Scanlan). Because the lad who died was son of Nora Attah (Rakie Ayola), matriarch of one of Manchester’s most feared criminal families. Dad is here too, a convicted murderer, no longer married to Nora …

Boom! Uh-oh, big explosion, in the middle of Amazing Grace. Possibly a gas explosion, more likely a bomb. And Dad’s no longer here, he’s got a Clean It Up no pooing (if you’re a dog) sign buried in his skull. And Nora, who was cuffed to her now-deceased ex for the service, breaks his hand in order to get free. She’s well hard, Mrs Attah.

Joanna Scanlan: 'I'm a sexual being. I feel I'm attractive to men – including my husband'

4 January 2017 3:04 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

As Paul Abbott’s all-female cop comedy No Offence returns, its star talks putdowns, poetry – and why sexuality should stop being associated with youth

In a disused youth club behind a carwash in east Manchester, Joanna Scanlan is wriggling urgently out of a red dress. What was once Crossley House has become Friday Street police station, the rundown home to Scanlan’s fearless police chief Vivienne Deering and her motley band of detectives.

Deering is in her office, getting changed into more formal attire, when in walks her new boss: sour-faced Dci Christine Lickberg, played by Sarah Solemani, fresh from Bridget Jones’s Baby. Rule-abiding Lickberg does not approve of Deering’s unorthodox policing. Outside the office, in a very realistic-looking police bullpen, a dozen or so extras busy themselves with paperwork. If they look like they know what they’re doing, it’s because they do: they are all former coppers. »
