Sundance 2018 Ushers In the Age of Independent TV With Indie Episodics Line-Up
At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.

The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.

X Factor winner Cyrus to perform live at Aacta Awards

X Factor winner Cyrus will perform live on the red carpet at this year's Aacta Awards.

Rachel Griffiths and Teresa Palmer have also been anounced as presenters at tonight's ceremony at The Star Event Centre in Sydney.

Griffiths and Palmer will join guests and presenters including Mel Gibson, Radha Mitchell, nominee Patrick Brammall, Stephen Peacocke, Magda Szubanski, Megan Gale and Home and Away's Georgie Parker and Bonnie Sveen.

A highlight of the show will be the presentation of Australia.s highest screen award, the Aacta Longford Lyell Award, to Cate Blanchett..

Mel Gibson is set to present at the 5th Aacta Awards in Sydney next week.

Gibson, who is currently filming World War II film Hacksaw Ridge in Nsw, will be joined by Manu Feildel, Magda Szubanski, Megan Gale, Erik Thomson, and Brenton Thwaites.

Barracuda unearths new talent

Newcomers Elias Anton and Ben Kindon are playing the leads in Barracuda, the 4-part Matchbox Pictures drama for ABC directed by Rob Connolly.

The ABC revealed the casts and storylines of its 2016 adult dramas, all previously commissioned and announced, at its upfronts presentation on Tuesday night.

The broadcaster confirmed a third season of Matchbox Pictures. Nowhere Boys and announced two animated series. Planet 55 Studios. sci-fi/adventure Prisoner Zero follows teen heroes Tag and Gem and their mysterious friend Prisoner Zero.

Ford and Samson star in unlikely love story

Luke Ford and Anna Samson play a distinctly odd couple at the centre of What Time Is My Heart?, the debut feature from writer-director Romi Trower.

Produced by Tristram Miall, the privately financed film also features Brooke Satchwell, Wade Briggs, Meyne Wyatt, Eddie Baroo and Kaarin Fairfax. Shooting wrapped in suburban Melbourne at the end of last month.

Six-part web series Footballer Wants A Wife is set to launch on September 8.

Brooke Satchwell, Ben Nicholas and Cassandra Magrath form the cast of series which parodies reality TV dating shows.

The series was funded through Screen Australia.s Multiplatform Drama program and follows three young footballers as they embark on their modern-day journey to find true love.

The series had been in development since 2012 until Ben Nicholas took the concept to Jonathan Dutton, and Julian V. Costanzo from Crankyfish, a production company specialising in TVCs and story-led digital content..

Nicholas said he didn't feel like there were any roles he was auditioning for that were fun and in line with the type of work he wanted to be doing as an actor.

"I also really wanted to write my own show," he said..

London — Ahead of next week’s content market MipTV in Cannes, Beta Film has inked licensing deals in the U.S., Canada, Israel and a number of European territories for drama series “Wonderland,” which is set on Sydney’s beach.

Beta closed contracts with Hulu for the U.S. as well as with Bell/CTV Group for Canada. The 44 episode one-hour series, revolving around a group of young urban professionals navigating the pitfalls of friendship, love and sex, will also air on Israel’s Hot, Netherland’s Rtl, Norway’s TV2, in the Baltics on Viasat, and on Fox International Channels in the Balkans.

In addition, Beta is in advanced negotiations with several further territories in Europe and Asia.

Network Ten is betting heavily on new and returning reality shows in 2015 to maintain the momentum of this year.s ratings growth and to make the company a more attractive take-over target as potential buyers circle.

News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch has confirmed the 50%-owned Foxtel is looking at buying a small stake in the loss-making broadcaster, reportedly in partnership with Discovery Communications. Cross-media laws would limit Foxtel to a 14.9% stake.

Murdoch told News' Agm that independent advisers have been hired to look at the potential purchase but he ruled out buying his son Lachlan.s stake in Ten.
