Henry Selick Is Back: Nearing Finish Line On His Disney/Pixar Feature & Will Direct Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Graveyard Book’

28 April 2012 8:14 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In 2010 it was announced that Henry Selick, the beloved director of “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” had left Laika Studios, the Portland, Oregon-based animation studio run by Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight. Knight had hired Selick back in 2002 to help transition the studio from Will Vinton Studios (home of the California Raisins, among others) into a 21st century powerhouse. Selick’s first animated feature, the gorgeous “Coraline,” was released in 2009, but just a year later Disney and Pixar came courting and Selick packed his bags. Things have been quiet for a little while but some details have started to emerge about his Pixar project, while Disney has signed him on to a highly coveted property.

First, the Pixar stuff – when Selick was hired by Pixar, many thought it would simply be the studio’s stop-motion animation division, housed on the same sprawling campus as Pixar proper. But Selick has control »

'Pirates! Band of Misfits' Director Peter Lord Talks DreamWorks Animation, Batman & The Allure Of Pirates

25 April 2012 2:01 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This Friday, "Pirates! Band of Misfits" opens, the latest whirligig stop motion contraption by the cracked geniuses at Aardman Animation, the studio that, over the years, has brought us such astounding wonders as "Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit," "Chicken Run," "Arthur Christmas," and the underrated "Flushed Away." 'Pirates' is their second film in conjunction with Sony Pictures Animation, their new home after leaving a partnership with DreamWorks Animation ("The Croods," Chris Sanders' next movie for DreamWorks, was an idea originally developed by Aardman but retained by DreamWorks Animation after the split). We got a chance to talk with Peter Lord, director of "Pirates! Band of Misfits" and the co-founder of the studio (he's a kind of cuddly British John Lasseter proxy), about what drew him to this pirate world, what's next for stop motion animation, the split from DreamWorks, and his new Batman short films. »

Legendary Animator Glen Keane Leaves Disney

25 March 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In what many saw as a shock, veteran Disney animator Glen Keane, one of the so-called celebrity animators from Disney’s “Second Renaissance” in the early 1990s, designing and animating immortal characters like Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” the Beast from “Beauty and the Beast,” and Aladdin from “Aladdin,” left the studio on Friday. Keane had been with the studio for almost thirty-seven years (he briefly departed from the studio to do freelance work but was still contracted almost exclusively for Disney). In his letter of resignation (posted at Cartoon Brew), Keane said, “I am convinced that animation really is the ultimate art form of our time with endless new territories to explore. I can’t resist its siren call to step out and discover them.”

Keane is the son of Bil Keane, creator of “The Family Circus” cartoon strip. Keane joined Disney in 1974 after leaving Cal Arts, and was mentored by Ollie Johnston, »

The Lorax Blockbuster Surprise: Box Office

4 March 2012 1:51 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Ted (Zac Efron), Audrey (Taylor Swift), Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Partly thanks to 3D ticket surcharges — and the fact that five- and ten-year-olds can't go to the movies on their own — the Universal release Dr. Seuss' The Lorax collected $70.7 million in North America this weekend, March 2-4, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That's about $10-20 million more than most had been expecting. That's the third-best March opening ever — if you choose to pretend that inflation and 3D surcharges don't exist. In terms of actual attendance figures, The Lorax is behind not only Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and Zack Snyder's 300, but also Carlos Saldanha's Ice Age: The Meltdown, and quite probably Snyder's Watchmen and the original Ice Age. Among animated films, The Lorax had the fourth-biggest debut ever in non-adjusted dollar amounts. In terms of attendance, it's behind not only Shrek the Third, »

The Lorax Box Office: 2012 Biggest Early Hit

3 March 2012 5:00 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Grammy Norma (Betty White), Audrey (Taylor Swift), Ted (Zac Efron) Dr. Seuss' The Lorax Boosted by 3D ticket surcharges, the Universal release Dr. Seuss' The Lorax collected an estimated $17.4 million in North America on Friday, March 2, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. That's the best domestic opening since the Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart-Taylor Lautner blockbuster The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 last November. Among animated films, The Lorax's Friday debut was the best since Cars 2 last summer. Needless to say, the animated feature directed by Despicable Me's Chris Renaud and co-directed by Kyle Balda will easily surpass The Vow's $41.2 million debut weekend, thus raising the bar for the year's biggest weekend debut. Now, two things: a) in terms of ticket sales, on opening weekend The Lorax should end up only slightly ahead of the Rachel McAdams-Channing Tatum romantic drama, »

New Image from DeamWorks Animation's The Croods

3 March 2012 2:30 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Here's a great new image from DreamWorks Animation's upcoming 3D CG animated movie The Croods set to come out in March of 2013. The has the potential to be a great and funny film. It's being written and directed by Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, who has made a couple of other great animated movies such as Lilo & Stitch and How To Train your Dragon. The original drafts of this script were written by John Cleese, so it would be cool if we found some Monty Python type humor make it's way into this final product.

The film will include an all star cast of voices that includes Nicolas CageRyan ReynoldsEmma StoneCatherine Keener, and Cloris Leachman

Here's the Synopsis:

The Croods is a 3D comedy adventure from DreamWorks Animation that takes us back to the beginning - to a previously undiscovered era known as the Croodacious »

First Look at the Primitive Family that Makes Up 'The Croods'

15 February 2012 5:30 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

So, if Dreamworks Animation's Turbo is the Gastropoda version of Pixar's Cars, then am I wrong to look at this sales art for The Croods and immediately think of it as a Stone Age version of How to Train Your Dragon? The voice cast is made up of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman and -- surprise, surprise -- is helmed by How to Train Your Dragon co-director Chris Sanders and Space Chimps helmer Kirk De Micco. The story takes place in what fictional Crodaceous period, when nature was still a work-in-progress... full of never-before-seen creatures and landscapes and follows the Crood family as an imaginative and resourceful newcomer helps them navigate their way through the fantastic world beyond their cave. De Micco and Sanders co-wrote the script and the film is set to hit theaters on March 22, 2013. Check out the first look art directly below. »

First Look at DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Croods’ and ‘Rise of the Guardians’

14 February 2012 11:12 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Today is the day I learned that the upcoming DreamWorks animation Rise of the Guardians has absolutely nothing to with Zack Snyder‘s owl movie Legend of the Guardians. We got the first look at this adaptation of William Joyce‘s book, which is produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Joyce and Peter Ramsey. With a voice cast of Chris Pine, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law and Dakota Goyo, the film follows a group of fantasy heroes (Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny) that team for a mission to save the word. One can see the first poster below via Bleeding Cool, which doesn’t look far removed from a World of Warcraft game. I know it’s an early look but hopefully the animation quality gets a bump, because if done right, this is concept might just work.

As a director he has helmed The Hostel Series, as a producer he watched over The Last Exorcism, and as an actor he has co-star alongside Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds. Eli Roth has done it all and will make the ground beneath us shake once more. Slashfilm got their hands on some exclusive photos from Nicolás López Aftershock, an English-language action-thriller inspired by the Chilean earthquake. The movie also stars Ariel Levy, Nicolás Martínez, Lorenza Izzo, Andrea Osvart and Natasha Yarovenko, with a special cameo made by international pop super star Selena Gomez. Screendaily has word that the movie has been picked up in 17 countries. Below are the images from Aftershock.

Next up we have our first image from Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, the crime drama lead by teen action star Saoirse Ronan. The movie also stars Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley, Caleb Landry Jones, Jonny Lee Miller and Danny Mays. »

First poster for The Croods

13 February 2012 10:48 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Chris Sanders, the co-director of How To Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch, has a new film next year. It’s The Croods. And here’s the very first poster for it…

The DreamWorks Animation slate has some really interesting titles on it, but if you want our tip for one to keep an eye on, then The Croods would be it.

Much of this is down to the fact that Chris Sanders is co-directing. Sanders has directed two feature films to date. The first was Disney’s excellent Lilo & Stitch. The second was DreamWorks’ excellent How To Train Your Dragon.

With The Croods, he’s teamed up with Kirk De Micco to helm a feature that goes back to the early days of time, when much of the world around us hadn’t evolved yet. The Croodacious period, as it happens.

First Look at DreamWorks' Animated Caveman Family 'The Croods'

13 February 2012 10:24 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Though the film is still over a year away on DreamWorks Animation's forthcoming slate, our first look at the caveman family The Croods has finally showed up online. Bleeding Cool got their hands on a promotional image that almost looks like an official poster if it wasn't for the sloppy release date slapped on the image almost as an afterthought. With the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener bringing the family to life, it's not hard to see which characters they're voicing after seeing them together below. I'm still not a fan of DreamWorks human character design but that's just me. Here's our first look at Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco's The Croods via Bleeding Cool: How To Train Your Dragon collaborators Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco are co-directing this prehistoric animated feature film, which was also developed with the help of Monty »

Meet the Croods

12 February 2012 8:21 AM, PST | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Originally to be an Aardman Animation called Crood Awakening, with John Cleese on the writing staff, The Croods is the newest animated move from Dreamworks and co directed by Chris Sanders, the man who brought us Lilo and Stitch (my favorite Disney movie) and How To Train Your Dragon, and Kirk DeMicco. They also wrote the script. Not much has been seen of the film, but a new poster has just been released. Featuring the vocal talents of Nicholas Cage, Ryan Renyolds, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener, the film takes us back to the previously unknown Croodacious period, when Mother Nature was still experimenting, and plants and animals had yet to evolve into what we know today. At the centre of the story is a family, the Croods, who struggle to survive this ever changing world. A very interesting idea, and it should definitely keep the kids happy. The film »

Extended Thoughts on Lilo and Stitch

5 January 2012 5:40 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The best Disney movies have universal appeal. I would say that the best movies, in general, have universal appeal, but that’s not true. There Will Be Blood isn’t a classic because it appeals to kids as it does to adults. But Disney movies—really, family movies—need to be universal if they want to be classics. Sure, Cinderella may have talking mice and a nefarious cat, but it’s got enough appeal whether you’re 5, 50, 80, or somewhere in between. Some Disney movies have no appeal to anyone, but then there are the Disney movies that appeal only to children. While there’s nothing wrong with these movies—they are family movies, after all—movies like 2002’s Lilo and Stitch end up being unsuccessful to me, because you have to be a very specific age to like it. If you’re not the right age, you’re left in the cold. »
