Darren Criss surprised fans recently with an impromptu performance at the NYC gay piano bar Marie’s Crisis. The Glee star played the piano while singing “A Whole New World” from Aladdin with Tony-winner Lea Salonga, who provided the singing voice of Jasmine in the original 1992 Disney film.
Criss made his Broadway debut last year in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. With the end of Glee near, may we suggest another musical he could step into? He already knows the words to at least one song!

Glee dreamboat Darren Criss recently met up with Lea Solanga at Marie’s Crisis, a piano bar in New York’s West Village. Solanga is best known for Broadway turns in Miss Saigon and Les Mis — and for being the golden-throated voice of Disney heroines (Aladdin‘s Princess Jasmine and Mulan).
Theater and Disney nerds will love their impromptu performance of “A Whole New World.” Criss looks like he’s having the time of his life.

Don’t get your knickers in a twist, mate! I know that technically, there is no such thing as a “British” accent. But what else would you call the English-ish dialect that’s long been used as a catchall in American-made movies and TV shows set anywhere ancient, foreign, and/or magical?
The fantasy thing, at least, makes a certain amount of sense. That genre has its roots in stories like J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga and C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia; naturally, those authors’ homelands (and, therefore, their way of speaking) are associated »

The Mulan team began development in 1994 with a field trip to China; a three week voyage to photograph and draw local landmarks for inspiration and absorb local culture. In contrast to the angled, detailed artwork on The Lion King and Hunchback, the decision was made to simplify the style, paying homage to classical Chinese painting, which also provided the visuals for its opening credits. Despite its simpler artistry, Mulan was also innovative in its use of crowd simulation software (see “Scares”) and saw the advent of Faux Plane, used to add depth to two-dimensional images, most notably during the opening sequence at the Great Wall of China and the final act in the Forbidden City.

The West End revival of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s Miss Saigon has broken box office records on its first day of ticket sales. It took more than £4.4 million yesterday which beat the previous West End record set by monster hit The Book of Mormon which could only manage £2.1 million.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said of the record:
“I’m bowled over with today’s box office take. It’s staggering, today’s response is completely overwhelming.”
Miss Saigon, based on the opera Madame Butterfly, tells the story of a marriage between an American GI and a Vietnamese bar girl. This production will be a complete re-imagining of the classic musical with a grittier look at the designs and operations involved. It will also feature a brand new song “Maybe” for the character of Ellen which English speaking audiences will be hearing for the first time.

Thn’s retrospective of Disney’s Animated Classics continues with Aladdin.
1992/ 90 Minutes
The idea of adapting the Middle Eastern folk tale “Aladdin” was first proposed by songwriter Howard Ashman in 1988. He and longtime collaborator Alan Menken were working on The Little Mermaid at the time, and production was about to begin on Beauty And The Beast. Ashman wrote an initial treatment for the project and collaborated on six songs with Menken.
After The Little Mermaid was completed, co-directors John Musker and Ron Clements turned their attention to writing a first draft script with Linda Woolverton providing a screenplay. Musker and Clements would go on to direct.
Aladdin was the second Disney animated feature to use fully rendered and textured 3D CGI moving backgrounds, in combination with the traditionally animated character animation, a process experimented on with The Rescuers Down Under and utilised to »

Producer Cameron Mackintosh has revealed that his next project will be the revival and ‘retelling’ of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil’s Miss Saigon. The musical first premiered in the West End on 20th September 1989 at Theatre Royal, and after a whooping 4000 performances, it closed in 1999, remaining as a cult favourite touring around the world.
The version that will return to the West End in May 2014 will be based on the newest production, Mackintosh has said. It will also include the feature of a new song called Maybe, sung by the character Ellen. It will be the first time that English audiences will hear the song.
Mackintosh spoke about his latest project, and said that Miss Saigon has always been a fan favourite:
“These requests are not only from a public who remembers seeing it originally but from a generation of new audiences who were too young (or not even »

There’s something uniquely pure about watching My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray 25 years after its initial release. This was the first Japanese-based film from famed writer/director Hayao Miyazaki. He wanted to show audiences and production houses that movies didn’t need violence to succeed. It was an idealistic concept from Studio Ghibli, a company still in its infancy when My Neighbor Totoro was developed. Although the film is not ranked as high as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, the beauty and innocence of Japan was forever immortalized in Totoro.
My Neighbor Totoro starts off when Tatsuo Kusukabe moves his two daughters, Satsuki and Mei, to the countryside to be closer to their mother, who is suffering from a long-term illness. The story doesn’t have an over-arching plot. There are no villains to face or super cure to be found. It’s merely about life. Two city girls discover the wonders of the country. »

About a year ago, Filipina superstar (and former Glee phenomenon) Charice got herself a trendy tomboy haircut and an androgynous new wardrobe, and tabloids in the Philippines lost their minds. Last week speculation about her sexuality reached fever pitch, so over the weekend, Charice sat down with Boy Abunda on the celebrity talk show The Buzz and beautifully, bravely confirmed that yes, she is a lesbian.
She broke down in tears as the interview continued, saying:
Now I want to ask forgiveness to those who don’t understand, to those who can’t accept me. I’m sorry. I can understand. For those who will accept and can accept me, thank you very much. And for what I have done I just want to say that I feel that a heavy weight has been lifted from me now (tears up voice slightly breaks »

Chicago – I usually avoid this kind of hyperbole but I adore the best of Studio Ghibli and know their entire catalog well and so I feel I can say it — “My Neighbor Totoro” is one of the best family films of all time. Hayao Miyazaki’s gentle variation on “Alice in Wonderland,” has everything that we identify with Ghibli, including a respect for nature, magical sense of fantasy, and importance of family.
Available in HD for the first time, “Totoro” is a must-own. While “Howl’s Moving Castle,” also released this week, doesn’t quite stand with the best of Miyazaki (“Totoro,” “Spirited Away,” “Nausicaa,” and “Princess Mononoke,” for the record), it’s still a fun movie and a great fit for HD. It looks beautiful. Miyazaki is timeless and being able to see films as visually stunning as the Ghibli works on Blu-ray is a gift. I wish they were all available. »

Anne Hathaway’s Best Supporting Actress nomination seemed a foregone conclusion — and most Oscar pundits agree that the award itself is hers to lose. But there was a time when Hathaway’s performance wasn’t such a sure thing.
Claude-Michele Schönberg’s Les Mis has been performed countless times since its premiere in the ’80s — and the part of virtuous Fantine, a factory worker whose fall from grace leads to one of the show’s most emotional moments, had been played by some of the theater world’s biggest names, including powerhouses Patti LuPone, Randy Graff, and Lea Salonga.
