Criminal review: “A talented director and impressive cast does not a good movie make”

12 April 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Criminal review: The talented Ariel Vromen and his impressive cast fail to ignite the screen with this sub-par action film set in and around London.

Ariel Vromen, writer and director of the superb The Iceman, the Michael Shannon movie that debuted in cinemas a couple of years back, unites the ultimate movie cast for his follow-up, Criminal. Here’s The Hollywood News’ Criminal review by Paul Heath.

Kevin Costner leads as the character of Jerico Stewart, a death-row inmate who has been singled out as the only man who can save the planet from nuclear disaster. Jerico is apparently the only vessel who can use the brain power of fallen C.I.A. agent Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds) to find out the whereabouts of a hacker who has the power to launch nuclear weapons. Obviously the C.I.A. aren’t the only ones who are after him, and it »

Second Opinion – London Has Fallen (2016)

6 March 2016 9:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

London Has Fallen, 2016.

Directed by Babak Najafi.

Starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Alon Aboutboul, Radha Mitchell, Colin Salmon and Charlotte Riley.

Synopsis:

In London for the Prime Minister’s funeral, Mike Banning discovers a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders.

A sequel to Antoine Fuqua’s 2013 actioner Olympus Has Fallen was inevitable and London Has Fallen is an entertaining popcorn film – as long as you can ignore some blatant racism and terrorism exploitation. It’s not a bad film but it is nowhere near the entertaining heights of its predecessor which was simply “Die Hard in the White House”.

It’s three years later and secret service man Mike Banning (Butler) is considering resigning as he has a new baby on the way. Just before he can send the letter the British Prime Minister dies and all of the world’s leaders assemble in London for his funeral. »

Gerard Butler Feared Terrorism Film ‘London Has Fallen’ Would Strike Chord

2 March 2016 5:31 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Gerard Butler, who stars in the terrorism-centric action film “London Has Fallen,” was concerned that the nature of the movie may strike a sensitive chord in audiences, the actor admitted to Variety.

“At the end of the day, it’s a fictional movie. It’s entertainment,” Butler said at the Los Angeles premiere of the action-thriller, which is a sequel to 2013’s “Olympus Has Fallen.” “It’s about us winning. It’s about what happens when the shit hits the fan, and who stands up to face the challenge. It’s based on heroism and the good guys kicking –ss,” said the Scottish star, who reprises his role as U.S. Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the film.

“The movie certainly highlights our vulnerability all over the planet — I think we all feel that,” added Radha Mitchell, who returns as Leah Banning. “If anything, it draws attention to the »

London Has Fallen movie review: agitprop security theater

2 March 2016 6:53 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

A Nuremberg rally for 21st-century America. Pure terror porn: racist, jingoistic, thoroughly obnoxious. Donald Trump voters will love it. *sob* I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): hated the first movie

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

If only all those other stupid countries — you know, like Germany and the U.K. — could be as awesome as America. After the British prime minister dies suddenly and mysteriously, world leaders summoned to London for the funeral, allegedly “the most protected event on Earth,” come under terrorist attack. The only survivor among them is U.S. president Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart: My All American, I, Frankenstein), thanks to impossibly badass Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler: How to Train Your Dragon 2, Chasing Mavericks), even though Banning concedes that he is made of nothing more than “bourbon and poor choices.” (One wonders »

The series features the former “Parks and Recreation” star as an actor trying to build a career and a life in New York City. Ansari co-created the Universal TV series with Alan Yang.

The 10 episodes of the first season bowed Nov. 6 on Netflix. The renewal was expected, although Ansari told Variety last month that he wanted to take some time between seasons to “refill his head” with good material. The show drew critical praise for its blend of comedy and drama in tackling everything from the immigrant experience to the pitfalls of dating in the digital age.
