Why are Marvel's women all such buzzkills?

23 November 2014 1:30 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

"You just wanna suck the joy out of everything," Rocket Raccoon complains to Gamora early in Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket's certainly not being presented as the voice of reason here – he's sulking because Gamora refuses to let him blow up moons – but the exchange does hit on something that's been bothering me about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and more specifically its women.

In 2018, Marvel Studios will release their first female-led superhero movie in Captain Marvel, a long-awaited announcement that was understandably greeted with excitement earlier this month. Carol Danvers will be McU's third female superhero overall, following Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Zoe Saldana's Gamora, and my only wish is that she be written as something other than an unflappable, stony-faced buzzkill.

Yes, the female Guardian of the Galaxy is the most competent, smart and strong of the bunch, but she's also the least likeable, as polls »

20 November 2014 3:17 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Zoe Saldana knows a thing or two about kicking butt on the big screen. The pregnant Guardians of the Galaxy star can hold her own amongst the boys, too, but she doesn't want to be the only kickass woman on set. As she explained on an episode of Untold With Maria Menounos airing Thursday, "We need more women" in these strong, superhero roles! "What about an all action-packed female cast?" she asked. "What about that?" The 36-year-old actress pointed out the double standard when it comes to male and female nudity. While women can bare their breasts or show butt cracks within the confines of a PG-13 movie, the fellas cannot. Put a penis in the equation, and you've got »

James Gunn reveals his second choice for Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy

19 November 2014 9:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It was a movie that turned Chris Pratt into a household name and mega star, but there was a chance that he wasn’t going to play Star Lord in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Although the Parks and Recreation star did eventually take the role, Gunn has revealed who his second choice to play the part was.

“Glenn [Howerton] came along a little bit later, but there was a good chance that, if I didn’t cast Chris, that I would’ve cast Glenn Howerton in the role,” Gunn told GQ journalist Drew Magary.

If you’re unaware of that name, Glenn Howerton is one of the stars of TV’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

What do you make of this second choice? Would he have made a better or worse Star Lord than Pratt?

“Yo Soy Groot.”: Watch the Guardians Of The Galaxy’s Groot Limited Vocabulistics in 15 Languages

18 November 2014 8:44 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With Guardians of the Galaxy available today in Digital HD, Disney has released a featurette with Groot (Vin Diesel) saying his limited vocabulary of "I am Groot" in fifteen languages.  Rather than just have the same clip play again and again with a different language each time, this bit is really well put together as it has the line at various points of the movie, and then puts up a graphic of the sentence in the respective language.  I don't know this will spur anyone to buy the movie in Digital HD rather than just wait a few weeks for the Blu-ray (I admit it's tempting to buy the film now), but this piece is still entertaining. Hit the jump to watch the Guardians of the Galaxy featurette of Groot and his favorite phrase, and click here to watch our recent interview with director James Gunn.  The film hits shelves on December 9th, »

Trevor Hogg chats with Bobby Bukowski about a busy year of collaborating with four different filmmakers who each had a separate cinematic project…

One cannot accuse Bobby Bukowski of having a boring life as he went from studying Biochemistry with the intention of pursuing a medical career to a photographer’s assistant in Paris which resulted in him documenting a pilgrimage of sacred sites led by the Dalai Lama to being a bike messenger while obtaining his Master of Fine Arts degree to a cinematographer.  “It’s been a good life,” observes the native of New York City who has also taught at New York University TishAsia campus located in Singapore.  “The question that always arises from curious minds is, ‘Why do you do it that way?’  The academic query is a pertinent one.  “It’s good to remind oneself to throw everything up in the air and say, ‘What »

One of my favorite movies of 2014 is James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.  Loaded with great performances, an extremely funny script, and some fantastic action sequences, the movie blew past everyone's expectations to become one of the most popular movies of 2014.  As most of you know, the story follows five intergalactic misfits—Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)—as they set out to protect a powerful and mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).  For more on the film, read Matt’s review, or click here for all our previous coverage.
