How RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race Can Work Better the Second Time Around

22 July 2015 1:17 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

RuPaul announced that some of the best tuckers in the biz would be returning for another season of RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race. It's been three years since the first outing, which — no tea, no shade — resulted in one the most forgettable seasons ever (Sorry, Chad Michaels). While we'd rather just chow down on some sleeping pills and forget the season ever happened, we thought we'd revisit exactly what makes Drag Race so good, and how to make the second season of All Stars something that'll have us gagging. No teams! The major problem during the first go-around was the fact that each contestant got paired with another. And as much as we loved Rujubee, the format resulted in double eliminations that created an abbreviated season (six episodes, which maybe was the point) where the story lines didn't fully uncork. It felt distinctly unfair, for instance, when Pandora »

15 July 2015 7:30 PM, PDT | ChannelGuideMag | See recent ChannelGuideMag news »

Skin Wars season 2 episode 5 spans the emotions – starting with laughter and winding around to horror. The mini-challenge is to create a paint that makes RuPaul laugh. Cheryl Ann is a classically trained painter, not a stand-up comedian! Kyle’s also not sure about being funny, but thinks maybe going dirty will make Ru laugh. We’ll see about that. Lana’s paint is all about RuPaul, destroyer of dreams. He pops the balloons of artists dreams. You cannot do boom to Lana! You cannot! Rio goes all-in and creates the story of Cheryl Ann being thrown under the bus from … Continue reading →

Unscripted Television Led the Charge in Embracing Lgbt Community

15 June 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

When Caitlyn Jenner revealed her transgender truth to Diane Sawyer on primetime TV, Lgbt issues were thrown under an ever bigger spotlight than ever before. And while scripted series have sporadically featured gay characters, unscripted television embraced the Lgbt community a long time ago.

Certainly television, in general, is far from having evenly distributed representation, with GLAAD’s 2014 annual report of diversity in television calculating only 3.9% of primetime scripted series regulars as members of the Lgbt community.

On all sides of equation, scripted or otherwise, television is experiencing an influx of Lgbt awareness, including Jenner’s new docu-series “I Am Cait” on E!, Laverne Cox’s recurring role in the scripted series “Orange Is the New Black,” Oyxgen’s docu-series “The Prancing Elites Project,” above, which follows an African-American, gay and gender non-conforming dance team, and TLC’s upcoming show “I Am Jazz” about 14-year-old trans teenager Jazz Jennings.

Skin Wars season 2 premiere recap

10 June 2015 7:30 PM, PDT | ChannelGuideMag | See recent ChannelGuideMag news »

Since RuPaul is involved, I’ll be recapping the Skin Wars season 2 premiere. I watched Skin Wars last season and it was ok. Like most of the reality shows I watch, I enjoy seeing people with a skill set I completely do Not have compete. My one disappointment last season was seeing a lot of what looked like collages painted on people. It just wasn’t my thing. I preferred the body art where the models blended into the background. What I did enjoy about Skin Wars were the names of some of the contestants. Gear Boxxx. Mythica Von Griffyn. Dutch … Continue reading →

Feature Film Adaptation of Zombie Prom Musical In Development

9 June 2015 1:27 PM, PDT | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Equally atmospheric in strikingly different ways, the living dead and prom make for an awesome, creepy combination (see Gregg Bishop's Dance of the Dead), and they could come together once again via the in-the-works Zombie Prom feature film.

Variety reports that a feature film adaptation of the Zombie Prom musical is in development. The movie and TV rights to the horror comedy play that made its debut in 1993 have been picked up by Michael J. Roth and Steve Longi.

Vince Marcello, who wrote and directed the 2006 short film adaptation of Zombie Prom, will direct the full-length feature from a screenplay he'll write with creative collaborator Mark Landry (the duo co-penned Disney's Teen Beach Movie).

Similar to Creepshow, Zombie Prom was inspired by EC Comics from the 1950s. For those unfamiliar with the off-Broadway play and its short film adaptation (which co-starred RuPaul as Miss Strict), here's the short's official synopsis (via zombiepromthemovie. »

RuPaul: 'Drag is dangerous. We are making fun of everything'

3 June 2015 10:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Riding high with his reality show Drag Race, the star tells us why he will never be mainstream, the importance of finding your tribe, and the secret to being a ‘badass bitch’

Before he was the world’s most famous drag queen, RuPaul Charles was a punk in a downtown Atlanta band called Wee Wee Pole. There’s an internet-famous prom picture of him in 1983, when he was 23 and dressed as if he’d just stepped off the set of the David Bowie movie Labyrinth. He was there as the date of his bandmate’s sister, but, he tells me, he dressed like that even when he was at the same school. “I was always RuPaul. Always. Even as a kid, I would dress up in my sisters’ clothes, in cowboy outfits, in sailor outfits. I loved putting on different costumes.”

The problem with the new winner of 'RuPaul's Drag Race'

2 June 2015 10:40 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The tepid seventh season of "RuPaul's Drag Race" came to a close last night in decadent fashion. The three finalists, Ginger Minj, Pearl, and Violet Chachki sashayed for Ru's final blessing. Who won? Check below. We'll tell you why it's annoying.  Though Ginger Minj was the favorite going into the finale thanks to her wild showmanship and electrifying impersonation of Adele, the crown went to Violet Chachki. Take a look at her season highlight reel. In seasons past, contestants won "RuPaul's Drag Race" for exhibiting a range of charismatic traits. Season six winner Bianca Del Rio was snide, ferocious, and whip-smart. Season five winner Jinkx Monsoon was kooky, kitschy, and slyly carnal. Violet Chachki, meanwhile, is certainly a glamorous and compelling stage-walker, but she's exhibited none of the comic verve that has made so many other notable contestants (Sharon Needles, Alaska, Adore Delano, Willam) such indelible characters. In fact, Violet »

Yikes! Amber Rose Wears Unflattering Nude Velour Jumpsuit

Amber Rose's street style is bringing us back to the '00s ... and not in a good way! The model was spotted out with friends and her son, Sebastian Thomaz, in Los Angeles on Wednesday.  Rose showed off her famous figure in a curve-hugging, nude velour jumpsuit for her casual day spent running errands. Amber completed her outfit with giant black sunglasses and black and gold studded Guiseppe Zanotti sandals.  Normally the 31-year-old beauty looks stunning on and off the red carpet ... but we're not loving the mother-of-one's latest look -- this tracksuit should have been left in the early 2000s, right?!  The blonde beauty made headlines earlier this month, when she proved that her famous backside was the real deal by letting E!'s "Good Work" host, RuPaul, cop a feel.    What do you think about Amber's latest look? It’s Hello Kitty Hour on RuPaul’s Drag Race!

With only a handful of episodes left in its seventh season, RuPaul’s Drag Race cranks up the competition by asking the contestants to tap into their creative sides yet again, and design looks centered around everybody’s favorite cutie cat, Hello Kitty. But another clothing-design challenge leaves some of the queens with a crisis of confidence and ultimately sends a frontrunner home.Hello Kitty GirlMuch like last week’s nods to both the Real Housewives franchise and Dancing With the Stars, this week’s main challenge seemed like a page straight out of the Project Runway playbook, with the queens designing an elegant look made entirely out of repurposed Hello Kitty merchandise. As if that wasn't enough, they also have to design a second surprise look creating a new bestest friend for the overgrown cat-girl. The results are mixed, and for good reason.
