Verdict? The film of August Wilson’s play is absorbing, intense. If we rate by quality of writing, acting skill, and the craft of direction, Denzel Washington’s film betters most of its fellow Best Picture nominees. It’s also something positive for the arts, a ‘black experience’ play that can’t be pigeonholed as merely black- themed. The appeal of its compelling characters goes beyond racial boundaries. Viola Davis did win a well- deserved Oscar, and this is fine work from one end to the other.

Dragon Tattoo Reboot Eyes Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman

14 March 2017 4:59 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sony Pictures confirmed yesterday that it is moving forward with the new adaptation The Girl in the Spider's Web, a novel by David Lagercrantz which continues the iconic Millennium Trilogy centering on Lisbeth Salander, written by the late Stieg Larsson. The studio has set an October 5, 2018 release date for the adaptation, with production set to begin this September under the direction of Fede Alvarez. The production is currently looking for the right actress to play Lisbeth Salander. Now, a report has surfaced that two A-list actresses are already in the running, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman.

Variety's studio insiders claim that both Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are currently in the mix, as director Fede Alvarez starts meeting with prospective talent. Ironically, Scarlett Johansson was also up for the Lisbeth Salander role for Sony's English-language reboot of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which ultimately went to Rooney Mara, and »

Director Fede Alvarez Responds To Replacing Rooney Mara In ‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web’

The movie world is still reverberating with the news, long expected and now confirmed, that “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” is moving forward without David Fincher or the cast he assembled for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” As one of our commenters recently asked, “Has there ever been an actress nominated for an Academy Award for a role and then the studio decides they don’t want her for the sequel?” However, for anyone familiar with with drama behind Fincher’s ‘Tattoo,’ they’ll know that producers Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin never wanted Rooney Mara for role, and it appears her growing fame and position as one of Hollywood’s finest actresses hasn’t changed that position.

‘Dragon Tattoo’ Finally Gets a Follow-up, but without Fincher, Mara

Plus: SXSW reviews and perfect shots.

You’d think someone like David Fincher would have proven their case for autonomy by now. You’d think that by hiring someone as stylistic and accomplished as Fincher, the studio would understand that the best way to help him make the best movie possible is to get out of his way and just let the man work. It’s merely a case of looking at Alien 3 versus Se7en: in the case of the former, the studio meddled, asserted control, and as a result the film was an utter disaster that Fincher doesn’t even like having his name attached to; in the case of the latter, he put his foot down, made the movie the way he wanted it made, and as a result he became an overnight sensation and a powerful new presence in cinema.

But when it came time for the American remake of the international »

Scarlett Johansson & Natalie Portman In The Mix To Play Lisbeth Salander In ‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web’

It looks like “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” will give co-producers Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin a chance to make the Lisbeth Salander movie they wanted to do, before butting heads with David Fincher on “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Almost every aspect of that movie, from the budget to the marketing, was a constant battle, but the friction arguably first started over the casting of Rooney Mara.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Sequel Will Arrive in October 2018, Featuring an All-New Cast

13 March 2017 11:40 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After years of rumors regarding who, exactly, will be in a sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — or if it will happen at all — Sony Pictures have now officially confirmed their plans. As reported last fall, Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez will be staying in business with the company to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web, which Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises) adapted from David Lagercrantz, but don’t expect to see any familiar faces.

Sony has announced today that the ensemble for this follow-up will be “entirely new” and a worldwide search has commenced to take over the Lisbeth Salander role, last played by Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace. There had previously been rumors that Alicia Vikander was circling the part, but she has long been unattached, so with this global search underway, perhaps we’ll see some new talent fill out this cast. »

Author Mark Harris on Turning ‘Five Came Back’ Into a Netflix Documentary

“My father had been a World War II veteran — he died when I was young,” Harris recalls. “As I got older, I realized I had ignored his war stories. And I came to realize World War II and World War II movies were my weak spot, my big gap in American history.”

His first instincts were as a film historian, peeling back the layers of five men changed by global conflict, who created vital work on the front lines and then came back to America to produce the deepest, most profound work of their careers. But »

‘Moonlight’ Postmortem: How To Win Best Picture in 5 (Not So) Easy Steps

Let’s talk about the biggest news of an unforgettable Oscar night — and it’s got nothing to do with the Twitter-happy accountant who apparently gave Warren Beatty the wrong envelope. Here’s the real story: A $1.5 million gay, African-American, coming-of-age movie won Best Picture.

It’s the first gay movie to grab the big prize, one that was denied “Brokeback Mountain” a decade ago. It’s the first Best Picture winner with an all-black cast. It also showed that when a small-scale indie is involved, guild wins (“La La Land” won the PGA,”Hidden Figures” took SAG Ensemble) are no longer reliable Oscar predictors.

And never underestimate the potential of the underdog to come from behind (See: “12 Years a Slave,” “Spotlight,” “Argo”). This year’s passion vote was split among three movies: “La La Land,” “Moonlight,” and “Manchester By the Sea.”

Trailer for Spielberg's Docu-Series 'Five Came Back' About WWII Films

28 February 2017 5:14 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Western civilization was at stake, and we're going to fight until we win." Netflix has unveiled a trailer for a new three-part documentary series titled Five Came Back. I'm breaking our rules to share this trailer, because it's a docu-series about filmmaking (and filmmakers) and specifically about WWII movies, which is one of my favorite genres. Five Came Back is executive produced by Steven Spielberg (also interviewed in the doc), Scott Rudin and Barry Diller, featuring narration by Meryl Streep. The title refers to "five" filmmakers who helped change the way the American people saw and understood World War II. Those five filmmakers were: John Ford, George Stevens, John Huston, William Wyler, and Frank Capra. The footage in this looks amazing, and I'm super excited to watch this series when it airs in March. Check this out below. Here's the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's docu-series Five Came Back, »

Netflix has made available the trailer for Five Came Back, a documentary about American directors John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens who served their country during World War II and brought the truth of the war back to the people through their films and documentaries. The documentary series is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Scott Rudin and Barry Diller and directed by Laurent Bouzeraeu. Watch the trailer below.

Shepherding the series to follow the careers of these directors throughout the documentary several modern directors: Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass and Lawrence Kasdan. Together with narrator Meryl Streep, they’ll follow the careers of these filmmakers and how they helped change Hollywood through their work and military service.

“These filmmakers, at that time, had a responsibility in that what they were putting into the world would be taken as truth,” said Bouzeraeu. »
