Who knew, when Brandon Routh took on the alien Kal-El in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," that fans would split so divisively? The 2006 movie, which paid homage to the Richard Donner "Superman" movies without completely updating the franchise the way Christopher Nolan did with "Batman Begins," grossed $391 million worldwide off strong reviews for a genre sequel. But it cost more than $232 million. Warners felt it could have performed better with more action and a powerful villain--and no Superman kid. So Singer was taken off the franchise. The debate continued to rage about what Warner Bros. should do with the DC Comics super-hero. Fans clamored all over the web for a complete reboot. Warner Bros. motion picture chief Jeff Robinov struggled with what to do. As the last movie didn't break the mold --Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was very been there, done that--and wound up in some kind of middle limbo, »

Before the doors of the Irving Convention Center even opened on Saturday, it was very evident that Dallas Comic-Con is no longer just a local Texas event. Just by reading the convention's Facebook page, you could see people sharing their stories of how far they had traveled to meet their favorite celebrities. Many were from out of state or distant corners of the Lone Star State.
Let's just get the negative out of the way so we can get to the good points. Yes, there were a few cancellations. One was felt more than the others. The first day of the event, Nathan Fillion's representatives contacted Comic-Con management and told them the actor wouldn't be attending because of health reasons.
Since the Comic-Con personnel can't just say it out of tact and professional reason, let me do the talking for them. Anyone who drives or flies thousands of miles »

Even superheroes need a makeover sometimes. It's happened before, with Batman and Iron Man and plenty of other comic book characters; even Superman isn't immune. For the upcoming "Man of Steel," director Zack Snyder and co-writers David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan made sure to distance their movie from previous installments by not putting "Superman" in the title, and giving the movie some technological tweaks and a grittier vibe. Goyer explained by in an Empire podcast a few weeks ago. "We always knew we would be using the Superman glyph or the shield as we call it. But 'Man Of Steel' was also supposed to represent our take, which was he's a man, but he's not made of flesh and blood, metaphorically he's a man of steel. So that was sort of the whole thing wrapped up in a nutshell." It doesn't hurt that a 2006 attempt to bring »

The long-awaited Superman reboot, Man of Steel, is released next month and fans of the iconic Kryptonian hero are chomping at the bit to feast their eyes on this new incarnation of their favourite character (portrayed in this instance by British actor Henry Cavill, who will be supported by a stellar ensemble cast that includes Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner and Michael Shannon).
After the forgettable disappointment that was 2006′s Superman Returns, starring Brandon Routh as the titular hero, comic book enthusiasts around the world have been waiting in eager anticipation to finally get another Superman movie worthy of the name.
Not since the days of Christopher Reeve has there been a Superman movie worth re-watching - and sadly even that franchise got a bit silly by the end (Richard Pryor, anyone?).
With that in mind, here’s hoping that this upcoming reboot can set the world »

I believe this latest one-sheet for visionary director Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel is the third to feature this weekend alone. Each one (find the other two here, and here) has captured the majestic spirit of the iconic comic-book character Kal-El, who will learn his calling as the super-powered saviour of mankind following the arrival of Michael Shannon’s fellow Kryptonian General Zod. A vicious villain, who along with a foxy femme fatale Faora, is looking to crush our beloved planet.
Man Of Steel will swoop into cinemas from 14th June and is led by Henry Cavill, taking on the role previously played by Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh on the big-screen. Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Christopher Meloni and Antje Traue also co-star.

This year, at the Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Entertainment Weekly and the American Cinematheque teamed up for the inaugural CapeTown Film Festival, and hopefully this festival is here to stay. The past week, I’ve gone to a few of the screenings, joining the hordes of fanboys and girls cheering for their favorite picture(s).
The lineup has been stellar, featuring classics both old and new. On Tuesday, EW staged an early screening of Iron Man 3 before the U.S. premiere date of May 3rd, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in attendance. The next day was Edgar Wright Day, with Shaun Of The Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World being shown, with Edgar Wright joined by stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brandon Routh, Satya Bhabha, and Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. On Thursday, John Carpenter’s The Thing terrified the sold out crowd with a 35 mm print, »

Cult filmmaker Edgar Wright did double-duty last night at Entertainment Weekly’s CapeTown Film Fest, showing off his zombie romcom Shaun of the Dead and his romantic rock-gamer odyssey Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. (Wright also sharedsome footage for his upcoming projects, including an eye-popping test reel for Ant-Man.) Before the Pilgrim screening, Wright brought some friends onstage: actors Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brandon Routh, and Satya Bhabha, and Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley. Below, the coolest tidbits from their chat:

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for about ten years with earplugs in, a rather fetching blindfold and a phone without 3G, you’ll know that Man Of Steel will hit cinemas in just over a month. Warner Bros. are continuing to churn out marketing material just on the off-chance you haven’t seen any and today, a new TV spot and poster have arrived online for your viewing pleasure.
The film’s most recent trailer debuted a couple of weeks ago and blew the previous one out of the water. This latest TV spot, clocking in at 30 seconds is the bonsai’d version. It includes Russell Crowe’s voiceover narration as Jor-El (Superman’s Papa) and a plethora of shots of people looking up at what appears to be a plane. But we know….it’s Superman. Just about. There’s no new footage here but it »

We've already reported on the ton of photo goodies inside the latest issue of Empire; now the interview-y bits from the magazine's "Man of Steel" coverage are making their way online and they offer some new (possibly spoilery) insight into what's shaping up to be this summer's movie-to-beat.
The magazine contains interviews with a number of people involved in bringing Superman to the big screen again, including Clark Kent himself, Henry Cavill, and Antje Traue, who plays the Kryptonian powerhouse Faora. It also contains some new information about the planet Krypton, which puts the opening scenes of the latest trailer in context.
Krypton's final fate is revealed by the magazine. Apparently an "impossibly large and consuming sun is about to consume them all." So even though the opening shots of the trailer looked pretty war-torn, that's most likely Kryptonians freaking out about the all-consuming sun. The magazine »

After being cast as Superman in Bryan Singer's 2006 "Superman Returns," Brandon Routh fought for a career in the film industry, but ultimately faded away. Now, in a new interview with Empire magazine, "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill said that he hopes the same thing won't happen to him. "I certainly haven't got my mind set on failure. That is a bad approach - you want to strive for success," he explained. When asked what his dream role would be (outside of Superman), Cavill said that he would love to play James Bond one day. "What a wonderful challenge to follow up Daniel Craig. He has set the bar so high." "Superman Returns" grossed only $391 million on a $270 million budget, which was a loss for the studio after factoring in the marketing budget. And despite having a decent 76% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, fans complained that the film lacked action, »

You would have thought that playing Superman would have opened a lot of doors for Brandon Routh. Instead, his career never seemed to really take off after Bryan Singer's ill-fated take on the DC superhero, despite memorable appearances in the likes of Chuck, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. "I certainly haven't got my mind set on failure," he said when asked by Empire Magazine if he's worried "about pulling a Brandon Routh and disappearing" after the release of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. "That is a bad approach - you want to strive for success." As for what he has lined up next, his schedule is clear, but James Bond is still on his mind. "What a wonderful challenge to follow up Daniel Craig. He has set the bar so high." What would you guys like to see Cavill do after Man of Steel? »

The new Man of Steel trailer landed late Tuesday afternoon with a sonic boom that caused a seismic shift in fan anticipation. Though eagerly awaited, many have remained skeptical, and somewhat uneasy, about this so-called 'reboot' from director Zack Snyder. He did, after all, make what some call the most disappointing comic book adaptation of all time with 2009's Watchmen. And Warner Bros., the studio behind Man of Steel, royally whiffed it with their more recent DC Comics adaptation Green Lantern. Not to mention, there's still the mild stench of Superman Returns wafting through the air like a patchouli fart, causing fear that we could be in store for another snooze fest that fails at showing exactly what Kal-El is capable of on planet earth.

Lex Luthor's LexCorp tower will appear in upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel.
The latest trailer for Zack Snyder's comic book reboot features a brief glimpse of the glass skyscraper as missiles cut through the Metropolis skyline.
[Click image above to view in high-resolution]
Luthor has been Superman's primary antagonist since he first appeared in a 1940 issue of Action Comics. The character has previously been portrayed as a scientist, white-collar criminal, corporate CEO and - in one guise - the Us President.
Gene Hackman played the villain in Christopher Reeve's Superman films, while Kevin Spacey faced off against Brandon Routh in 2006's Superman Returns.
It is unclear if the appearance of LexCorp in the trailer is an Easter Egg for fans or a hint suggesting Superman's arch-nemesis will appear in person in the movie.

Zack Snyder has revealed that Man of Steel won't feature Superman's Achilles' heel Kryptonite.
The green radioactive element from the superhero's homeworld was introduced in the Adventures of Superman radio serial in the early '40s and has featured in subsequent comics and Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh's screen incarnations of the character.
"I'll be honest with you, there's no Kryptonite in the movie," director Snyder told EW. "It's all emotional Kryptonite."
Cavill added of his interpretation of Kal-El: "Although he is not susceptible to the frailties of mankind, he is definitely susceptible to the emotional frailties."
Man of Steel, featuring Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon, will open in cinemas on June 14.

Superman II is perhaps best known for spawning the iconic line "kneel before Zod", spoken by Terence Stamp's Kryptonian warlord General Zod, who heads up a trio of superhumans intent on ruling the world.
