Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie T. Usher set for Son of Shaft

7 hours ago | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It looks like director Tim Story’s Shaft reboot won’t be a reboot after all, as Variety is reporting that Samuel L. Jackson is in talks to reprise his role as John Shaft II (nephew of the original John Shaft) from the 2000 movie, with Jessie T. Usher (Survivor’s Remorse, Independence Day: Resurgence) set to play Jackson’s character’s son.

The first Shaft was released in 1971 and saw Richard Roundtree portraying the titular black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks. Roundtree would reprise the role for Shaft’s Big Score and Shaft in Africa, as well as cameoing alongside Samuel L. Jackson in the 2000 film. As yet, there’s no word whether Roundtree will also make an appearance in Story’s new film.

Son of Shaft is set to go down the action-comedy route and aims to “reinvigorate the franchise with a focus »

'Independence Day: Resurgence' Star Jessie T. Usher Is 'Son of Shaft'

18 August 2017 8:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

There's a new Shaft. Can ya dig it?  In the tradition of the franchise since the last installment, we're getting another soft reboot that's also actually a sequel to what's come before. The film series began back in 1971 with the blaxploitation classic Shaft, starring Richard Roundtree as the titular detective, John Shaft. Two sequels arrived over the next two years (Shaft's Big Score! and Shaft in Africa), followed by a TV series also starring the same actor.    In 2000, we got a new movie, also titled Shaft, which starred Samuel L. Jackson as the titular detective, John Shaft. But not the same John Shaft. This private dick was the nephew of the original and Roundtree reprised his role briefly once again. The reboot was a...

Sources tell Variety that Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to reprise his role of the titular character with “Survivor’s Remorse” star Jessie T. Usher in talks to play Jackson’s son in the film.

Tim Story is directing a script from “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.

The original 1971 version — based on Ernest Tidyman’s novel — starred Richard Roundtree as a smooth private detective who’s hired by a drug lord to find his kidnapped daughter. The character became a pop culture icon and the theme song, written by Isaac Hayes, went on to win an Oscar.

Can You Dig It? Shaft Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

Shaft (1971) screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 21st and 2nd) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’  Midnight series.

“Who’s the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks?”

Shaft was not the first Blaxploitation film but it is the most influential and one of the most memorable. A workaday script was launched into cultural orbit by the charismatic performance of Richard Roundtree and the unforgettable theme song by the late Isaac Hayes. The importance of this movie is not that it was hugely successful (although it was), but that it was among the first produced and performed by a crew and cast that was predominantly black. It proved that there was a significant audience for movies that represented black culture on its own terms and treated the audience with respect. Importantly, Shaft isn’t a »

Brendan Fraser: the lost movie star?

11 June 2017 2:16 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Jun 15, 2017

Brendan Fraser seemed on the verge of being a major movie star in the late 1990s. But it never came to be. We look at why…

I remember going in to watch 1994’s Airheads at the cinema, at the time tempted to do so more by the name of Michael Lehmann on the end credits than Adam Sandler and Brendan Fraser above the title. Steve Buscemi’s presence helped too, of course. But Lehmann had, after all, come to the project off the back of the unfairly maligned Hudson Hawk, and also, this is the man who gave the world Heathers. Can’t grumble with that.

I’d not seen Brendan Fraser on the big screen before, although even by this stage, he’d earned some currency. Encino Man – California Man in the UK – had overcome savage reviews to prove a decent hit. School Ties, that I »

Blu-ray Review – Willie Dynamite (1974)

Willie Dynamite, 1974.

Directed by Gilbert Moses.

Starring Roscoe Orman, Diana Sands, Thalmas Rasulala, Joyce Walker, George Murdock, and Juanita Brown.

Synopsis :

Willie Dynamite is the flashiest pimp in New York with all the glitz and glamour that the high life can offer. But can a tough social worker help change his mercenary ways?

Less well known than Blaxploitation big hitters such as Shaft and Superfly, Willie Dynamite is nevertheless well worth checking out for anyone looking for some classic 70’s pimp action street level cinema. With all the garish and wild gangster outfits, sweet funk and soul sounds and deadpan humour associated with the genre, this is an entertaining romp through urban grit laced with a jewel encrusted edge.

Following the titular lead as he prowls around the city dressed in the finest threads that prostitution can buy, the film is an interesting mix of social commentary and crime action. »

Willie Dynamite, 1974.

Directed by Gilbert Moses.

Starring Roscoe Orman, Diana Sands, Thalmus Rasulala, Joyce Walker, George Murdock, and Albert Hall.

Synopsis:

Willie Dynamite is the number two pimp in the city who is desperate to be number one, and a prostitute-turned-social worker is determined to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Michael Jai White’s 2009 comedy Black Dynamite is a brilliant spoof on the whole blaxploitation genre, taking in the bling, the street dialect, copious amounts of totally gratuitous (but extremely welcome nonetheless) nudity, over-the-top characters, a kung-fu fight with Richard Nixon and intrusive boom mics galore, all presented with a knowing wink from everyone involved. If you haven’t seen it then it is highly recommended that you do, if only to marvel at a 21st century comedy that doesn’t rely on being gross for laughs. With that in mind, you would hope that Willie Dynamite – a 1974 blaxploitation »

The latest movie reboot of 1971’s Shaft has taken some steps forward, with the reveal that Tim Story has been hired to direct the new film.

Story sprung to prominence when he directed the two Fantastic Four movies in the 2000s, before enjoying more box office joys with Ride Along and Ride Along 2. A third Ride Along movie is also said to be in development.

However, Story now has to juggle Shaft on his docket somewhere, with the new film rumoured to be a complete reboot, severing any ties to the Richard Roundtree-headlined original films, or John Singleton’s 2000 continuation, that starred Samuel L Jackson.

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, it is said that “the idea is to reinvigorate the franchise with a focus on the son of the cool private eye who always finds himself navigating the gray terrain between the law and organized crime in New York City.”
