First official images from Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained

28 April 2012 3:26 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following the release of the teaser poster a couple of weeks back, Entertainment Weekly have now got their hands on the first official images from Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Spaghetti Western tribute, Django Unchained.

First up is a shot of Jamie Foxx (Ray) as the eponymous Django (whom Foxx describes as "Richard Roundtree meets Clint Eastwood"), along with his mentor, the German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, played by Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds)...

And secondly comes a look at Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception) as the villainous plantation owner Calvin Candie...

The pre-Civil War set tale sees the freed slave Django joining forces with Schultz to search for his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington; Fantastic Four), a path which leads them to Candie's infamous 'Candyland' plantation, where slaves are groomed to battle each other for sport.

Joining Foxx, Waltz, DiCaprio and Washington in the cast are Sacha Baron Cohen (The Dictator), Samuel L. Jackson »

Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Django Unchained': Positively devilish

26 April 2012 12:11 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

In Quentin Tarantino's upcoming movie, "Django Unchained," Leonardo DiCaprio plays a dastardly plantation owner who snatches Jamie Foxx's wife, played by Kerry Washington, setting off all sorts of Tarantino-esque violence ably aided by co-star Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds").

In a new photo posted by EW, DiCaprio -- as deranged plantation owner Calvin Candie -- weilds a hammer and enjoys a little tobacco while his Rhett Butler-esque hair and devilish facial hair give off big-time bad boy (man) vibes. Candie, whose plantation is called "Candie Land," likes to make his slaves fight each other to the death.

The alt-Western centers on Foxx, who struggles to break out of his slave status to go in search of Washington, who has been sold off to another plantation.

Foxx describes his character as, "Richard Roundtree meets Clint Eastwood."

'Django Unchained': Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx In Quentin Tarantino Film (Photos)

26 April 2012 12:04 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

The first images of Leonardo DiCaprio as an evil plantation owner and Jamie Foxx as a badass slave in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" have arrived thanks to EW -- and they don't disappoint. Foxx describes his cowboy character as a combination of two of the most iconic anti-heroes of all time: “Richard Roundtree [Shaft] meets Clint Eastwood.” DiCaprio plays a goateed, hammer-wielding heavy named Calvin Candie who likes to make his slaves fight to the death, a character that might give even "Inglourious Basterds" bad guy Christoph Waltz a run for his money in the villainy department. “Candie is a business man who owns a plantation called Candie Land, and that's where my wife ends up being,” Foxx says. To find her, “we have to get in good with Candie, by me playing a valet for Christoph's character.” Waltz plays a German Bounty hunter named Schultz whom Django recruits to »

First ‘Django Unchained’ Images: Cowboys in Tarantino’s Old South

26 April 2012 8:02 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When word first leaked out that Quentin Tarantino’s next film is going to be a western revenge throwback (titled Django Unchained) following a slave-turned-bounty hunter on a crusade to liberate his wife from a remorseless plantation owner in the pre-Civil War South, it was immediately apparent just what a lightning rod for controversy the Pulp Fiction filmmaker’s latest piece of pastiche cinema will be.

Django himself (Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx) discussed just that in a recent interview, describing his onscreen alter ego as a mashup between Shaft (Richard Roundtree) and the Man with No Name (Clint Eastwood). Considering the genres those two characters are defined by – blaxploitation and spaghetti western, two of Tarantino’s favorites – that sounds just about right.

Joining Foxx in Django Unchained is fellow Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz as a German bounty hunter (not ...

A surprisingly strong year at the box office will surely end on a high note when celebrated director Quentin Tarantino unleashes his rousing Western Django Unchained on Christmas Day. The first two official stills from this action-packed revenge tale have been released, offering a look at Jamie Foxx as the title character alongside Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), whom trains the former slave in the art of bounty hunting. We also get our first look at Leonardo DiCaprio, working for the first time with Quentin Tarantino, as Calvin Candy, the proprietor of a slave ranch and brothal who has Django's wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) under his control. Check out this wild bunch as they head towards their deadly destinies.

Jamie Foxx does think the movie will be controversial.

"Oh, hell yeah. You kidding me? There's a beautiful way [Quentin Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It's mindblowing. You've never heard it this way. »

26 April 2012 4:40 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It’s finally here. After shooting for a few months our only glimpse at Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained was a few set photos. Now we’ve got two official stills which show off our two leads, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz as well as their adversary, Leonardo DiCaprio as evil slave owner Calvin Candie. They come from EW, where Foxx describes his character of Django as a mix between Shaft’s Richard Roundtree and Clint Eastwood.” They go on to talk about how controversial the movie will be, but how Tarantino found a “beautiful way” for the “characters to talk to each other.” Foxx said, “It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way. You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.” Check out the photos above and below.

First Look: Two photos revealed from Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' -- Exclusive

26 April 2012 3:00 AM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

The song “Unchain My Heart” meant something very different when Jamie Foxx re-created it in 2004’s Ray, but you could argue the title applies in a strange and more sinister way in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming revenge western Django Unchained.

The bond Foxx wants to break this time around is not a bad romance, but something far uglier and more painful: his slave status in the pre-Civil War South, which is the obstacle preventing him from going in search of his sold-off wife, played by Kerry Washington.

After the jump, Entertainment Weekly debuts the first two photos from the movie, »

At this Los Angeles film festival, movie buffs wallow unashamedly in nostalgia and the golden era of Hollywood, and get to meet the odd star of the classic films being screened

Hollywood Boulevard was closed to traffic and the crowds were gathering outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre to spot the stars – Peter O'Toole, Tippi Hedren and Mickey Rooney among them – as they walked the red carpet and filed past hundreds of famous foot and handprints for the premiere of Gene Kelly's 1951 film, An American in Paris. Fans cheer and cameras flash.

At the TCM Classic Film Festival stars from yesteryear rub shoulders with paying guests who made their way past the pair of giant Chinese Ming Heavens dogs guarding the main entrance of the 85-year-old picture palace.

Richard Roundtree, Aaron D. Spears Join Gabrielle Union In "Single Black Female"

21 March 2012 11:57 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Last we wrote about this project from Bet and husband/wife team, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, Gabrielle Union had been cast as the lead in the new drama series called Single Black Female. Bet has given a pilot order to what will be an hour-long series from the Akils, which will follow the professional and private family life of a black woman, who is also the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show host. Announced earlier today, joining Union in the series will be Aaron D. Spears (The Bold & The Beautiful) and Richard Roundtree, who will both co-star opposite Gabrielle. It's now known that the character Union plays will be named Mary Jane (curious if that was an arbitrary choice of names, or if there's some meaning behind it; I immediately think of Rick James' song of the same name, and his isn't the only one). Aaron Spears will play Mark Bradley, »

Opposing Force (aka Hell Camp) DVD Review!

The Movie Pool joins the first-ever Opposing Force (aka Hell Camp) DVD!

The Set-up

An overzealous military camp commander (Anthony Zerbe) abuses a female soldier (Lisa Eichhorn) during torture training, leading her comrade (Tom Skerritt) to take serious measures to stop his brutality. Also stars Richard Roundtree.

Directed by: Eric Karson

The Delivery

Originally released under the title Hell Camp, this 1986 military drama pre-dates G.I. Jane by over a decade, but it was more brutal and not nearly as stylized as the later Demi Moore debacle. Golden Globe nominee Lisa Eichhorn stars as Casey, an Air Force pilot who volunteers for  a brutal survival training exercise, only to fall victim to a sadistic commander named Becker, played by Anthony Zerbe. Becker decides Casey must learn the harsh realities of being a possible prisoner of war, so he rapes her "for her own good."

Universal Vault Share: “Earthquake” (1975) Matte

9 February 2012 7:27 PM, PST | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

The visual effects work of Universal matte department head Albert Whitlock has been seen in over 130 films, including the 1975 disaster outing Earthquake, directed by Mark Robson. The film, starring Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Lorne Greene, and Richard Roundtree, told the story of various Los Angeles citizens dealing with the titular natural disaster shaking their city to ruins.

Key to the film’s depth and awe inspiring scope was the art of Whitlock and his team, bringing Los Angeles it’s knees with shocking realism. Continuing their purging of the vaults in celebration of their 100th Anniversary this year, Universal has just shared the matte painting below, one of 70 created for the film, and seen here for the first time publicly.
