hollywoodnews.com: The “Awards Season Screener” of choice from family members visiting over the holiday weekend was Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” (The second most popular was Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse,” followed by “The Artist.”)
All three went over very well – an extremely unscientific poll, which is influenced by overeating and alcohol – but “Loud” was a devastator. I now know at what moment I need to get up and get the tissue boxes ready, because the tears are about to flow.
It worked every time. And now that I’ve seen it a number of times, I’m even more confident throwing my support behind Daldry’s powerful and moving drama. Mainly, I’ve come to realize the precise structure of Eric Roth’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel. Mysteries about The Renter (Max von Sydow), the key, the swing »

In Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close,” the author tells the story of Oskar Schell, a school-age boy who grapples with the passing of his father in the 9/11 attacks. Adapting such difficult material was never going to be easy, and with Stephen Daldry’s new film of the same title, the obstacles were twofold. One must have fidelity not only to the source material, but to the tragedies of the event itself. Gathering together to talk with the press in New York City recently, the cast and filmmaker related the importance of being true to the emotions that still linger from that fateful September day. “The greatest challenge was to control the emotion of it,” says screenwriter Eric Roth, the veteran scribe behind “Forrest Gump,” “The Insider” and “Munich.” “Obviously, it’s a personal story, but there’s also the horror of 9/11. I think the movie captures more than the. »

Remember those trailers for Stephen Daldry‘s adaptation of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close that we all cringed at? Well, how could you forget – they stick with you in a very off-putting way. Disappointingly, most of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close replicates that experience. Daldry’s a fine filmmaker, and with a script from Eric Roth – a writer who’s delivered his fair share of modern classics – one should expect more from their collaboration. What their combination delivered is a mostly stilted, heavy-handed, and, quite often, wrongly manipulative experience. I won’t dismiss the film as being “blatant Oscar bait,” seeing as it’s well-intentioned and earnest. Unfortunately, those intentions, in execution, feel false and empty. A real heart isn’t here to grab onto; only an artificial and cold one. The film constantly says how Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) affects all these people he meets, but it never shows it. There »

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won’t play in front of my eyes for another 22 hours or so, but David Fincher is just about ready to move on. Those familiar with the director’s penchant for keeping a busy schedule don’t need to hear that, but even a devout fan — such as yours truly — was surprised by all the projects that came up in an interview with MTV.
First up, he confirmed some general interest in filming Tattoo‘s two sequels, The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, saying that he especially loves “the notion of really talking about sex trafficking, and what Anonymous is doing and stuff with child porn.” Though he approached the first “as a one off,” he sees the potential for a franchise. Audiences must decide if they actually want to see one.

With an absolute sensitivity to the people and events surrounding 2001's terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is an emotionally staggering adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name. Director Stephen Daldry has taken Eric Roth's (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) screenplay and crafted a film that will have you welling up early and often as it not only manages to be respectful of the events and the millions of lives that were affected, but it's done in such a way that the tears are earned rather than merely the result of the tragic event at the film's core.
Set one year after the September 11th attacks, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close follows the story of young Oskar Schell (played to perfection by Thomas Horn) after he lost his father (Tom Hanks) in one of the Towers. Oskar held »

Judging by the first and second trailers that we’ve seen for Tom Hanks’ next film, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, we’re certainly due for a powerful cinema experience when this comes to our screens early next year.
Directed by Stephen Daldry (The Reader, Billy Elliot), the film is an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel of the same name by Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), led by the young Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, and Sandra Bullock, with a supporting cast that includes Max von Sydow, John Goodman, Jeffrey Wright, and Viola Davis.
“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” tells the story of one young boy’s journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of the tragicevents of September 11. Eleven-year-old Oskar Schell is an exceptional child: amateur inventor, Francophile, pacifist. And after finding a mysterious key that belonged to his father, »

It's that time of year again, and the award buzz is starting to heat up. The nominations are in for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and while not all my nominations made it, the vast majority of them did, which makes me feel pretty good about how the year is going to turn out for all the award shows.
Take a look at the full press release below, and mark your calendar for January 12th! Let me know your thoughts, and if anything should have been nominated that wasn't. My picks to win are in bold, and I'll let you know if I nominated anything that didn't make the cut.

Award season is officially around the corner, which means the nominations are coming in droves now. The Critics Choice nominees feature some of the same contenders we've been expecting, like The Descendants and The Artist, but also has a few surprises. Namely, Martin Scorsese's Hugo as emerged as a force to be reckoned with, leading the pack with 11 nods. Brad Pitt's got not one but two movies up for best picture, with Moneyball and The Tree of Life, not to mention a best actor nod for himself. The Help also cleaned up with eight nominations. On a personal note, we're excited to see some of our favorite 2012 comedies getting some recognition, like The Muppets, Horrible Bosses, and, of course, Bridesmaids. The show doesn't air until 2012, but check out the full list of nominees when you read more. Best Picture The Artist The Descendants Drive Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close »

The week is packed as befits the season, with too many things to cover. I missed Wednesday's invitation-only Lacma screening of "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" for Academy voters and critics, which was under strict Scott Rudin embargo. Even the Q & A with Stephen Daldry, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn, Eric Roth and Max Von Sydow was off-record, which seems extreme--don't they want people to know about their movie? I was at my Sneak Previews screening of "War Horse," with DreamWorks co-president of production Holly Bario on hand. The movie played well for the group (not a dry eye in the house) and as bleached as I am, I did not flag during a »

[1] Every year [2] during awards season, The Hollywood Reporter somehow organizes the schedules of basically every single actor, actress, writer and director [3] of the year's best films to sit down and discuss them. This, in itself, is pretty spectacular. What's even better is they release the videos of the full conversations so we can watch. For the 2011 Writers' Roundtable, they've brought together Moneyball's Steve Zaillan and Aaron Sorkin, The Skin I Live In's Pedro Almodovar, J. Edgar's Dustin Lance Black, Rampart's Oren Moverman and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close's Eric Roth to discuss their own, and each others', scripts, all of which have a good shot at multiple award nominations. Check out the video after the jump. Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter [4] for this awesome video. We also just posted the director's roundtable, which you can watch here [5], the actors here [6], actresses here [7] and if you don't »

Awards season is upon us and few movies are being more blatantly marketed to appeal to Oscar voters than Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, an adaptation of author Jonathan Safran Foer’s best-selling novel that was directed by Academy Award-nominee Stephen David Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader). Foer’s literature was scripted into film form by Oscar-winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and stars two big-name thespians who also have little golden man statuettes on their bookshelf – namely, Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock.
Today we have the second trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; like its predecessor, this new theatrical promo is a patchwork of tear-jerking moments and dramatic scenes from the film (or, if you will, “Oscar clips”).
