Agents of Shield, Ep. 2.20, “Scars”: This Means War

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 20: “Scars”

Written by Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc

Directed by Bobby Roth

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America talks about how Shield is about saving people and that’s “how Shield should work.” While the Avengers are waxing nostalgic about their days at Nick Fury’s Shield, remembering the super-cool heli-carrier while forgetting Fury’s secret alien weaponry, present-day Shield is not really all that pretty and shiny. If anything, they are dealing with the exact same problems that Tony Stark is struggling with in Age of Ultron, and Nick Fury struggled with before him in Winter Soldier. Plot-wise, “Scars” only ties in loosely with Age of Ultron, but thematically, both should really be seen to fully appreciate each one.

In “Scars”, the story picks up after Shield shows up with the heli-carrier in Sokovia and saves the day.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 2×03: Making Friends & Influencing People’ Review

Written by Monica Owusu-Breen | Directed by Bobby Roth

Plot:

As Hydra continues to brainwash Shield agents to comply with their cause, Simmons is found to be working undercover within their organisation.

Verdict:

And so we finally get to see what Simmons has been up to for the past few episodes, which we find is working for Hydra. Her getting up and heading for work montage (which had the tune ‘God Help the Girl’ playing alongside it) was well done, with the ending focusing on the Hydra logo in the laboratory. This was meant to make us think that she had switched sides, but I didn’t believe the good hearted Simmon’s would be like that. And the show did not waste any time revealing that truth to us, as just one quarter way through the episode we get a nice dinner/debrief between her and Coulson (with the Shield

Agents of Shield, Ep. 2.03, “Making Friends and Influencing People”: Simmons Makes New Friends Undercover at Hydra

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 3, “Making Friends and Influencing People”

Written by Monica Owusu-Breen

Directed by Bobby Roth

Airs Tuesdays at 9pm Et on ABC

To quote Bill Hader’s beloved SNL character Stefon, “Making Friends and Influencing People” is an episode of Agents of Shield that has everything: Double-agents! Hypnotism! Nazis making The Sound of Music jokes! A male version of Queen Elsa from Frozen (minus the singing) freezing a ship! Underneath all of these borderline silly moments, however, is one of the best episodes of Agents of Shield yet, not just for season two but season one as well.

The three major storylines of the episode are Simmons going undercover in Hydra, the return of Donnie Gill, and Fitz finding out that “the asset” is Ward. There are also some subplots about Skye training with May and Fitz bonding with Mac, but unlike some of the over-packed season one episodes,

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: Ice, Ice Baby

  • Vulture
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: Ice, Ice Baby
A late viewer to last night's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might assume that the series had been canceled and replaced by a quirky sitcom. Who's that girl? It's Agent Jemma Simmons, making her triumphant return to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the very solid "Making Friends and Influencing People." Director Bobby Roth shoots Simmons's formal reintroduction to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in an unmistakable rom-com style (with a major assist from the upbeat pop song "God Help the Girl"). Like Mary Tyler Moore, Simmons's morning routine includes turning the world on with her smile. Unlike Mary Tyler Moore, Simmons occupies a world controlled by a demented ex-Nazi group bent on world domination. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s first season indicated that Simmons had dedicated her life to fighting that group, which is why we're presumably meant to gasp when she walks into an office bearing the Hydra logo.Of course — as pretty much everybody
