Prior to his career as a producer he was the principal outside attorney for Playboy in the 1950's. He successfully fought censorship in a number of locales. In a landmark first amendment case, he represented Lenny Bruce before the Illinois Appellate Court in 1964 winning the comedian an acquittal on obscenity charges.
