Mark Hamill confirms rumour about the original opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens

4 May 2016 2:39 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Back in the summer of 2014, a rumour emerged from Birth.Movies.Death suggesting that the then-titled Star Wars: Episode VII would begin with a shot of Luke Skywalker’s severed hand and lightsaber floating through space before landing on a planet. Of course, as we all know, that opening was absent from Star Wars: The Force Awakens; however, Mark Hamill has now confirmed to The Sun that an early draft of the script did begin with that sequence:

“I can tell you now that in the original opening shot of 7, the first thing that came into frame was a hand with a lightsaber, a severed hand that enters the atmosphere, and then the hand and bone burns away and goes sticking into the surface of Jakku, and this alien hand comes in, don’t know if it was Maz but it was an alien hand who takes the lightsaber way, »

J.J. Abrams says Rey’s parents aren’t in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then backpeddles

16 April 2016 11:19 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It’s the big mystery coming out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens – just who are Rey’s parents? Many fans have their theories on the matter, but one put the burning question direct to J.J. Abrams during a Q&A at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII,” said Abrams, somewhat uncomfortably. “So I can’t possibly, in this moment, tell you who they are. But I will say, all I would say is, it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”

With Abrams seemingly dismissing the prospect of Rey being a Skywalker, then director then clarified his comments to EW, stating that: “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.”

So… who do you think Rey’s parents are? Does J.J. Abrams even know? Or has he left »

J.J. Abrams reveals Mark Hamill’s role in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens table read

5 April 2016 9:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens, you were probably left wondering why Lucasfilm bothered to bring Mark Hamill in for the cast table read when his character Luke Skywalker had no lines in the movie. Well, as you’d expect with a J.J. Abrams movie, it was partly to retain the movie’s secrets, but the director has also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Hamill had another important role to play:

“It was partly trickery,” states Abrams. “We knew, obviously, that he didn’t speak in the film. And because we knew we were going to take pictures, and people knew he was in the movie, we needed to have him there. “It wouldn’t have been right notto have him there. But it also wouldn’t have been right to have him there and not participate.”

Abrams went on to reveal that Hamill agreed to read out the stage directions from the script, »

Watch a Star Wars: The Force Awakens and A New Hope side-by-side comparison video

30 March 2016 1:47 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens did much to repair the damage of the Prequel Trilogy, one of the main criticisms levied towards the J.J. Abrams-directed film is that it is essentially a remake of 1977’s A New Hope.

While that may be a tad harsh, Abrams clearly took the opportunity to pay homage to the original Star Wars movie with his foray to the galaxy far, far away, and Vimeo user Zachary Antell has put together a four-minute video offering a side-by-side comparison between Episode IV and Episode VIII.
