Amanda Root was born in 1963 in Essex, England. She is known for her work on Persuasion (1995), The Iron Lady (2011) and The BFG (1989).

Acted as narrator and host for a documentary on Jane Austen's life which is played continually at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, England.
Was originally sought by Emma Thompson to play the role of Marianne in Sense and Sensibility. Root participated and was at the original script read-through. However, by the time the film was finally being made, she was already attached to appear in another Jane Austen film, Persuasion. The role eventually went to Kate Winslet.
Nominated for the 2009 Tony Award for Best Performance for a Featured Actress in a Play for ""The Norman Conquests".
